December 31, 201212 yr Author 50 Chart run: (5-5-3-7-5-5-11-17-23-30-43-46-58-66-74) UK peak: N/A (#8 in Sweden) From the album: Unchained 'I'm not that fragile, I'm not gonna break, love's so overrated' Another Eurovision connection now, although this wasn't an actual entry. It was in the running to represent Sweden, as it was entered into Melodifestivalen 2012, which we all know was won by Euphoria by Loreen (the eventual Eurovision winner of 2012). This emotional piano ballad really reminds me of something Breakaway era Kelly Clarkson might have recorded, which is probably a huge factor of why I like it so much  49 Chart run: (2-4-9-13-20-27-30-32-34-40-44-50-54-60-66-70-74) UK peak: #1 From the album: A Million Lights 'How do you think I feel when you call my name?' Although known as not the best singer, Cheryl never fails to impress me when it comes to making great pop. As part of Girls Aloud, she has had a hand in pop classics such as Biology and Sound Of The Underground, and her own solo career has yielded the unmistakable million seller Fight For This Love. And this, while generic, is a brilliant dance-pop track which is made all the more magical in the instrumental having been produced by Calvin Harris. 48 Chart run: (5-11-18-22-21-34-37-43-23-3-2-5-12-16-20-25-29-37-46-59) UK peak: DNC (#6 in Spain) From the album: Una mujer como yo - Versión Eurovisión 'Si no supe amarte amor, no era mío el corazón' More Eurovision now, with Spain's epiballad entry Quedate Conmigo (Stay With Me). It came top 10 after a brilliantly emotional perfromance from Pastora, and it stayed high in my charts for a while and peaked after the show. Always one for the vox, this appealed to me and became one of my top highlights of this year's Eurovision. 47 Chart run: (8-17-29-22-34-40-50-61-70-71) UK peak: #4 From the album: The Lateness Of The Hour 'You know I'm not one to break promises, I don't wanna hurt you but I need to breathe' A big trans-atlantic hit now, the Internet Explorer advert staple! This dubsteppy soulful track was floating around for a while but the advert made it take off in a big way. A contrast to the mostly female generic pop in this chart, unconventional popstar Alex's gruff soulful voice makes this track great. 46 Chart run: (58-2-4-7-9-11-13-17-20-24-26-42-44-60-72) UK peak: N/A (#5 in Italy) From the album: L'amore è feminina 'Per sempre non importerebbe niente se la parole tue' More Italian balladry now, from Italian Amy Winehouse-a-like Nina Zilli. Nina was the artist for Italy's 2012 Eurovision entry, which was meant to be this song (although it was foolishly later changed to L'amore è feminina, although still a good song). Her smooth voice carries this great ballad, and my basic grasp of Italian makes it fun to try and understand the lyrics  45 Rita Ora - How We Do (Party) Chart run: (60-13-17-28-39-47-xx-3-4-5-10-14-3-7-14-21-25-27-33-39-43-56-62-71) UK peak: #1 From the album: ORA 'I get that drunk sex feeling yeah when I'm with you' Rita Whora as I now call her might be overrated and unoriginal, but even as not a big fan she does have some good songs. This being her 2nd best (behind album track Radioactive), although it's one of the most generic songs in this whole countdown. Basically mashing together Domino, Last Friday Night and various other derivations of those songs, Rita nonetheless successfully makes a catchy as f*** song which hit #1 in the UK and gave her a sizeable hit in my chart (of course the latter is more important). 44 Chart run: (24-16-24-30-36-30-35-23-20-10-7-2-3-12-18-21-22-30-33-37-48-53-57-65) UK peak: #3 From the album: StooShe 'Daddy I'm falling for a monster, somehow he's scaring me to death' Kicking off a trio of great girlband tracks in this countdown, new girls on the block StooShe had a surprise hit in the summer with Black Heart. Spending multiple weeks in the top 5 and peaking at #3, this radio staple appealed to a wide audience with it's unique Motown fused with modern sound. Sadly the girls failed to live up to this, and are looking like being dropped after the career ending cover of TLC's Waterfalls flopped. 43 Chart run: (68-69-51-58-61-66-20-10-7-13-16-17-20-25-32-36-61-66-71) UK peak: N/A (#1 in Korea) From the album: Electric Shock EP 'jeon jeon jeonryudeuri momeul tago heulleo danyeo' A return to K-Pop now, after a while away from that subject on this chart! This futurisitc electropop track is easily f(x)'s best, and was a successful comeback for them, peaking at #1 in the Gaon chart in their native Korea. It was also my entry to BJSC , ending my run of DNQs and coming in the final. 