19.02.1977 : Mary MacGregor - Torn Between Two Lovers (1 week # 1)

http://cs506303.userapi.com/u131602842/video/l_714ec2b1.jpg

"Torn Between Two Lovers" is the title of a pop song written by Peter Yarrow (of the folk music trio Peter, Paul & Mary) and Phillip Jarrell. It was inspired by Boris Pasternak's 1957 novel, Doctor Zhivago, which featured a man in love with two women. Yarrow originally intended the song to be sung by a man. Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio by Mary MacGregor in 1976, "Torn Between Two Lovers" reached #1 on the U.S. pop chart in February 1977 and the easy listening chart in the final week of 1976 and first week of 1977. The song inspired the title of a television movie aired in 1979, starring Lee Remick, George Peppard, and Joseph Bologna, in which the song is played.

"Torn Between Two Lovers" has also been recorded by Johnny Rodriguez for his 1977 album Practice Makes Perfect, Anna-Lena Löfgren for her 1979 album Lev Som Du Lär and Anita Meyer for her 1984 album Face to Face. Connie Francis recorded "Torn Between Two Lovers" for her 1989 album release Where the Hits Are which was recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and contained a number of songs whose original versions were Muscle Shoals recordings.

26.02.1977 : ABBA - Knowing Me, Knowing You (7 weeks # 1)

http://viking1234567.narod.ru/35401.jpg

"Knowing Me, Knowing You" is a hit single recorded by Swedish pop group ABBA. The song was written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson, with the lead vocal sung by Anni-Frid Lyngstad. During recording sessions, it had the working titles of "Ring It In" and "Number 1, Number 1". "Knowing Me, Knowing You" was released on Arrival, and later on the ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits compilation.

"Knowing Me, Knowing You" was recorded in 1976 at the Metronome studio in Stockholm and released in February 1977, becoming one of the group's most successful singles. The B-side was "Happy Hawaii", an arrangement of another ABBA song, "Why Did It Have to Be Me?", but with a different lead vocalist and lyrics. "Knowing Me, Knowing You" was one of the first ABBA songs to deal with the break-up of a relationship, though with an upbeat quality to the music. It predates the divorces of the ABBA members, as well as further break-up songs to come: "The Winner Takes It All", "One of Us" and "When All Is Said And Done". Group member Benny Andersson named "Knowing Me, Knowing You" as one of ABBA's best recordings in a 2004 interview, along with "Dancing Queen", "The Winner Takes It All" and "When I Kissed the Teacher".

"Knowing Me, Knowing You" was another single from the successful "Arrival" album. It hit #1 in West Germany, United Kingdom and Ireland, while reaching the Top 3 in Austria, Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. It was also a Top 10 hit in Australia, France, New Zealand, and Norway. In United States, it became ABBA's sixth Top 20 single, peaking at number 14 on the Hot 100, and also reached #7 on Billboard's AC chart.

In the UK, "Knowing Me, Knowing You" began a second run of 3 consecutive #1 singles for ABBA (followed by "The Name of the Game" and "Take a Chance on Me"), the group having already had 3 consecutive #1's in 1976. It was ABBA's 6th consecutive #1 single in Germany.

# 7 in my ABBA songs ranking and the highest song, which was realised on single in United Kingdom.

26.03.1977 : Lynsey De Paul And Mike Moran - Rock Bottom (4 weeks # 1)

http://ring.cdandlp.com/golfdrouot73/photo_grande/114137750.jpg

"Rock Bottom" was the British entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1977, performed in English by Lynsey de Paul and Mike Moran. It was also written by de Paul and Moran.

The song says that when people are in a bad situation they should work to solve problems and not be pessimistic about tragedies. Apparently it represents the situation at the time; Eurovision 1977 was almost canceled due to budget restrictions. The BBC, who had to host the contest that year, did not give the song its whole-hearted support.

The song was performed ninth on the night. At the close of voting, it had received 121 points, placing second in a field of 18.

