February 4, 201312 yr Author 17.01.1976 : Barbara Dickson - Answer Me (2 weeks # 1) http://www.barbaradickson.net/y_answer_me_album.jpg x0fnOPdKLVE Barbara Ruth Dickson is a Scottish singer whose hits include "I Know Him So Well" and "January February". Dickson has placed fifteen albums in the UK Albums Chart from 1977 to date, and had a number of hit singles, including two which reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart. The Scotsman newspaper has described her as the best-selling female singer in terms of the numbers of hit chart singles and albums she has achieved in the UK since 1976. Dickson's singing career started in folk clubs around her native Fife in 1964. Her first commercial recording was in 1968. Her early work included albums with Archie Fisher, the first of which, The Fate O' Charlie, a collection of songs from the Jacobite rebellions, was released in 1969. Her first solo album was Do Right Woman in 1970. She became a well-known face on the British folk circuit of the late 1960s and early 1970s, but changed her career course after meeting Willy Russell. He was at that time a young student running a folk club in Liverpool. He showed Dickson the first draft of what later became the award winning musical, John, Paul, George, Ringo … and Bert, and asked her to perform the music. The combination of fine writing, a superb cast of young unknowns, (including Antony Sher, Bernard Hill and Trevor Eve), and Dickson’s idiosyncratic interpretation of Beatles songs made the show hugely successful. The show’s co-producer, Robert Stigwood, signed Dickson to his record label, RSO Records, where she recorded the album Answer Me, arranged and produced by Junior Campbell, the title track becoming a Top 10 hit in 1976. This led to her guest residency on The Two Ronnies, which brought Dickson’s singing to the attention of more than ten million BBC Television viewers every week. "Deep Purple" was published in 1933 as a piano composition. The following year, Paul Whiteman had it scored for his suave "big band" orchestra that was "making a lady out of jazz" in Whiteman's phrase. "Deep Purple" became so popular in sheet music sales that Mitchell Parish added lyrics in 1938: When the deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls And the stars begin to twinkle in the sky— In the mist of a memory you wander back to me Breathing my name with a sigh... British rock band Deep Purple got their name from Pete De Rose's hit after guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother repeatedly asked if they would be performing the song, her personal favourite. Brother-and-sister team, Donny and Marie Osmond, revived "Deep Purple" in March 1976 and took it into the Top 20, peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 with Marie intoning the balmy lyrics during the break, as April Stevens had done in the Nino Tempo/April Stevens version. As an interesting aside, the song that succeeded the Tempo/Stevens version of "Deep Purple" at number one on the Billboard chart, "I'm Leaving It Up To You" by Dale & Grace, was also a hit over a decade later in a cover version by Donny & Marie (in 1974). # 25 in UK singles chart. February 4, 201312 yr Author 21.02.1976 : Guys and Dolls - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me (2 weeks # 1) http://991.com/newGallery/Guys-N-Dolls-The-Good-Times-491944.jpg ch0cmXFJKJ8 "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" is a 1966 hit recorded by English singer Dusty Springfield which proved to be her career record reaching #1 UK and #4 US: the song subsequently charted in the UK via remakes by Elvis Presley (#9/ 1971), Guys 'n' Dolls (#5/ 1976) and Denise Welch (#23/ 1995) with Presley's version also reaching #11 US in 1970. "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" was also a Top Ten hit in Ireland for Red Hurley (#5/ 1978), in Italy for Wall Street Crash (#6/ 1983), and - as "En koskaan" - in Finland for Kristina Hautala (#6/ 1966). On 9 March 1966 Springfield had an instrumental track of Donaggio's composition recorded at Philips Studio Marble Arch: the session personnel included guitarist Big Jim Sullivan and drummer Bobby Graham. Springfield still lacked an English lyric to record: eventually Springfield's friend Vicki Wickham, the producer of Ready Steady Go!, would write the required English lyric with her own friend Simon Napier-Bell who was the manager of the Yardbirds. Neither Wickham nor Napier-Bell had any discernible experience as songwriters: according to Napier-Bell, he and Wickham were dining out when she mentioned to him that Springfield hoped to get an English lyric for Donaggio's song and the two lightheartedly took up the challenge of writing the lyric themselves: "We went back to [Wickham]'s flat and started working on it. We wanted to go to a trendy disco so we had about an hour to write it. We wrote the chorus and then we wrote the verse in a taxi to wherever we were going." Neither Wickham or Napier-Bell had any understanding of the Italian lyrics of the original song: according to Wickham they attempted to write their own lyric for an anti-love song to be called "I Don't Love You"; when that original idea proved unproductive it was adjusted first to "You Don't Love Me" and then "You Don't Have to Love Me" which was finalized as "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" to fit the song's melody. Napier-Bell was later to title his first book (an autobiographical account of the British music scene of the 1960s) You Don't Haver to Say You Love Me after the song. Chart results for Guys And Dolls version : UK (# 5), Ireland (# 1), Netherlands (# 12), Belgium (#8).