42 Chart run: (7-3-5-11-22-25-26-32-22-23)*still charting UK peak: #2 From the album: Ten 'All I want is something new, something I can hold onto' Finishing a trio of girlband greatness, Girls Aloud's comeback single is a wonderful typically Xenomania pop track. It might be disappointing compared to their previous hits like Biology, The Loving Kind etc. but it's a fabulous pop track. You can't deny THAT chorus and I even love the talk-sung verses. 41 Chart run:(6-5-9-18-20-26-35-36-39-45-51-60-67-70) UK peak: N/A From the album: The Key Is Key 'I'm the bearded lady at the circus freakish as ccan be' BJSC again, with Eledan's BJSC XLIV winner Ronya just missing out on the top 40. Her uniquely delivered Hypervenilating was an obvious winner from the start, with it's hyperventilating sounding at times vocals fitting the song title! This was a great winner, and a great discovery! I had seen the thread on Buzzjack prior to the contest, but it probably would've gone unnoticed by me had it not been entered. ----------- Some stats for the top 40: - Only 6 of them are by male acts  - 16 of them are by British acts - There are 10 UK number 1s - There are two foreign language songs - one Korean and one Swedish (both probably quite obvious) - 8 of the songs didn't chart at all in the UK (or weren't released) And have another arse to keep you going for the long slog of the top 40: http://i.imgur.com/29mHU.jpg Edited December 31, 201212 yr by Liаm
December 31, 201212 yr Blargh. How did i mess Do You Think of Me and Let it Go? Two of my favourite songs of the year! Olly's arse >>>>>>>>> Nicki's arse.
December 31, 201212 yr Author I love you more and more every post <3 Olly's arse >>>>> any arse tbh. ---- 40 Taylor Swift - Ronan Chart run: (1-3-6-9-13-23-34-49-60-66) UK peak: N/A (#16 in US) From the album: single only 'But what if the miracle was even getting one moment with you?' Kicking off the top 40 on an emotional note, is Taylor Swift with the first of her 3 entries here. Charity single Ronan was written for 4 year old Ronan Campbell who tragically died of a rare bone marrow cancer. This beautiful ballad really touched a nerve with me, and it honestly made me cry the first time I heard it :( It grew old after a month or two, with Red taking over, but this is nonetheless a brilliant song for an emotional cause. 39 Chart run: (3-6-9-11-15-17-22-23-28-30-33-38-29-30-40-44-52-60-65-66-69) UK peak: #11 From the album: Electra Heart 'Get what I want 'cause I ask for it, not because I'm really that deserving of it' Coming from my #2 EOY album Electra Heart, Primadonna '''kicked off''''' the era, because of course the mega flop Radioactive (#26 oh god) never happened. As a typical generic electropop track, this was a slight difference to Marina's quirky tracks such as I Am Not A Robot and Hollywood, but it was her biggest hit to date. Still though, it frustratingly peaked at #11, even spending more than a week there! In the week of the album's release it was something like 200 copies off #10 :( 38 Chart run: (58-65-xx-9-7-5-8-9-11-14-16-22-35-40-49-56-61-71-73) UK peak: #7 From the album: Fall To Grace 'Repeat the memories you made together whose face do you see?' After a slowly successful first era, Paloma returned with expectations on her. And she delivered with this slow burner, which became her biggest hit so far. It took a while to grow on me, but it's classic Paloma with big vocals and drama throughout. 37 Chart run: (56-30-37-44-58-64-xx-8-10-9-11-12-15-20-24-28-33-35-39-45-48-52-57-66-72) UK peak: #194 From the album: Unbroken 'Now here we are, so close yet so far, how did I pass the test?' As one of my very favourite singers, Demi Lovato's Unbroken impressed me from the first listen, though this was not one track that hit me at first, or even for the first couple of months. But as a single, it slowly grew and eventually peaked at #8 for me and has become her best selling hit in the US I believe. Carrying on the poppier themes on Unbroken, Give Your Heart A Break is a pure pop track which delivers an always welcome lovely use of strings in the instrumental. 36 Chart run: (1-2-6-10-14-18-29-45-56-xx-1-2-4-5-7-9-13-15-17-22-30-33-39-43-46-50-53-60-74) UK peak: #3 From the album: Mylo Xyloto 'Once upon a time, we burned bright, now all we ever seem to do is fight' Arguably the biggest band in the world teamed up with arguably the biggest pop female in the world for a song that combined Rihanna's pop/R&B and Coldplay's alternative/rock. The mix of genres produced a very interesting result, one that saw considerable commercial success. Perhaps based on the names, but this song deserved it.
