Posted August 16, 200618 yr Anyone been to see this...? I have to say, I rather liked it. It portrays the 'notrorious' Bettie as actually quite a naive, wholesome and really quite nice Southern girl full of contradictions, who really never actually got why people enjoyed looking at pictures of her so much. She's very sympathetically portrayed by female director Mary Harron, and Gretscen Mol, who plays her, is quite uncannily similar to her in terms of looks. Mol gives an Oscar-worthy performance and frankly if she aint nominated I will be very peed off.... And, honestly, I just dont get what the hell is with the '18' certificate, there's nothing even remotely pornographic or really that shocking anywhere in the film, in fact, the films and images that Bettie was in are portrayed as things she actually enjoyed taking part in (in a bemused sort of way..) and certainly was not ashamed of. The black and white photography, interspersed with exaggerated 'technicolor-style' colour photography in some sequences, really captures the period superbly... An interesting film about a woman of many contradictions... 8/10
August 16, 200618 yr I've been looking forward to this film for ages. It's not out in Manchester until the end of the month.
August 16, 200618 yr Author I've been looking forward to this film for ages. It's not out in Manchester until the end of the month.  The advantages of living in London means I can see films sooner.... :P
August 16, 200618 yr I just skimmed your review because I was worried about spoilers. I think the film came out far too early in America for her to be in the Oscar race. Though she fits the profile in other ways: beautiful woman finding hidden depths.
August 16, 200618 yr Author I just skimmed your review because I was worried about spoilers. There's no plot details really mate, it's just a general review/impressions that I had of the film. I try NOT to give too many details of plots when I review films.... It would be an absolute bloody travesty if Gretschen Mol wasn't considered an Oscar contender..... <_<
August 20, 200618 yr Anyone been to see this...? I wanted to see this as i think Gretchen Mol is a good actor, liked her in The Shape of Things and music from another room (which was a freebie on something my mum had)
September 13, 200618 yr It would be an absolute bloody travesty if Gretschen Mol wasn't considered an Oscar contender..... <_< I've seen this now. I really enjoyed it. I don't think she'll get the nomination sadly. Or a win. For one thing, the character's too enigmatic. The nominees tend to bawl and weep (so it's obvious they're acting) whereas Mol is a lot more subtle than that. She also looks far too fit throughout. Charlize, Halle, Nicole, Hilary did not look so good in their oscar-winning films. Edited September 13, 200618 yr by Tim
