05.12.1998 : Steps - Tragedy (1 week # 1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/00/Heartbeattragedy.jpg

"Tragedy" is a song released by Bee Gees, written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb, included on their 1979 album "Spirits Having Flown". The single reached #1 in the UK in February 1979 and repeated the feat the following month on the US Billboard Hot 100.

In 1998, Steps covered "Tragedy", releasing it as a double A-side with "Heartbeat". It debuted at #2 on UK Singles Chart, before climbing to the top spot in its eighth week, and achieving platinum status. A dance step of putting both hands parallel to the sides of the head became the trademark move of the British group. "Tragedy" has sold more copies than all three previous Steps singles combined with 1.18 million copies sold in UK. It spent eighteen weeks in the Top 20.

The video for "Tragedy" sees Faye, Claire, and Lisa getting married, but the boys sabotage all three weddings before they all go to a disco. The group's actual families all took part in the video, with the girls' fathers walking them down the aisle, and record producer Pete Waterman appears as the wedding DJ.

Fifth # 1 single for Steps in row.

12.12.1998 : Faith Hill - This Kiss (1 week # 1)

http://cdn.7static.com/static/img/sleeveart/00/000/640/0000064023_350.jpg

"This Kiss" is a song written by Beth Nielsen Chapman, Robin Lerner and Annie Roboff, and recorded by American country music singer Faith Hill. It was released on March 10, 1998 as the first single from her album "Faith". The song became a crossover single, reaching #1 on U.S. and Canadian country charts, in addition to reaching Top 10 on the US pop and Adult Contemporary charts, as well as Top Ten in Australia and # 13 in United Kingdom.

A video was shot to accompany the song, featuring Hill in a colorful fantasy-like sequence. She was featured swinging on a nectarine, jumping from flower to flower, and riding flying bees and butterflies. In her CMT Video Bio, Faith revealed that clothing she tried on and approved for the video just days prior to the shoot, was already too small because of her pregnancy when she arrived on set. "This Kiss" also became the soundtrack for the 1998 movie "Practical Magic".

Hi Alex, no crossover chart-toppers with my chart this time, though some went top 10 - Corrs, Steps, St Etienne, faith hill, and the biggest Ace Of Base which just missed number 1. A couple of them I don't know, eek!

"From This Moment On" was taken from her third studio album "Come On Over" (1997). The song was written by Twain, while additional production and songwriting was done by Robert John "Mutt" Lange. After finishing the track, both Twain and Lange concluded that the song would work best as a duet.

"From This Moment On" is a country pop track, which received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who deemed it as one of the album's highlights. The song achieved moderate commercial success, reaching the top ten in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom (# 9) and United States. It also charted in France, Netherlands, New Zealand and Sweden.

06.02.1999 : Ace Of Base - Always Have, Always Will (1 week # 1)

http://991.com/NewGallery/Ace-Of-Base-Always-Have-Alway-153011.jpg

"Always Have Always Will" was a third single from album "Flowers" in UK, following "Life Is a Flower" and "Cruel Summer". The song was originally titled "Killer on the Rampage" and contained different lyrics. When the song was pitched as a potential song for the upcoming Flowers/Cruel Summer album, Arista records liked the melody; however, demanded the lyrics be rewritten.

Only # 12 in official UK Singles chart, but it's 7th # 1 for Ace Of Base in this thread.

13.02.1999 : Blondie - Maria (2 weeks # 1)

http://dl8.glitter-graphics.net/pub/957/957968jud54mio74.jpg

Best comeback in all music history. 8th Blondie's # 1 single. Previous # 1 was "Call Me" in 1980, maybe it's a biggest gap between # 1 singles in my charts.

"Maria" is a song by the American band Blondie, taken from their 1999 album "No Exit". This song was Blondie's comeback single, their first since "War Child" in July 1982. In UK Singles Chart, it was the band's sixth no. 1 single, topping the charts exactly 20 years after their first UK number one "Heart of Glass" in the spring of 1979. The song was written by the band's keyboardist Jimmy Destri, who had also penned some of their earlier hits such as "Atomic".

27.02.1999 : Britney Spears - Baby One More Time (2 weeks # 1)

http://cdn.idolator.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/07/britney-spears-baby-one-more-time-album-cover-1999-400x300.jpg

"Baby One More Time" was Spears's debut single and title track from her debut studio album "Baby One More Time" (1999). Written by Max Martin "Baby One More Time" was released in United States on September 30, 1998, by Jive Records. After recording and sending a demo tape with an unused song from Toni Braxton, Spears signed a multi-album deal with Jive. "Baby One More Time" is a teen pop and dance-pop song that refers to a girl who regrets breaking up with her boyfriend. The song received generally favorable reviews from critics, who praised its composition.

"Baby One More Time" attained global success, reaching number one in every country it charted. It also received numerous certifications around the world, and is one of the best-selling singles of all time, with over 10 million copies sold. An accompanying music video, directed by Nigel Dick, portrays Spears as a student from a Catholic high school, who starts to daydream that she is singing and dancing around the school, while watching her love interest from afar. The music video was later referenced in the music video of "If U Seek Amy" (2008), where Spears's fictional daughter is dressed with a similar schoolgirl outfit while wearing pink ribbons in her hair. In 2010, the music video for "Baby One More Time" was voted the third most influential video in the history of pop music.

In United Kingdom single "Baby One More Time" has sold more than 250,000 copies in a mere three days. Spears broke a first-week sales record for a female act at the time when "Baby One More Time" sold a total of 460,000 copies in the United Kingdom. The single went on to sell over 1.5 million units, making it the highest-selling single of the year.