February 5, 201312 yr Author 13.03.1976 : Brotherhood Of Man - Save Your Kisses For Me (3 weeks # 1) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/49/Save_your_kisses_me_me_-_BOM.jpg ykKNC6NjgMc "Save Your Kisses for Me" was originally written by member Lee Sheriden in August 1974. On bringing the song in to the next songwriting session, others thought that the title was clumsy and reworked it into "Oceans of Love". Sheriden was unhappy with the changes and the song was shelved. A year later when it came to coming up with songs for the next album, they discovered that they needed one more song and Sheriden again put forth "Save Your Kisses for Me". This time it was accepted, as he later recalled: "I'd had a year to think about it, I knew exactly what I wanted to do on the arrangement, the glockenspiel on the beginning and the big 12-string acoustic guitar and the strings, and then came the day to record the song...It was about midnight and I sang it and it went well. I could see everyone behind the glass panel getting excited and I thought great, they all really like the song, and as I finished I was waiting for them to press the button so they could speak to me and say 'great, we've got a hit' or whatever, and the person pressing it said: 'Lee, we think Martin should sing this song'. But I didn't mind because Martin came in and sung it to perfection." Soon after, manager Tony Hiller was keen for the group to try for Eurovision, now that the qualifying rounds had changed in the UK. Up till now, a singer was nominated to perform, but for 1976 it was opened up to different singers to enter their own songs. Brotherhood of Man put forward "Save Your Kisses for Me" and it was accepted as one of the 12 finalists. It won A Song for Europe on 25 February 1976, beating second-placed Co-Co by just two points. The song was released as a single and reached number one in the UK Charts two weeks before the Eurovision final, due to be held on 3 April. After winning the contest, the song was a hit in many countries worldwide: # 1 : France, Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Netherlands, Australia # 2 : Germany, Switzerland # 3 : Austria # 4 : South Africa # 6 : Sweden # 9 : New Zealand In the UK, it stayed at No. 1 for six weeks and was certified platinum by the BPI in May 1976, becoming the biggest selling single of the year. In the United States, the song was a moderate pop hit (No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100) but went all the way to No. 1 on the Easy Listening chart. "Save Your Kisses for Me" is still one of the best-selling singles of all time in the UK, with sales of over a million copies. Edited February 6, 201312 yr by AlexRange

Recorded earlier in 1952 by Vera Lynn. It's based on the French song, "Hymne a l'amour", an Edith Piaf song. In 1976, Mary Hopkin returned to recording under her own name and released the single "If You Love Me (Really Love Me)", which reached Number 32 in the UK chart. The B-side, "Tell Me Now," was an original composition by Hopkin. Her next single was "Wrap Me In Your Arms," with the B-side again written by Hopkin ("Just A Dreamer"). These singles came out on Visconti's Good Earth Records label. Several songs recorded for an album at the time have now been released under Hopkin's own label, Mary Hopkin Music. Two members of Steeleye Span (Bob Johnson and Pete Knight) chose Hopkin to play "Princess Lirazel" on their concept album The King of Elfland's Daughter. She also appeared at the Cambridge Folk Festival with Bert Jansch. 1976 also saw the birth of her second child. Before the 1970s ended, Decca released a compilation album of Hopkin's Cambrian recordings, The Welsh World of Mary Hopkin. Final # 1 single for Mary Hopkin. Edited February 6, 201312 yr by AlexRange
February 6, 201312 yr Author 29.05.1976 : Fox - Single Bed (3 weeks # 1) http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m7577lSY5x1rrzjo7o1_500.jpg 9wKdtTYdmXM Fox was a British-based pop band popular in the mid-1970s. Led by American songwriter and record producer Kenny Young, the band was perhaps best known for its charismatic Australian lead singer Susan Traynor, who performed under the name Noosha Fox. The band was founded by Young, who had composed the song "Under the Boardwalk" for The Drifters in 1964. Young had worked off and on with the Australian singer Susan Traynor for a number of years in the United States. As an uncredited member of The Charmettes, produced by Young, Traynor had scored a minor hit single with "Please Don't Kiss Me Again" and she had later appeared on Young's album, Last Stage For Silverworld, where she was listed as 'Amanda'. Both