Dixons to dump analogue radios

Source; Music week

Dixons is to discontinue the sale of analogue radios, following substantial growth in the sales of digital radios.

Dixons group managing director Nick Wilkinson says that the move reflects the changing radio environment, in which digital radios are outselling analogue radio by 30:1 at Dixons.co.uk, driven by improvements to the range, better availability of stock, new portable models and investment in new transmitters.

“The growth in demand for digital radios is further evidence that we’re living in the digital age,†he says. “The snap, crackle and pop of the traditional wireless is rapidly being replaced with the crystal-clear sound of digital audio broadcasting.â€

The Digital Radio Development Bureau welcomed the move. Chief executive Ian Dickens says, “This announcement follows Ofcom’s report on the 2005 comms market that highlights the fact that, in the portable radio sector, DAB accounted for 54% of sales in 2005, up from 45% in 2004.

“With DAB digital radios outselling analogue in certain sectors, it makes sense for retailers to reconsider the range of products they offer. The DRDB welcomes Dixon’s decision and looks forward to other retailers following their lead.â€

Other items on Dixons’ “endangered†list include the personal CD player and the boom box, reflecting the growing popularity of MP3 players.

However, Dixons Tax Free airport stores and shops in the Republic Of Ireland will continue to stock analogue radios.
