December 24, 201212 yr ZWEITAUSENDZWOLF *.* I expect the top 3 to be Twilight, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and Payphone.
December 24, 201212 yr Yay at this happening :yahoo: Would be nice to see how many songs are in both of our year-end charts. LANGUAGE 4 #1 PLZ :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
December 24, 201212 yr Author / \ 100 :: MAN WITHOUT COUNTRY :: "PUPPETS" / \ 17-24-40-x 0g2lLMmCtfE The first of just two songs on the list that are here entirely because of BuzzJack Song Contest (excluding my own entries). Anyone who hangs out in those parts probably knows what the higher one is. Anyway, this track was entered by N DNTN (152chris to those not versed in BJSC) in the 49th contest in October and came 4th, just missing out on a deserved top 3 ranking. Humbug. From first listen I knew this would be my top pointer in the contest and as it is it's my 2nd favourite discovery from BJSC in the ~3 years I've been participating. / \ 99 :: BREATHE CAROLINA :: "BLACKOUT" / \ 2-8-26-29-x(7)-12-10-15-30-x h2S3RvIHwGs lol. In retrospect this song is a bit NAFF and I don't get why I liked it so much when I was hardly a fan of similar acts like 3OH!3 and Cobra Starship but nonetheless, I fell in love with this when I first heard it, then quickly got tired of it. Then when it finally shifted itself to the UK to become a minor top 40 hit a couple of months later it managed a re-entry into the top 10, then I got tired of it super quickly again. Odd. / \ 98 :: EVERYTHING EVERYTHING :: "COUGH COUGH" / \ 8-5-11-34-x cjKcmZGhUrQ Eek, that chart run looks a bit SHIT now but that's just because I've only actually heard this song about twice ever. A comeback which I'm somehow finding difficult to be excited about despite how much I loved their debut. Still a dreadfully underrated band, was rather shocked + pleased at this song actually being somewhat of a success. It's not quite up to the standard of the likes of 'Schoolin'' and 'Final Form' but still, is good. 'Arc' for #1 plox
December 24, 201212 yr 'Cough Cough' in need of a better chart run :( You heard 'Kemosabe' yet? Really good stuff ill Manors 2 win
December 24, 201212 yr / \ 98 :: EVERYTHING EVERYTHING :: "COUGH COUGH" / \ 8-5-11-34-x because I've only actually heard this song about twice ever. Intrigued as to how you can rate this so highly?
December 24, 201212 yr Author Intrigued as to how you can rate this so highly? It doesn't take long for really good songs to root themselves in my affections. There are songs that I've only ever heard once that I would still say I love. (Plus hearing Everything Everything on the chart show was practically a highlight of the year [/sad]). It's the only such track in the top 100. 'Cough Cough' in need of a better chart run :( You heard 'Kemosabe' yet? Really good stuff ill Manors 2 win Not yet heard 'Kemosabe', no (I refer you to 'finding it difficult to be excited about their comeback' :P Really should listen to it). 'Cough Cough' may well re-enter my chart when the album comes out. Yay at this happening :yahoo: Would be nice to see how many songs are in both of our year-end charts. LANGUAGE 4 #1 PLZ :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: There's plenty of generic dance to come so probably quite a lot of common ground! Edited December 24, 201212 yr by Michael Bubré
December 24, 201212 yr Author / \ 97 :: SANTIGOLD :: "DISPARATE YOUTH" / \ 30-x mIMMZQJ1H6E Proof that sometimes I just can't recognise a good song when I hear it. Only barely scraped into my chart at the lowest possible position (as this was prior to my expansion to a top 40) for a single week and yet it's found its way into my top 100 of the year. How? The thing that persuaded me to revisit it was its appearance on some advert where it sounded far better than I ever remembered it being. Extremely infectious song, Santigold is probably someone I should pay more attention to. / \ 96 :: JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW :: "HIGHER LOVE" / \ 16-18-25-x c__noWWtdZg The original Steve Winwood version of this song is a classic and I quite liked a couple of songs I'd heard from Irish folk singer James prior to knowing of this song's existence. So when I found out about this for the first time (which happened to be when it entered the iTunes top 100 due to being featured on the ad for LoveFilm in late 2011, so two ad songs in a row) I had a feeling I'd love it and so I did. His vocal style is one I could understand some finding irritating but I think it works very well on this. A gorgeous cover. I also charted Tyler James' version off The Voice, which was a great cover of a great cover. Coverception~ / \ 95 :: S O H N :: "THE WHEEL" / \ 18-12-7-4-4-11-20-35-x AslPYSm7jfg My second favourite of my BJSC entries of the year (I had longlisted all bar Machines Don't Care for an appearance on here but only this and one other survived), it's my desperate and failed attempt at success after a year of midtables and flops. S O H N had of course just won Unknown Pleasures with the track 'O S C I L L A T E'. To be fair, I actually heard this song on the radio before I knew who it was by and instantly loved it, it just felt a little bit cheap to send. All was okay, however, as it only ended up coming 19th. A rather unusual but very catchy song. The vocals are almost unnecessary on it, it's all about the 'chant' in the background. (I apologise for my awful commentary, it's not going to get any better)
