Jessie has been the target of many hate comments during this and LaserLight, many people calling her a sellout and making generic songs just to please the Americans - but I really loved this, one of the catchiest songs of the year and, like Rita a few places earlier in the countdown, makes a Katy Perry song better than she can herself. Clearly the Dr Luke/Max Martin sound suits her more than the David Guetta production.

David has two sides to him, the generic side and the inspired side - thankfully this song was inspired, the video is fabulous too! Sia also proves that she is an amazing vocalist and she is needed on more dance tracks - unfortunately, Sia having an indie background means that she is unlikely to give us another collab with a hot dance producer or rapper - but I never thought Sietta would happen again after Titanium so for that I am grateful.

The main reason why I like it is because of the hook - whistling doesn't work in every song but in this one it fits in very nicely. The sexual meaning of the song (Flo wants a BJ and I don't mean Buzzjack) also gets to my immature teenager side (I am 15 years old what do you expect). It's not Flo's best ever song (Low and Right Round would've been top 5 in my EOY charts if I did them back then) but it certainly is very good and I applaud Flo Rida for taking a different direction in his music, even if I Cry would bring him back to his usual dance beat.

I was expecting it to actually do things in the chart but clearly the massive wait inbetween albums didn't help her career. Singing over a hip-hop beat that later becomes a jungle beat... I've ran out of things to comment on and not make every commentary sound the same - so listen to Big Hoops and let the song speak for itself :D "I thought this song was over... no.... it ain't over yet!" The vocals are nice but don't add much to the song - these days I listen to the instrumental as much as I do the vocal mix. After the disappointment that was "Save the World" - this tune brought the Mafia back with a bang - scoring their first #1 hit on my charts. As you can see above they would score 2 more, both are still to come in the chart.

The song really is a grower. I thought it was boring at first but soon I started to chart it and before long it wouldn't escape from my head and it spent a quarter of the year in the UK Top 10. For a while this was my YTD #1 but the final quarter likes to bring up lots of competition. Anyways this is still an amazing song and it is the highest ~ indie ~ song in my charts. The rest of my chart is full of dance records, with only one song in my top 10 a non-dance song (I'm sure you could still dance to it, however)

I've always thought her songs are nice enough but never really got into them. This changed everything when she got Calvin Harris to remix album track Spectrum - and it got Calvin and Florence their first and (to date) only official #1 on my chart! Coincidentally this went to #1 a week after "Call My Name" - which has the similar title and Calvin on production - however he is not officially credited on CMN (and some would argue he is not officially credited on Spectrum, too) Calvin's reworking made the song a whole lot better (I have heard the original) and he fully deserves a place in this top 10. It is the 2nd year in a row that Calvin has been in this top 10, having made #6 with 2011's "Bounce" featuring Kelis. Unless Calvin releases a song not currently available on his album, it is likely that he won't be in my top 10 songs of 2013. Hopefully he surprises us with another brilliant remix like this one here.

It is the only song in the top 10 that did not become a UK Top 40 hit - as you may have guessed my tastes are very mainstream! The song is very addictive, that lovely house beat with the sample "oh baby, be, be, be, be" managed to get 5 weeks at #1 in the final quarter - not an easy thing to achieve but this song deserved all its weeks there! This type of house isn't normally the thing that would get big on my chart - I like the big room progressive house sound more, well maybe the fact that this doesn't sound like anything else on the chart helps in its appeal. I would love to hear another tune from Julio next year - but it will be very hard to top this tune.

Last year "Levels" finished at #8 but would be much higher now if I did a retrospective chart for 2011. Let's be honest, Avicii was NEVER going to top "Levels". But he did do a very good job at following it up, with the lovely "Silhouettes" featuring uncredited vocals from Salem Al Fakir. "Silhouettes" manages to be more chilled than the hard hitting "Levels" but still has that magic that is common in Avicii productions. A very nice dancefloor tune that topped my chart for 2 weeks in April/May but kept in my heart during the summer. We should expect more from Avicii this year, his new song featuring Nicky Romero "I Could Be The One" is set to hit my chart next week. Edited January 4, 201312 yr by 2013 Thermometer

Nicki has been in the EOY Top 10 before, in 2010 with the help of will.i.am. This year she returned back better than ever with the RedOne production "Starships". When I have learnt all of the rap just by listening to the song that's when you know I really love it! The chorus is very good too, but this is all just a buildup for the best part of the song - the drop in which RedOne delivers a hard beat in a different pitch to the rest of the song but somehow manages to fit in with the song (the old radio 1 edit that cut it out sounded very weird!) Nicki's deluxe version of current album "Roman Reloaded" was just urban songs, but hopefully this doesn't point to Nicki going back to her urban roots - as her pop songs are a lot lot better. Pop Nicki to return in 2013 please :magic: Edited January 4, 201312 yr by 2013 Thermometer

It was held off for 1 week by "Greyhound" (still to come) and "Silhouettes" for 2 weeks. This teen pop song was an instant favourite of the BJSC contest it was entered in, and went top 20 based on that alone. However when it became a worldwide smash it re-entered and I loved it properly. It is just a great cheesy pop song, with loads of parodies and memes based on the chorus made on the internet. I don't see how it's possible to hate this song (my brother would have the complete opposite arguement) and even with overplay it's still amazing. One of the defining hits of 2012 and it's easy to see why. Edited January 4, 201312 yr by 2013 Thermometer

John Martin's vocals work very well on the song, with inspired lyrics - not typical for a dance song! And of course the Mafia impress with their beats, the drop gets everyone on their feet with hands in the air! However if John's vocals are enough proof that it's not just another generic dance song, we get further inspiration from the second buildup - that lovely synth in the background and then the use of an acoustic guitar, all this to get ready for when the beat drops and we can all go crazy again! The extended mix of this is a lot better than the radio edit, if you haven't already I would recommend listening to the 7 minute version of this song. The Mafia will be coming back later in this top 5 with "Greyhound".

I fell in love with this song all over again with the UK release, and it was amazing to see it become a #1 hit and sell over 900k. It was also a massive hit in the US and worldwide. As I said in Sietta's last entry it is Sia's vocals that really make this song for me but it is massively helped by the production skills of Guetta! After the genericness that was 'Little Bad Girl' and 'Where Them Girls At' I felt as if Guetta had sold out as I couldn't get into those songs - but those are amongst the weakest on his brilliant album and David proves here that he can make an inspired song with an unknown name sell well! If only "Just One Last Time" could reach the top 40  Anyway it feels as if he's been in this era for ages so hopefully in 2013 he starts moving on to the next album.

The song is an electro house anthem that Ministry of Sound put on every compilation during the Summer - it finally got radio support in July and went top 10 in the UK the next month. I had heard of Porter before, through Knife Party's remix of his song "Unison", but this breakthrough hit is when I started to take notice of him - hopefully he brings out something good this year! His 2013 is off to a good start, with his Mat Zo collab "Easy" at #1 in Beatport and set to chart with me soon.