Traynor and Young then relocated to England in 1968, after Young had written Reparata and the Delrons' "Captain of Your Ship", which had been a UK hit. Young then discovered Northern Irish singer Clodagh Rodgers on a television show, who had recently released the single, "Play The Drama till The End". The partnership produced hit singles over a three-year period, beginning with "Come Back and Shake Me". With this, Rodgers became something of a blueprint for the group, as she recorded demos of some of the songs which would eventually surface on the first Fox album in 1975, as well as earlier Young tunes. Meanwhile, Traynor was in a folk group called Wooden Horse, which released two albums before breaking up. After his success with Rogers, Young founded Fox with Irish singer Herbie Armstrong, recruiting Traynor as lead singer. She adopted the stage name 'Noosha', a scrambled version of her own name, and a glamorous image inspired by Marlene Dietrich, wearing elegant dresses to contrast with the scruffy look of the rest of the group. The band's self-titled debut album was released on GTO Records in 1975 to critical acclaim. The lead single, "Only You Can", was a Top 10 hit in the UK Singles Chart, the follow-up "Imagine Me Imagine You" also reached the Top 20 and "He's Got Magic" was a hit in some European countries. Also the track "Love Ship" was played extensively on Radio Caroline, and was subsequently adopted as one of their theme tunes in the 1970s. Shortly after the release of their first album, Fox made a cameo appearance in the film Side by Side. However, Noosha was relegated to backing vocals for half the songs on the late 1975 follow-up album, Tails of Illusion, with the other songs sung by Young. The album enjoyed neither the critical nor the sales success of its predecessor; without Noosha's distinctive voice, casual listeners did not associate the songs with the band that had recorded "Only You Can". Roger Taylor of Queen added backing vocals to the song "Survival". The band returned to the charts in April 1976 when "Single Bed" was a Top 5 UK hit and topped the Australian chart. (Bananarama did their own version of this song in 2009 on their album Viva.) Again, the band failed to capitalise upon its momentum, and the accompanying album Blue Hotel (1977), yielded only one further single, even though Noosha was reinstated as lead singer on all its tracks. February 6, 201312 yr Author 19.06.1976 : Brotherhood Of Man - My Sweet Rosalie (8 weeks # 1) http://www.chartstats.com/images/artwork/4468.jpg 3KaozAKgBQU "My Sweet Rosalie" is a 1976 song by British pop group Brotherhood of Man. It was released as the follow-up single to the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest winner, "Save Your Kisses for Me". The song was written by band members Martin Lee and Lee Sheriden with producer Tony Hiller. Having won the Eurovision Song Contest in April 1976, the group were catapulted to success with the song selling over a million copies in the UK alone. Although they had also just released their second album ("Love and Kisses from Brotherhood of Man), the group decided not to release a follow-up single from the album. Instead, they devised a song very similar to the Eurovision winner called "My Sweet Rosalie". Its similarities were heightened by the fact that it included a twist at the end of the song, as did "Save Your Kisses for Me". Member and co-writer Martin Lee admitted to the similarities in an interview at the time, saying "The people have told us exactly where our bag is and what they want to hear. Easy listening has sold us over a million in this country, which is unbelievable and we moulded the follow-up in respect of that". The single was released in early June 1976 with Pye Records issuing it in a picture sleeve, which was a rarity at the time in the UK (although commonplace in the rest of Europe). The single however failed expectations in the UK by only reaching No.30, although it charted much better in Europe, reaching No.2 in Belgium and No.5 in the Netherlands for example. The song features member Martin Lee on lead vocals and tells of his love for his "sweet Rosalie". The twist at the end of the song is that the object of his affections is a puppy dog. For TV appearances at the time, the group appeared with a live puppy at the end. Member Nicky Stevens had recently got married at the time of promotion and had to delay her honeymoon to perform the song with the group on Top of the Pops. "My Sweet Rosalie" was backed by a non-album track "Sugar Honey Love" on the B-side and was later issued on the group's third album Oh Boy!. The group re-recorded the song many years later as