It charted in several European countries, topping the charts in Switzerland, #2 in Austria, #4 in Germany, #6 in Sweden, #7 in Ireland and Norway and #10 in France. In the U.K., it reached #19 at a time when punk and disco ruled the airwaves. Nevertheless, on the basis of sales from the record-buying public of Europe, it was the winning entry, outperforming the contest's winner. The duo also recorded a German version of "Rock Bottom" called "Fur Immer".

30.04.1977 : Rags - Promises Promises (3 weeks # 1)

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hEf5UZDflwM/T3eIyezB-YI/AAAAAAAAE-4/VHdtjrD-qVo/s1600/Eurovision%201977%20Logo.jpg

What a song! This lost out to 'Rock Bottom' by Lynsey de Paul and Mike Moran as the 1977 Eurovision Song Contest entry.

Rags was a trio of British pop singers: Jill Shirley, Steve Glen and Nichola Martin. They had taken part in the (non-televised) 1977 edition of "A Song For Europe", but did not have success with their tune "Promises Promises". Eight months later, they ran off with the international Grand Prize at Tokyo's World Popular Song Festival for their tune "Can't Hide My Love". Some point the finger at their gimmicky staging (stripping out of huge mantles made of multi-colored rags to reveal gold lamé disco outfits) for putting them over their competition.

Unsurprisingly, Nichola Martin was responsible for putting together Bucks Fizz some years later (and Jill Shirley was their manager!).

04.06.1977 : Twiggy - A Woman In Love (5 weeks # 1)

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mfdAFASuUPg/TVh8NGbEtsI/AAAAAAAAAgA/AqpY6Z2xhv0/s400/30736_Twiggy.jpg

In November 1976 she made an appearance on The Muppet Show, in which she sang "In My Life", a Beatles song. In 1976, Twiggy signed to Mercury records and released the albums Twiggy and Please Get My Name Right, discs that contained both pop and country tunes. Twiggy sold very well, peaking on the UK charts at No.33, and gave Twiggy a silver disc for good sales. The album contains Twiggy's top-twenty hit single, "Here I Go Again". "Please Get My Name Right" made it to No.35 in 1977. A single "A Woman In Love" failed to chart in 1977.

In 1978, the television distribution arm of American International Pictures, in an effort to gain additional syndication value in the U.S. to the LWT rock music series Supersonic, repackaged the musical performances with Twiggy replacing Mike Mansfield's introductions. The new series was titled Twiggy's Jukebox, and ran in most of the major television markets in the U.S. during the 1978-79 TV season. Coincidentally, Twiggy herself had performed "Here I Go Again" and "Vanilla Ole" on Supersonic in September 1976, and these performances were included in the refurbished programme. After the initial season, Twiggy left the series, and American International Television continued Jukebox with Britt Ekland as host, using standard music videos rather than clips from Supersonic.

09.07.1977 : Brotherhood Of Man - Angelo (4 weeks # 1)

http://bom.eurovisiecollecties.nl/discogra_bestanden/circus.jpg

"Angelo" is a song by British pop group Brotherhood of Man. Released as a single in June 1977, it became the group's second UK number one hit.

Written by Tony Hiller, Lee Sheriden and Martin Lee and produced by Hiller, it was the band's second UK number one single (after their Eurovision winner, Save Your Kisses for Me the previous year), spending a single week at the top in August 1977. The song remained on the UK Chart for 12 weeks - 10 of them in the Top Ten - and was the 9th biggest selling single of the year. It was awarded a gold disc in August 1977 by the BPI. The song also was a number one hit in Ireland and South Africa (for two weeks). It featured on the group's album Images, which was released later in the year.

Despite being one of the biggest selling singles of the decade, the song has often been criticised in its similarity to "Fernando" - an earlier single released by pop group ABBA, who were seen as Brotherhood of Man's main competition in the UK. Member and co-writer Sheriden denies any attempts to 'copy', stating that they "were simply writing in the style of the day". Other male member and co-writer, Lee also denies the allegation, but admits that "they were pretty close".

