Before we kick start this countdown of my top 40 songs of the year (according to my personal charts) here's a look at what was big last year. Safe to say there was only one Queen, but this year is much more varied :drama:

40. Lana Del Rey - National Anthem

The first of only two entries from Lana, in a year that she has come to dominate with the glorious Born To Die album. It took me a while to 'get' her, but not it has finally clicked, she's here to stay. Interestingly her number one single Video Games narrowly misses out on the countdown (#44)

39. Cover Drive - Twilight

The inescapable song of early 2012, i went through phases of loving and hating Twilight, but it managed to still sneak a week at the top of my personal chart in February before swiftly falling down. I wonder where Cover Drive are now? Fear not, they have another song coming up here!

38. Girls Aloud - Something New

Never thought i'd have a Girls Aloud song charting this well in 2012! One of only two songs from the girls that i actually love (the other is OBVZ Call The Shots :wub:). Generic as hell, but who cares when the song packs such a mean punch? Still loving it, and still charting in the top 10, i may update the countdown on the 1st January to accomodate for songs still charting this month!

37. Cheryl - Call My Name

A song that has since been fairly forgotten, Cheryl was denied from the top spot by Loreen's Euphoria, and it didn't last long when it eventually dropped out of the top 5.

Definitely a WUT kind of moment, but one play of this infectious, fun summery tune on a drunken night out, was enough to propel Gyptian into the top 5. It hanged around for a while too, and i've grown to really love the track. Nicki's rap is incredible!

35. Lana Del Rey - Blue Jeans

The song that really got me paying attention to Lana Del Rey, and confirmed my position as official STAN, was this glorious, majestic song, aided with a beautiful video and enchanting lyrics. Not my favourite Lana song, but it managed to chart the best and earn its rightful place in this countdown.

34. Fazer - Killer

A track that has aged somewhat now from N-Dubz' third wheel. It started as a fun, explosive smash, but has now become a forgotten dud in the midst of the rest of the chart. Tulisa is still to come here, but i hope next year sees all three members combined together in a much welcomed return of N-Dubz

33. Lady Gaga - Marry The Night

The final number one single of 2011, Marry The Night has suffered from charting between two years, but has still managed to enter here. Helped by an incredible performance from Gaga at the Born This Way Ball, this serves as her only entry in 2012.

32. Marina and the Diamonds - Lies

Despite it's fairly average position in this countdown, Lies is still perhaps one of my favourite songs of the year, and deserved to do so much more in my personal chart. Had it have got a single release (STILL waiting Marina :angry:), this could have easily rocketed into the top 10 of the year.

Meh. I haven't really been too impressed either :lol:. What was i thinking with some of these? :blink:

 

31. Scissor Sisters - Only The Horses

I don't even remember ever playing or loving this song, but apparently i did for a few months :drama: How it has managed to appear above the majestic Lies when i haven't played it for around 4 months baffles me, but there you go. And it is a pretty horse (or is it a zebra?)

30. Tyler James - Single Tear

After giving up on The Voice long before it finished, one gem stuck out and found his way into my personal chart twice. Tyler James' "Higher Love" managed to get to #49 on my EOY countdown, but his next official single (tear) shoots into the top 30 of the year. A brilliant voice, mature sound and pulsating lyrics, Tyler is definitely one to watch for the future (unless he obviously fades into oblivion as i write this)...

 

29. Lawson - Taking Over Me

Coming out of nowhere, to have quite a successful year here, this was the insanely catchy and summery tune with that annoyingly infectious "ooh-ooh" hook. Although i now much prefer Standing in the Dark, it was this that charted most successfully in my charts, and so earns its rightful place in the top 30.

28. Jessie J - Laserlight (feat. David Guetta)

I have a love/hate relationship with Jessie J. I used to love her, and now i can't really stand any of her music. The reason Laserlight charted so well, was because it peaked during my final days at Uni, and as radio hammered it to death at the time, it became the song that reminded me of the final night out with my mates. I guess this is the one still bearable song from J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-Jessie-J for me.

27. Justin Bieber - As Long As You Love Me

In my best Kelly Rowland impersonation "WHO KNEW JB WOULD BE HERE!?!?" Not his biggest fan, but I can't deny how much i loved this song a few months ago. A much more mature sound from the Biebs secured a fairly healthy run and placing here. One of only two songs from him (Beauty and a Beat) to ever chart...

26. Conor Maynard - Turn Around (feat. Ne-Yo)

After his first two singles limped into the charts, it took this Monster hit to thrash Conor into the limelight and manage to even top the charts for a week. Having recently listened to his album (which is strong), Conor could be a continued hit here well into next year, especially as i'm loving his new single right now, just as Turn Around looks set to leave the chart.

25. Drake - Take Care (feat. Rihanna)

Drake's last big hit on my chart ('Over') has finally been overtaken here, with the help of Rihanna and a gorgeous video. It was always destined to be huge when it hung around for ages in the official chart before it was officially released, and it managed to peak at #2 here being blocked off the #1 by Tulisa...

24. Foster The People - Call It What You Want

The first #1 single of 2012. Foster The People continued their reign from 2011 with this huge hit early on in the year which finally managed to topple Gaga from the top, to secure a respectable placing here. A brilliant band, which i very much look forward to hearing more from in the near future!

23. Nicki Minaj - Roman Holiday

The track that kick starts the HOT MESS that is Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, is this manic gem of madness and debauchery. I still haven't made sense of it, despite loving it for a while, and hailing it as the greatest track on the album (yes really)! Nicki still has four more tracks to come in the countdown, but it's this that stands out above the rest, and offers the most repeated listens now.