December 31, 201212 yr Author Reggie - Well you would say that  Haus - It wasn't shade :o I love Radioactive, it was sarcasm towards the way they brushed it aside :P And ikr, Nicki's arse could never. --- 35 Ida - I Can Be Chart run: (68-5-6-9-10-12-13-15-19-22-29-30-38-43-49-55-63-66-70) UK peak: N/A (#1 in Denmark) From the album: single only 'I could really use a place to go where no-one looks or stares, getting tired of always talking about the things you wanna say' Batidas' Ida failed to impress the BJSC masses with her quirky winners' single I Can Be, released following her victory on Denmark's version of X-Factor. A unique, wonderful track, I just wish that our X-Factor had great original songs like this :( 34 Chart run: (11-11-3-4-11-8)*still charting UK peak: #1 From the album: English Rain 'Dreams are like angels, they keep bad at bay, love is the light scaring darkness away' The token Christmas advert song, rising singer-songwriter (local lass from Bath woop!) Gabrielle Aplin covered Frankie Goes To Hollywood for 2012's John Lewis advert campaign. I will admit I was a bit disappointed when I heard that it wasn't a Jennifer Rush cover, but still this beautiful cover is carried by Gabrielle's lovely unique voice. And hopefully it gives her a much deserved boost into commercial success. 33 Chart run: (1-3-4-5-7-9-7-11-15-19-28-23-28-38-41-48-60-65) UK peak: N/A (#16 in Finland) From the album: Outta My Head 'I try to replace you, I try to erase you but can't get you outta my head, my heart's torn to pieces and I'm such a mess' 3rd BJSC entry in a row! This time a successful one, and one marred with controversy! It was hotly contested (including by myself), eventually nabbed by Bignia-Zaragovina (Jahq), but then veto'd. However, the following month it was picked up by Land Of Jack (I forget the poster behind the country haha), which riled me and some others a bit :P It's a brilliant electro-pop track though, I can see why it caused so much fuss! 32 Chart run: (3-9-13-24-34-45-56-70-xx-3-4-6-8-10-17-23-33-45-50-55-70) UK peak: #4 From the album: Talk That Talk From her 6th album (obviously Rihanna likes to take her time so definitely hasn't moved onto the 7th and got a platinum selling single from it already or anything), Where Have You Been was the obvious hit, although initially it was skipped for baffling single choice You Da One. Eventually released as the 3rd European single from Talk That Talk (I think, discounting Talk That Talk which half took off but never got a video or anything), this thumping eurodance track is in a similar vein (although not quite as magnificent) as her million selling smash We Found Love. 31 Chart run: (71-10-7-12-15-19-25-27-31-37-41-43-48-59-63-66-73) UK peak: DNC (#1 in Sweden) From the album: Maraton Next it's Swedish hit of the summer, bonkers robo-pop track Flytta På Dej (Move On You). Even in Swedish, this song is one of the catchiest of the year for me and always worms its way into my head. Also another BJSC entry, Flytta pa dej was sadly a flop for Tinnmark (Freeze) despite being the 2nd highest placed of all 2012 BJSC entries in this chart (and probably my 3rd, 4th or 5th overall). --- That's it for tonight, aiming to finish this countdown by Friday! December 31, 201212 yr Nicki Minaj is basically Olly Murs in a wig (and no bulge) . http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lxcntqG1Yx1r1yksw.gif My arse >>>>>>>>>> your 'Radioactive' shade though :o
December 31, 201212 yr Let's see your ass then Haus :kink: we totes need to be fb friends ;_; http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1idpfx9q21qa3tt9.gif Hitting on me in an EOY Countdown! I like your style ;) And message your details if you want ^_^
January 1, 201312 yr Author 30 Chart run: (3-7-10-17-23-30-38-45-57-68-xx-7-3-3-7-12-18-23-29-32-37-40-44-55-59-64-74) UK peak: #92 :nocheer: From the album: Born To Die 'Red white blue's in the sky, summer's in the air and baby heaven's in your eyes' Kicking off the top 30 is indie queen 2012 Lana Del Rey, with her 2nd of 3 entries in this countdown. National Anthem was instantly an album highlight for me, even improving on the magnificent demo. Should have been released in place of Blue Jeans (AMAZING song but having been released as a double A side with Video Games beforehand, not the best single choice), although it probably would have only slightly lessened the flop! 29 Chart run: (6-3-7-9-10-11-14-18-23-33-30-35-40-49-54-61-70) UK peak: #82 :nocheer: From the album: Ceremonials 'I'm not giving up, I'm just giving in' More alternative sadness now, from everyone's favourited redheaded big voice Florence Welch. Rumoured to be used in the Titanic 3D re-release, it was set to be big, but that never materialised and this epic tragedy of a sad song had to make to do with #82 :( In Australia it fared better, peaking at #3 after extensive use on a TV promo. 