The song tells of a shepherd in Mexico who falls in love with a rich girl, but he is met with resistance from her family. Both aware that her family would never allow the union, they run away together and commit suicide. According to co-writer Hiller, the lyrics were based on "Romeo and Juliet - the great love story. The idea was to create a modern day Romeo and Juliet romance".

The song is sung by the two female members of the group, Sandra Stevens and Nicky Stevens, although Sandra sings the opening lines alone. "Angelo" was performed by the group at the Silver Jubilee Royal Variety Gala in November 1977 in front of Queen Elizabeth II.

27.08.1977 : Meri Wilson - Telephone Man (2 weeks # 1)

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/acb5a7ca10e92c2228e8bf71331634ae/200580.jpg

Meri Wilson Edgmon known professionally as Meri Wilson was a model, songwriter, and an American popular music singer, best known for singing double entendre novelty songs.

While singing some jingles in the studio in early 1977, she caught the attention of former Bloodrock vocalist Jim Rutledge who introduced her to music producer Owen 'Boomer' Castleman. Wilson began recording for his BNA Records label and recorded a song entitled "Telephone Man," the story of a woman and her amorous adventures with her telephone technician, filled with suggestive lyrics and her breathy squealing voice. The song became a surprise hit single, climbing the UK Singles Chart to #6, spending ten weeks in the listings, as well as making it to #18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. It sold over one million copies in the U.S. alone. In addition, the song would become a favorite on the "Dr. Demento Radio Show." On the strength of the song's hit, she rapidly put together an album of songs after quickly being signed with the GRT Records label and released her first and only album, "First Take." Unfortunately, the album yielded no further hits, and after the novelty's appeal waned, she went back to singing jingles, modelling and song writing. She also continued to write more novelty songs, including "Peter The Meter Reader," "Dick The DJ," "Santa's Coming," and "My Valentine's Funny," but none of the songs matched the success of her first release.

She died in 2002, at the age of 53, after she lost control of her car on Georgia State Route 377 in Americus, Georgia, during an ice storm.

Ansley Records released a self-titled album in 2002, which included all of her known recorded novelty songs.

10.09.1977 : Patsy Gallant - From New York To L.A. (3 weeks)

http://chartarchive.org/artwork/4710-300.jpg

Patsy Gallant is a Canadian pop singer and musical theater actress. Of Acadian ancestry, she has recorded and performed in both English and French.

Gallant's greatest pop success came when she teamed up with producer and manager Ian Robertson for the 1976 album Are You Ready For Love, which featured the disco hit single "From New York to L.A.". The latter takes its melody from Gilles Vigneault's song "Mon Pays" and the English lyrics were written by Gene Williams. Gallant later recorded Mon Pays with its original lyrics by Vigneault.

From New York to L.A. was Gallant's only recording to attract notice outside Canada; it became a hit in many other countries such as UK (#6), Ireland (#5), Australia (#10), Netherlands (#15), Norway (#7), South Africa (#5) and Sweden (#17). Sugar Daddy and the album's title song 'Are You Ready' for Love are also Top 20 Canadian hits that helped Gallant to win Juno Awards for Best Female

Vocalist in 1976 and 1977. Although overlooked by radio in the U.S., From New York to L.A. and Sugar Daddy were played in American discos. Gallant followed up in 1977 with her French album Besoin d'amour, which includes a French rendition of Sugar Daddy. As a result of her sudden disco success, Gallant hosted her own variety show, The Patsy Gallant Show, which was produced and broadcast on CTV in 1978 and 1979. Gallant released the English album Will You Give Me Your Love and the French album Patsy Gallant et Star, both in 1978 on Attic Records, and has a hit with "Stay a While With Me" ; she also released the English album Patsy! which contains the disco hit "O Michel". Gallant then released a bilingual greatest hits package in early 1979.

24.09.1977 : Baccara - Yes Sir, I Can Boogie (2 weeks # 1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/da/Baccara_ICanBoogie_cover.jpg

"Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" is a 1977 hit single by Spanish vocal duo Baccara. Written by Frank Dostal and Rolf Soja, and produced by Soja, this standard disco song was a major hit across Europe and became the duo's sole number one single in the UK, spending a single week at the top in October 1977. It did not chart in United States, despite receiving airplay in several markets.

