Most Exciting Artist For 2013

We start off our looking back at 2012 with a look forward to 2013, which I’m sure is ironic or something. This award is an attempt to find out which (for the most part, new) artist is going to impact biggest in the Umiirukan chart next year. Though some already familiar faces will crop up, they will be acts that I don’t feel have yet reached their full potential. The nominees are:

2NE1

Charli XCX

Florrie

Foxes

HyunA

Four of the above artists have already had top 10 hits in Umiiruka, with Charli XCX already having a #1 and #3. However, none of them have released albums here, so there is still potential for them to have much more impact. In any case, the winner is...

HyunA! Probably the least well known artist in Umiiruka on this list, HyunA has yet to release any material over here. Singles ‘Bubble Pop’ and ‘Ice Cream’ drew much attention on the internet and of course in her native Korea, but she is most well known here for her version of PSY’s smash ‘Gangnam Style’ and that 'Trouble Maker' collab with that random Asian guy. Although the reception to her solo singles has not been all that positive here, she is seen as an artist with huge potential due to her parallels with the likes of Britney Spears and Shy’m, both of which are huge stars in Umiiruka. HyunA launches her US campaign in 2013, and is expected to be a factor on our own charts too, especially if she makes more stuff like 'Trouble Maker'.

Best New Artist

And straight from looking at which ‘new’ artists will have the most impact in 2013, we look at which new artists had the most impact in 2012. Here are the nominations:

Azealia Banks

iamamiwhoami

Kyarypamyupamyu

Lana Del Rey

TAL

So technically some of these artists aren’t even new. But all of them either released their first albums this year or only came to Umiiruka’s attention this year. So shut up. The winner is....

To the shock of absolutely nobody, Lana Del Rey! Lana released her first single ‘Video Games’ last year, but album ‘Born To Die’ only came in January of this year. Needless to say, she’s been hugely successful in Umiiruka. Her album (and subsequent ‘Paradise’ EP) was critically acclaimed and hugely successful, and she’s one of the most consistent presences on our singles chart. Amazing music, amazing videos, amazing personality – what more can you ask for in a popstar?

Florrie + 2NE1 :(

Definitely the right winner for best new artist, there is no other like Miss Del Rey.

Look Lana, I'm really happy for you and all that and I have no idea who this TAL creature is...but they're one of the best new artists of all time and deserve that award.

Best BJSC Discovery

And now we move on to a celebration of the BuzzJack Song Contest that Umiiruka joined this year. The song contest has delivered many a hit in our country (including one #1!) and it’s safe to say the Umiirukan charts would be completely different without it. But let’s see what our very favourite entry of the year was. The nominees are:

Brown Eyed Girls – Abracadabra

Dasha Luks – Diskoteka

Nordpolen - När mitt blod pumpar i dig

Seo In Young – Anymore

The Storm – Raver

Oddly enough, for a contest that delivered many a top 10 hit, only two find their way into the nominees list, while two barely top 20 hits and one that didn’t even chart find their way here. The odds are surely in favour of the #1 (that being ‘Anymore’) but the winner is...

And the award goes, somewhat controversially, to the only nominee that didn’t chart! That being ‘Abracadabra’ by Brown Eyed Girls, which didn’t chart based on some bizarre recurrent rule in the early days of the chart. In any case, ‘Abracadabra’ is an iconic K-Pop song in Umiiruka, with the incredible production of the song and its endlessly gifable video elevating it above all others. Its existence makes Brown Eyed Girls possibly the most popular K-Pop group in Umiiruka, despite them not releasing any new material in the country this year. 2013 material is highly anticipated. Seo In Young agog.

Best ESC Entry

And straight from one song contest to another, we celebrate the best of Eurovision 2012! Here are the nominees:

Anggun – Echo (You And I)

Loreen – Euphoria

Nina Zilli - L'amore è Femmina (Out of Love)

Sabina Babayeva – When the Music Dies

Valentina Monetta – The Social Network Song

We have two #1s here, a #2 and a #3 (as well as a long-running top 15!!!) – the competition is tough. In most award ceremonies on here, Loreen would storm this. But the winner in Umiiruka is...

Anggun, with ‘Echo (You And I)’! A #3 hit here, it had immense longevity and sold over 500k. The only ESC entrant to outsell her was Nina Zilli, whose single cleared 750k. However, Anggun was hampered by her song premiering long before this chart started. 'Echo' was definitely the most underrated ESC entry this year, but at least Umiiruka (and Numayania!) showed her some love.

K-Pop SLAYING HERE. Woo to Brown Eyed Girls for winning that.

BUT,

Lana Del Rey isn't new. INVALID WINNER THERE.

Best Foreign Language Song (Non-Eurovision)

This award is really very pointless considering foreign language songs regularly do very well here, but alas. The awards committee didn’t want to appear racist. Here are your nominees:

2NE1 – I Love You

Dasha Luks – Diskoteka

Mylène Farmer - À l'ombre

Shy’m – Et alors !

Seo In Young – Anymore

French, Korean and (randomly) Russian are all represented here. The overwhelming favourite is of course Shy’m, who is nominated with the biggest selling song of the year. But the winner is...

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Shy’m walks away with this. ‘Et alors !’ was a true behemoth on the Umiirukan chart, and it failing to win this would surely cause riots the likes of which the world has never seen.

Nina, Loreen, Nordpolen and Seo In Young got ROBBED.

I rather like the winners but they aren't incredible or anything.

Best Group

We initially had a “Best Male” award but thought it would be somewhat farcical to give an award to someone the country only vaguely likes so we skipped out on that. Best Female is gone too seeing as all the AotY noms are female. So here are your best group noms:

2NE1

Girls Aloud

Girls’ Generation

iamamiwhoami

MS MR

Quite the international bunch here, and all five groups have had significant chart success in Umiiruka this year. But only one act can win, and that act is...

Girls’ Generation! The Korean girl group with more members than you can shake PSY at had a grand total of four top 40 hits in Umiiruka in 2012, including a #7 with ‘Paparazzi’, which was the first ever Korean song to go top 10 here. SNSD may have been surpassed by several K-Pop groups when it comes to peaks but they were the original and are so far the only ones to release an album here so pick up this award.

Video of the Year

And as we head into the BIG awards, Video of the Year is our first. 2012 was an insanely good year for music videos, admittedly mostly thanks to the presence of Lana Del Rey. For the sake of her not completely taking up the nominations list, she was only allowed one nomination here. But every non-Lana video on this list is incredible in its own right. The nominees are:

Kyarypamyupamyu – Fashion Monster

Lana Del Rey – National Anthem

M.I.A – Bad Girls

Mylène Farmer - À l'ombre

PSY – Gangnam Style

All amazing (and hugely different) videos. From the wonderful attitude shown in ‘Bad Girls’ to the insane ‘Fashion Monster’ to the classy bizarreness of ‘À l'ombre’, we were certainly spoilt for variety this year. But only one video can win, and that is...

‘National Anthem’ by Lana Del Rey! Again, an inevitable win, but this is the definition of an 11/10 video. Lana has a videography with a consistency that very few acts can claim, and Nat Anthem is definitely its peak so far. Succeeding in not only being a stunning visual to look at but elevating the accompanying music to new levels, it was perfection and blew every other video this year out of the water.

(now would be the time for a Kanye moment)

Oh YES. Girls' Generation slaying 2NE1. Best view EVA.
Nina, Loreen, Nordpolen and Seo In Young got ROBBED.

I rather like the winners but they aren't incredible or anything.

What is wrong with your signature. It's even worse than my current username.

Oh, and National Anthem is the best video of the year by far.