December 24, 201212 yr Cough Cough =    I generally like your music taste, so there should be some good songs in your countdown that are going to come up. :D
December 24, 201212 yr Author / \ 94 :: THE MACCABEES :: "PELICAN" / \ 20-18-12-11-9-4-8-13-22-x Rcp8SE_FxBg One of the first biggish hits of the year on my chart, technically from 2011 but it was released in 2012 so it qualifies for inclusion here. I've been a minor fan of The Maccabees since their first album, I have never actually listened to any of their albums because I'm terminally shit at listening to albums but they sure do have some incredible singles and this is probably their best. 'Feel To Follow' only just missed out on making the top 100 as well. I'm not sure why this song is called 'Pelican'? If anyone knows please do enlighten me. It's quite a nice title though. / \ 93 :: FLORENCE + THE MACHINE :: "NO LIGHT, NO LIGHT" / \ 25-20-20-21-19-20-23-x HGH-4jQZRcc A band for which I make an exception to being shit at listening to albums. This was not a highlight of 'Ceremonials' when I first listened to it and I still think it's one of their weaker singles but the single release and the BRITs performance went a long way to making this song grow on me. Was great live at Reading Festival as well (I thought I re-entered it at the time like I did with some of their other songs but apparently I didn't - must have been a brain blank at the time). That video is a little bit of a WTF moment though. / \ 92 :: WILLY MOON :: "YEAH YEAH" / \ 21-17-15-19-29-x(1)-16-... GaWXA5e0YTQ A good example of me being a complete mainstream whore. I heard this quite a lot when it was first making the rounds on Radio 1 and thought absolutely nothing of it, then along comes its use in an advert (3rd time in 5 songs) and becoming a minor chart hit and suddenly I love it. As with 'Disparate Youth' I can't comprehend how I thought this was average first time around. Makes me wonder what other random flops playlisted by Radio 1 that I never liked much would grow on me infinitely given a bit of wider exposure. Looking forward to seeing what else this New Zealander has up his sleeve. Edited January 1, 201312 yr by Bré
December 24, 201212 yr I'm not mad on the Willy Moon song. He sounds like an international version of Jake Bugg to me. As for the Maccabes, Feel To Follow is their best song by far! It's a shame that it didn't make it into your Top 100. :(
December 24, 201212 yr Author / \ 91 :: SUB FOCUS :: "TIDAL WAVE" (FEAT. ALPINES) / \ 15-10-12-14-17-23-32-36-... B8vlk1UR99k Arguably the most commercial thing Sub Focus has done to date so it's not too surprising that it's his biggest hit to date (should have gone top 10). Unlike 'Out The Blue' which sounded to me like a flat attempt at commercial success that was well below his usual output quality, this one is almost as good as he was 'back in the days'. I wasn't expecting much of it based on 'Out The Blue' and also Alpines' 'Got Me Wrong' (a BJSC entry, which I didn't find particularly great) so it was a pleasant surprise that I liked this so much. That instrumental *.* Here's hoping he never comes out with a dud like 'Out The Blue' again. / \ 90 :: NERO :: "REACHING OUT" / \ 18-8-5-4-5-7-11-18-25-x sJVQJ4-n_cA Another one which I wasn't sure whether or not to count it for 2012, I think it was actually released as a single in 2011 but it peaked in my chart in the first week of 2012. Nero definitely picked their singles very well, 'Me And You' aside the songs they released are the highlights of their album. I forget this song exists a lot of the time which is why it's so comparatively low (also the fact it first charted last year contributes to that) but I actually prefer this to 'Promises', making it my third favourite of theirs behind the incredible 'Guilt' and 'Innocence'. The video is pretty good too and if you look closely you may see some triangles in it. / \ 89 :: SBTRKT :: "HOLD ON" (FEAT. SAMPHA) / \ 7-4-6-17-x _x6DmYxnBaI My favourite song from SBTRKT, an incredibly underrated producer who should be doing big things but still continues to be reasonably obscure. I want to use a word other than 'gorgeous' as I've already used that once today but I can't think of any other words, so... just a gorgeous song. I'm not sure why this had such a short chart run, I can't use the same excuse I used for 'Cough Cough' because I heard this loads at the time. That's it for today! On schedule so far who'da thunk.