Baccara were Spanish flamenco dancers Mayte Matee and Maria Mendilo, who were dancing flamenco and singing traditional songs for tourists on the island of Fuerteventura when RCA executive Leon Deane signed them up.

A successful follow-up single ("Sorry, I'm a Lady") and European tour led to a number of album releases, numerous television appearances and the duo's selection to represent Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest 1978. Despite a substantial following in Spain, Germany and Japan, by 1981 the duo's distinctive blend of disco, pop and Spanish folk music was no longer fashionable, and by 1983 Mayte Mateos and María Mendiola were both working on solo projects. Achieving little success as solo artists, the two formed duos of their own: separate incarnations of the original Baccara appeared during the middle of the decade, with Mendiola fronting New Baccara and Mateos keeping the duo's original name. During the 1990s New Baccara was renamed back to Baccara; as a consequence both Mateos and Mendiola now head different duos with the same name. Both principals have subsequently had prolonged but separate legacy careers based on nostalgia and their earlier fame.

Mendiola's Baccara has seen more international recognition, releasing a string of Hi-NRG club hits such as "Fantasy Boy" and "Touch Me" in the late 1980s and the later UK club hit "Wind Beneath My Wings". Mateos' Baccara has released few new recordings, but has remained in demand for television and live appearances in countries such as Spain and Germany where the original Baccara developed a loyal fan base, performing the duo's back-catalogue and modernised versions of traditional Spanish songs.

15.10.1977 : Brotherhood Of Man - Highwayman (2 weeks # 1)

http://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/f4a4abdfae78f40738c72ac34c570a1d/942892.jpg

Very good, but unsuccessful single from Brotherhood Of Man. (After "Angelo" and before "Figaro")

The group were invited to appear at the 1977 Royal Variety Performance, where they elected to sing "Angelo", rather than their then current single "Highwayman". Deprived of this vital promotion, the single failed to enter the chart (although was 'bubbling under' the top 50 at the time). It did however become a top 20 hit in Netherlands and Belgium. An accompanying album Images, similarly failed in the UK charts.

22.10.1977 : Stella Parton - The Danger Of A Stranger (In The Dark) (4 weeks # 1)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/252/27364633.jpg

Stella Parton is an American country singer and songwriter. She is a younger sister of entertainer Dolly Parton, and musician and businessman Randy Parton. Embarking on a career in music, as her older sister had done, Parton is best known for a series of country singles that charted during the mid- to late-1970s, her biggest hit being 1975's "I Want to Hold You In My Dreams Tonight".

In 1967, Parton released her first album, In The Garden (a gospel project with her sisters, Willadeene and Cassie and mother, Avie Lee). Shortly thereafter, she moved to Washington, DC and began performing country music locally at the club Hillbilly Heaven. Later moving to Nashville, she started her own record label, Soul, Country And Blues, in 1975 and released her debut solo album, I Want to Hold You in My Dreams Tonight. Its title track was a substantial national hit, climbing into the country Top Ten. The success of "I want to Hold you in my Dreams Tonight" landed her a major-label deal with Elektra in 1976. Her 1977 duet with Carmol Taylor, "Neon Woman," was somewhat successful, and she scored three Top 20 hits over 1977-1978 with "The Danger of a Stranger," "Four Little Letters," and "Standard Lie Number One"; she had an additional top-forty hit with her sister Dolly's composition "Steady as the Rain" in 1979. She recorded a total of three albums for Elektra through 1979. In 1984, Dolly starred in the movie Rhinestone, and Stella performed a song with Kin Vassy for the soundtrack.

Though her chart success tapered off, after she left Elektra in 1980, Stella continued to record, releasing albums for several independent labels including Accord/Townhouse and Airborne; she is currently currently with Raptor Records. To date, she has released 22 albums and has had 28 chart singles.