28 Chart run: (1-4-6-7-11-12-12-11-13-21-26-36-40-40-39-42-44-47-55-53-53-57-60-64-68-71-73-75) UK peak: #2 From the album: Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded Back to the mainstream pop now, with Nicki's biggest solo to date. It spent a lengthy run in both the UK charts and my chart, with her newfound generic RedOne sound pleasing many. I do miss mixtape Nicki but if the tunes are like this I can forgive her for going generic. With a run like that, it should probably be higher here, but overplay brought it down a bit! 27 Chart run: (7-4-6-6-6-10-14-16-15-19-22)*still charting UK peak: #51 :nocheer: From the album: Chapter One - Greatest Hits 'Now that you know, this is my life, I won't be told what's supposed to be right' FLOP KELLY LOON :( Catch My Breath is the wonderfully uplifting lead single from her (flawlessly perfect) Greatest Hits collection. A relative flop for Kelly in my chart, this only reached #4 due to busy times but has steadily kept up fairly high. In the official charts, it's been a veritable flop sadly :( 26 Chart run: (21-13-8-9-9-7-10-12-22-22-19-27-33-35-44-56-69) UK peak: #2 From the album: Our Version Of Events 'When the money's spent and all my friends have vanished, and I can't seem to find no help or love for free' That woman finally makes an appearence! The first of her 3 entries here, one of the biggest selling singles of 2012 in the UK, is Emeli's ode to god, the annoyingly catchy Next To Me (ooh ooh ooh). Like Starships, it's been brought down a bit by overplay and admittedly she's on absolutely everything which even amuses me now, but this is a brilliantly catchy radio friendly track, if a bit too Adele to be fair :P
January 1, 201312 yr National Anthem and Never Let Me Go are both near perfect tracks from the two artists. Diabolic that they both flopped
January 1, 201312 yr Author ^ Totally agreed, such a shame because they're among each album's best tracks :( 25 Chart run: (11 13-18-21-36-45-57-xx-1-2-2-4-8-12-15-23-28-33-36-47-53-62-70-73) UK peak: #18 From the album: Our Version Of Events 'You won't see me at the parties, I guess I'm just no fun, I won't be turning up the radio singing baby you're the one' That woman again! This was the follow-up to her mega-hit Next To Me, but it didn't do as well despite being a gorgeous radio ready ballad. A performance on The Voice helped it peak top 20, and her first #1 hit in my chart, spending 15 weeks in my top 75 following it's peak. 24 Chart run: (1-2-2-4-7-9-9-11-14-16-23-27-32-36-42-47-57-64-60-66-74) UK peak: #9 From the album: Teenage Dream - The Complete Confection 'I was in the dark, I was falling hard with an open heart, how did I read the stars so wrong?' The 457th single from Teenage Dream, but one of the best for me (only beaten by Firework and E.T.) In sort of the same vein as E.T., this is an electronic downtempo track, but unlike E.T. it's more poppy and power ballad-y than hip hop. Impressively, this still made top 10 in the UK despite being very late into the campaign, and hit #1 in my chart (Katy's 5th, following California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework and E.T.). 23 Chart run: (2-3-6-7-14) UK peak: DNC (#1 in Australia) From the album: Samantha Jade 'I'm a rocket to the sun I'm a heartbeat on the run, that's what you what you've done to me' After winning X-Factor Australia, flopstar from the past Samantha Jade got a second shot at glory with her poptastic debut What You've Done To Me. As a pretty much perfect dance-pop song, it's a much more interesting winner's single than the covers we get (although admittedly, James' Arthur is still to come with Impossible and I do have a big soft spot for Little Mix, Leona and Alexandra's winner's single, especially Hallelujah, but that's another story)! 22 Chart run: (38-27-36-44-47-58-66-xx-5-3-3-4-6-7-9-10-11-13-17-23-32-43-49-53-63-67-73) UK peak: #40 From the album: Stronger 'Everybody has a dark side, do you love me? Can you love mine? Nobody's picture perfect but we're worth it, we know that we're worth it' Flop Kelly loon strikes again, as the 3rd single from Stronger and her 2nd of 3 entries in my 2012 EOY just misses top 20. On first listen, this wasn't a highlight of Stronger for me (although it entered top 40 on release week) although its release made me appreciate it more and I grew to love this typically Kelly pop-rock track about the fact nobody is perfect. 21 Chart run: (18-26-29-32-45-56-67-75-xx-2-2-5-9-17-20-25-23-31)*still charting UK peak: #1 From the album: Electronic Earth / Our Version Of Events (Special Edition) 'Would let me see beneath your beautiful, would you let me see beneath your perfect?' The 3rd and final for entry for Emeli is her beautiful (pun slightly intended) duet with Labirinth, which was a shock #1 (as the 6th single from Electronic Earth!) which only shot up after a performance on X-Factor. The success is well deserved, I've loved it since the album came out and their voices go so well, it's such a powerfully simple gorgeous track, certainly up there with the year's best #1s. January 1, 201312 yr Completely forgot Ronan even existed! :o Good to see somebody else still appreciating Emeli, Beneath Your Beautiful is so good  Looking forward to the top 20!