Is it the best debut single of the year ? No. Let's wait May.

20.03.1999 : Steps - Better Best Forgotten (4 weeks # 1)

http://www.ultimate-steps.com/wp-content/gallery/better-best-forgotten/1.jpg

Fifth and final Steps single from their debut album "Step One". "Better Best Forgotten" was released on 8 March 1999 (only a month before the ABBA tribute single "Thank ABBA for the Music") and blocked in UK charts from # 1 by Boyzone song :(. The single also reached # 8 in Ireland. Spending 17 weeks on the British charts, this single became the first single for Steps to fall off the charts and then re-enter. When it shot straight into the top five in March 1999, this song became the group's most successful single of 1999.

The video has a watery-theme, and the group wear blue outfits. Group members Lee and H play with water pistols, and interfere with the girls' singing. During the video shoot, a glass wall collapsed on Faye Tozer, leaving glass splinters in her back.

With "Better Best Forgotten" Steps got 6 consecutive # 1 single and broke Shampoo's record.

Steps were a plastic ABBA.

Steps were ABBA of my generation, as Bucks Fizz were in 80s.

Sadly after a split of Steps we don't have any good and well-known mixed pop group. allSTARS* and Scooch had a very short music career. :(

In 2002 I really thought that allSTARS* would be the next Steps.

24.04.1999 : Ellie Campbell - Sweet Lies (3 weeks # 1)

http://textbase.ru/img/artist/38986709.png

Ellie Campbell is a British singer. She released four singles and an album between 1998 and 2001. Initially winning a GMTV contest to find a new singer, Campbell released her debut single "Sweet Lies" in 1998, the single reached #42 in UK Singles Chart.

Whilst Campbell was enjoying her chart success, Britney Spears came onto the music scene and the media quickly made comparisons between the two. Her debut album "Ellie" was released in 2001, but flopped and did not chart in UK Albums Chart.

Damned Boyzone. Some months ago they blocked Steps from number one in UK charts and now...

22.05.1999 : Geri Halliwell - Look At Me (4 weeks # 1)

http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/ad133/Br0ther66/Clips2/GeriHalliwell-LookAtMe08.jpg

The star was born. My all-time # 1 favourite singer Geri Halliwell left Spice Girls and launched her solo career in 1999.

"Look at Me" was released as the first single from Halliwell's debut solo album "Schizophonic". Since Halliwell had chosen "Look at Me" as the first single from Schizophonic and because she felt as though the song was going to return her to the mainstream market, it was released the same week as Boyzone's "You Needed Me". In early 1999, Boyzone were at the height of their success with five UK number-ones, however, Halliwell was confident that "Look at Me" would reach number-one. Although more transactions were made of the "Look at Me" single, two CD singles of "You Needed Me" were released in order for fans to purchase both and ensure that Boyzone made it to the number-one position

"Look at Me" entered in UK Singles Chart at number two; it was only 700 copies behind Boyzone's "You Needed Me". Halliwell was disappointed with the outcome of the chart performance for "Look at Me" since she had believed that it would reach number one. She had also feared that her career was to end six months following the release of the single. However, Halliwell would earn her first UK number-one single with "Mi Chico Latino". "Look at Me" went on to sell 330,812 copies in United Kingdom alone, being certified Gold by the BPI, and over 1 million copies worldwide.

Who is Geri Halliwell ? Virgin ? Vamp ? Sister ? Bitch ?

The music video for "Look at Me" was directed by Vaughan Arnell and filmed in Prague, Czech Republic. The music video features four versions of Halliwell: a vamp, a bitch, a virgin, and a sister. Most of the music video is black and white, except in one scene in the middle of the video, during the funeral of Ginger Spice, Halliwell was seen with red hair (a wig), blonde highlights and a red thorn crown. In the last part, Halliwell and male dancers are dancing on some stairs and then in front of a fountain. At the end of the video there is a message saying "Geri's back!" with a picture of a nude Geri and ends with a G.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2G7dcs3DXwc/TchPzHHrMeI/AAAAAAAAAcs/xB0becZk4Lk/s1600/tdimm17.jpg

Shania Twain got her fifth # 1 single. It was released in December 1998 as the sixth country single from her ultimate album "Come On Over". It was third to pop and fourth to international markets. The song was written by Robert John "Mutt" Lange and Twain, and was originally released to North American country radio stations in late 1998. It became her third biggest single on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of Twain's biggest hits worldwide.

Internationally, "That Don't Impress Me Much" became Twain's biggest single in the United Kingdom. It debuted, at its peak, on May 22, 1999 at number three, where it remained for three weeks, and remained in the top ten for another seven weeks. "That Don't Impress Me Much" became Twain's third (second consecutive) top ten in United Kingdom and the best selling non-number one single of the year in the country. Elsewhere, the song hit number one in Belgium, Ireland, Norway and New Zealand, where it debuted at number one, and was later certified Platinum.

In all, "That Don't Impress Me Much" hit the top ten in 14 countries : Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States. In Australia "That Don't Impress Me Much" Debuted at #5, reaching #2 on its third week and staying there for 7 weeks as Britney's Spears single 'Baby One More Time" was keeping its top position. The single stayed on the top 100 for 23 weeks and made the eighth highest selling single of 1999.

Amazing period for pure pop music. Sadly, but these songs wouldn't reach # 1 position :

Garbage - You Look So Fine

21st Century Girls - 21st Century Girls

Blondie - Nothing Is Real But The Girl