26.11.1977 : ABBA - Name Of The Game (3 weeks # 1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/32/ABBA_-_The_Name_of_the_Game.jpg

"The Name of the Game" is a 1977 song by Swedish pop group ABBA, and was released as the first single from the group's fifth studio album, The Album. It became a UK number one, topping the charts for four weeks in November 1977.

The Name of the Game" was not as successful as ABBA's previous singles since 1975. It was more of a Top 10 success, only topping the British charts. It was the second of three consecutive UK No. 1 singles after "Knowing Me, Knowing You", and before "Take a Chance on Me".

It did reach the Top 5 in Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa and Sweden, while reaching the Top 10 in Australia, West Germany, and Switzerland. On the Hot 100, where ABBA had not been embraced as strongly as in Europe, "The Name of the Game" bowed at No. 82 on 24 December 1977 and peaked at No. 12 on 11–18 March 1978.

An edited version of "The Name of the Game", which omitted the entire second verse of the song, reducing the length of the track from its original 4:51 to 3:58, was released on a promotional single in the USA. The U.S. radio edit of "The Name of the Game" then – apparently by mistake – found its way onto the 1982 Polar Music compilation The Singles: The First Ten Years, and then onto a number of hits packages issued on both vinyl & CD in the 1980s & early 1990s. It also appears on the original 1992 version of the group's ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits album. Not until the 1999 remastered edition of ABBA Gold did the song appear in its entirety on that compilation.

17.12.1977 : Noosha Fox - Georgina Bailey (1 week # 1)

http://www.mortlock.info/thpremot/Noosha%20Fox%20-%20Georgina%20Bailey.jpg

Noosha Fox left the band after "Blue Hotel". Armstrong and Young continued to work together in the band Yellow Dog, whilst Armstrong went on to work with Van Morrison, and Solley later joined Whitesnake. Noosha launched a solo career, and her first single, "Georgina Bailey", written and produced by Young, briefly entered the Top 40 in the UK (reaching number 31) in 1977. However, its title and subject matter (about a girl whose uncle turns out to be gay) were reminiscent of Rod Stewart's then-current single "The Killing of Georgie", and the single's relatively weak chart placement meant that her planned solo album, already partly recorded, was shelved.

In 1979, Noosha Fox tried again to start her solo career with a single, "The Heat Is On", on Chrysalis Records. A cover version by ABBA's Agnetha Faltskog was a big European hit four years later. Noosha recorded several singles in the early 1980s for the Earlobe label but none were successful, and she evidently retired from the music industry, although she did not return to Australia.

24.12.1977 : Debby Boone - You Light Up My Life (4 weeks # 1)

"You Light Up My Life" is a ballad written by Joe Brooks, and originally recorded by Kasey Cisyk for the soundtrack to the film of the same name.

Later, Debby Boone, Pat Boone's daughter, recorded the single, which became an enormous success, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a (then) record-setting ten consecutive weeks. It became the most successful single of the 1970s in the United States, and set a new Hot 100 record for longest reign at No. 1. (Elvis Presley's double-sided "Don't Be Cruel/Hound Dog", then recognized as the longest-running No. 1 of the rock era, spent eleven weeks atop the Billboard Best Sellers chart in 1956, before the debut of the Hot 100.) The record was matched in 1982 by Olivia Newton-John's "Physical", but never surpassed until a 1991 change in chart methodology allowed songs to achieve longer reigns at No.1 ("End of the Road" by Boyz II Men set the new record, thirteen weeks). The single, which was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), also hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and reached #4 on the Country chart. The single peaked at #48 in the UK Singles Chart.

Cisyk's original soundtrack recording was released as a single to bolster sales of the soundtrack, after Boone included her version on her first solo album also entitled You Light Up My Life. Boone's success resulted in Grammy nominations for Best Pop Vocal Performance Female and Record of the Year and won her the 1977 Grammy for Best New Artist and the 1977 American Music Award for Favorite Pop Single. The song earned Brooks the 1977 Song of the Year Grammy (tied with "Love Theme from "A Star Is Born" (Evergreen)") as well as the Best Original Song awards at the 1977 Golden Globe and Academy Awards.

The song ranks #7 on Billboard's All Time Top 100.