January 1, 201312 yr Author It has been overshadowed by the release of Red to be fair! It's a beautiful track but it's no We Are Never Getting Back Together, All Too Well or I Knew You Were Trouble :P ------ 20 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/5a/MirandaOverYou.jpg/220px-MirandaOverYou.jpg Chart run: (14 42-56-xx-28-19-18-21-35-42-50-63-70-64-35-13-5-7-8-11-13-19-23-27-38-41-55-66-75) UK peak: N/A (#35 in US) From the album: For The Record Kicking off the top 20 is a heartbreaking country ballad from one of my favourite singers, Miranda Lambert. Written by her husband Blake Shelton about his brother's death in a car crash, this was passed onto Miranda after Blake felt it was too emotional and he couldn't sing it without crying or nearly crying, then became the second single from Miranda's fourth album Four The Record. The only song in this EOY top 20 to not have peaked in my personal chart top 5, fact fans! 19 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/07/Sats_30_Days.png/220px-Sats_30_Days.png Chart run: (1-1-4-5-6-10-9-12-14-16-21-28-31-34-38-41-48-54-64-68-74-70-75) UK peak: #7 From the album: single only Continuing their usual run of success in my chart, The Saturdays hit #1 straight away with their 13th single 30 Days. But despite a held back release with plenty of time to build up airplay, it only hit #7 in the UK chart and quickly fell, cementing their status as the new flop girlband (and the fact they were only 'BRITAIN'S BIGGEST GIRLBAND!!!1!!1!' by default sadly). I doubt this will even be on their upcoming album, it was just to bridge the gap really. Business as usual, but this is a great summery club ready dance-pop anthem.

Dodgy lack of capitalisation in their name/annoying random full stop aside, they are great and this is their anthem is their pinnacle. Perhaps the best thing about this doing so well is that the wonderful Janelle Monae gets a hit to her name, but the song deserves all the success with or without her on it. 17 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/28/Borntodiesingle.png/220px-Borntodiesingle.png Chart run: (2-3-3-4-3-2-5-9-10-13-16-18-13-19-23-28-32-38-46-46-50-44-56-70) UK peak: #9 From the album: Born To Die 'Oh my heart it breaks every time that step that I take' 3rd and final entry from Lana, and her 2nd UK top 10 following Video Games. This was the lead single from her 2nd effort, typical Ellie in some ways but a fresh sound in others. It was her 3rd UK top 5 hit, although so far the era has failed to live up to the Lights/Bright Lights era. 15 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/48/James_Arthur_-_Impossible.png/220px-James_Arthur_-_Impossible.png Chart run: (1-1-2)*still charting UK peak: #1 From the album: single only 'Falling out of love is hard, falling for betrayal is worse' Yet another UK #1, I'm such a mainstream whore :P James won this year's X-Factor (thank god, I couldn't have tolerated Jahmene's cat murdering version of Let It Be on the radio :drama:) and his first single was a cover of Shontelle's 2010 CLASSIC (no shade will be tolerated) Impossible. Truth be told I was apprehensive when I heard he would be covering this as I love the original so much, and while this isn't quite as good as her version it's a brilliant debut, and easily the most interesting UK winner's single to date. January 1, 201312 yr We Are Young and Born To Die are just lush. I was a fan of Ellie in her first era (Under The Sheets >>>>>>>>>>> etc) but i've only just 'got' Anything Could Happen after hearing Figure 8 too. Loof Loof. Impossible is good too, but Union J do it best :kink:
January 1, 201312 yr James Arthur is about as interesting as a spoon and his version of that song is awful.