a medley with later single "Oh Boy (The Mood I'm In)" and appeared on their albums Greenhouse and The Seventies Story. In the mid-1960s she became a prominent British teenage model of swinging sixties London with others such as Penelope Tree. Twiggy then embarked on an award-winning acting and singing career, starring in a variety of roles on stage and screen, and recording albums. In 1971, she made her film debut as an extra in Ken Russell's The Devils. The same year, she performed her first leading role in features as Polly Browne in Ken Russell's adaptation of Sandy Wilson's pastiche of 1920s hit musicals The Boy Friend. This marked her initial collaboration with Tommy Tune, and won her two Golden Globe Awards in 1972 (New Star of the Year - Actress and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy). In 1974, she made her West End stage debut in Cinderella, and made a second feature, the thriller W (co-starring with her future husband Michael Witney), and hosted her own British television series, Twiggs (later renamed Twiggy). In 1973, she appeared with David Bowie on the cover of his 7th album, "Pin Ups". In October 1975, she sang at the live performance of Roger Glover's The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast album at the Royal Albert Hall. The concert was filmed and produced by Tony Klinger and released to cinemas in 1976. It was released in August 1976, and is commonly regarded as one of the most successful singles of the 1970s and greatest songs of all time. "Dancing Queen" was written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson and features the shared lead vocal performance of Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. It is considered by many to be ABBA's signature song, as it reached the number 1 position on popular music charts in many countries. Recorded in 1975, it was released on the group's album Arrival the following year. The song was re-released as a single in 1992 to promote the compilation ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits. "Dancing Queen" was a massive hit. It became ABBA's only No. 1 in the United States in April 1977. It also hit No. 1 in at least 13 other countries worldwide: Australia, Belgium, West Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Sweden and Rhodesia. "Dancing Queen" also reached the Top 5 in Austria, Canada, Finland, France and Switzerland. The track peaked at No. 14 in Italy, where ABBA never achieved the same degree of popularity as elsewhere. "Dancing Queen" was also extremely successful in Norway, where it charted for 32 weeks on the Norwegian charts (VG-lista Top 10), making it the 11th best-performing single of all time in that country. The song sold over three million copies. "Dancing Queen" was the last of three consecutive #1s the band had in the UK in 1976, following "Mamma Mia" and "Fernando" earlier in the year. "That's Me" was used as the B-side on this single. A greatest hits compilation by Agnetha released internationally in 1998 was named after this song, one of her favorite ABBA songs. "Dancing Queen" was # 13 in my personal ABBA songs ranking. "That's Me" is my second favourite ABBA song (after "Honey Honey") Edited February 10, 201312 yr by AlexRange

Written by Werner Theunissen and produced by Eddy Hilberts, "Mississippi" was the sole number one single for Pussycat, spending four weeks at number one on the UK singles chart in October 1976. The song was promoted by John Saunders Hughes in the UK through a Liverpool radio station. The lyrics are about the history of music, how rock music became more popular than country music. It was later followed by "Smile" in 1976, and "Hey Joe" in 1978. Other hits were "If You Ever Come to Amsterdam", "Georgie", "Wet Day in September" and "My Broken Souvenirs". Their career in Europe spanned more than a decade and included some seventeen albums. By 1978 Hans Lutjens had replaced Coumans on drums, as the band continued to release albums and tour, travelling as far afield as South Africa. They made regular appearances on the West German TV series, Musikladen, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. During the 1980s the sisters found it increasingly difficult to finance huge tours with so many musicians, and replaced their backing band with taped music, and thus Pussycat shifted their image one last time. They continued to play and record through to 1985 when they finally disbanded. Edited February 7, 201312 yr by AlexRange

In 1970, aged 19, she entered a talent contest, singing the Mary Hopkin hit "Those Were the Days", and finished in second place, winning £1. She then was chosen to sing in a band with front man Bobby Wayne, known as Bobby Wayne & The Dixies. Two years later, she formed her own band called Imagination (not related to the 1980s British dance band of the same name) and performed with them in pubs and clubs all over southern Wales. It was then that she decided to adopt the stage name of "Sherene Davis", taking the names from her niece's forename and favourite aunt's surname. Despite the two name changes, her family and friends still know her as Gaynor. In 1975, she was discovered by Roger Bell who arranged a recording contract for her with RCA Records. Before signing, she was asked to choose a different stage name and settled on Bonnie Tyler. In 1976, Tyler was spotted in "The Townsman Club" in Swansea by the songwriting and producing team of Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe, who became her managers, songwriters and producers. Tyler first began by recording a track entitled "My! My! Honeycomb", which did not receive any chart success, but did gain local airplay in Swansea. The track was later released on the 2002 compilation, "Total Eclipse Anthology" and on a re-release of "The World Starts Tonight" in 2009, along with the rare track, "Baby I Remember You". "Lost in France" was her debut single, released in 1976 on the RCA Records label. It was written by Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe. The song was included in her debut album The World Starts Tonight in 1977. "Lost In France" was her first single to sell a million records. Following the Top 10 success of her 1976 song "Lost in France", Tyler released her first album in 1977 entitled The World Starts Tonight. A further single from the album, "More Than a Lover", made the UK Top 30, and the follow-up single, "Heaven", reached the Top 30 in Germany. In 1977, Tyler was diagnosed with nodules on her vocal cords that were so severe that she needed to undergo surgery to remove them. After the surgery, she was ordered not to speak for six weeks to aid the healing process, but she accidentally screamed out in frustration one day, causing her voice to take on a raspy quality. At first she believed that her singing career was ruined, but to her surprise her next single, "It's a Heartache," made her an international star. Edited February 8, 201312 yr by AlexRange

The band was a pioneer in the early American New Wave and punk scenes of the mid-1970s. Originally from the band's self-titled debut album, Blondie, the song was Blondie's second and final single on the Private Stock label. The song has a feel reminiscent of Phil Spector-produced pop from the early 60s, with prominent piano, female backing vocals, and a time signature of 12/8. In Australia, after the song was played by mistake (instead of "X-Offender") on the nationally broadcast music program Countdown, it was well received by the viewing audience. Chrysalis Records released the song as a single in Australia, with "Man Overboard" as the B-side. When it reached number two on the charts, Australia became the first territory in which Blondie achieved a hit single. "In the Flesh" was featured in the 1982 film The Last American Virgin. February 7, 201312 yr Author 08.01.1977 : Clodagh Rodgers - Save Me (4 weeks # 1) http://991.com/newGallery/Clodagh-Rodgers-Save-Me-314849.jpg hgserm_QYK0 "Save Me" is a song written by Guy Fletcher and Doug Flett and originally recorded in 1977 by the Irish singer Clodagh Rodgers, for her album of the same title, and released as a single. Rodgers's version failed to chart, but a version recorded the following year by the South African group Clout reached the top ten in South Africa and other countries. "Save Me" was covered again in 1983 by the American country music artist Louise Mandrell. It was the second single from her album Close Up, and Mandrell's then-husband, R.C. Bannon, is credited as a co-writer on her version. The song reached #6 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. In 1978, Rodgers hosted UK ITV's St. Patrick's Day variety show for the second time, appearing on the cover of the TVTimes to promote the show. Later that year, Rodgers teamed with Terry Wogan on the ITV game show 3-2-1 in the programme's first Christmas Special Celebrity edition, and the pair became the first contestants (celebrity or otherwise) to end up with the 'Dustbin' as their prize, losing the chance to attain a prize for their nominated charity. She split from her manager/husband not long after their son's birth and opted for motherhood over performing, although she released 2 singles on the Precision label in 1980. One of these tracks was "My Simple Heart," which was placed on a B-side. Edited February 8, 201312 yr by AlexRange
