August 17, 200618 yr Author This is a fun bits and pieces thread for everything that makes Darius the person he is. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002MY3.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1115789836_.jpg Alanis Morisette - Jagged Little Pill One of the albums that Darius credits with getting him through his teenage years. August 18, 200618 yr Author Today I'm thinking of .............. Ancient Romans What's the connection with Darius? I can think of at least 2 that I could do in say 3 links. Have a go. No limit to the number of links in your chain. I'll tell you when anyone makes the same connection as me or by midnight if it hasn't already been posted. Here's a silly connection for starters: The story goes that the Emperor Nero fiddled while Rome burnt. Darius also plays violin. Edited August 18, 200618 yr by Baytree
August 18, 200618 yr errh, have to say I don't know now, thinking Trojans were something to do with the greeks - perhaps they all wore togas :D
August 18, 200618 yr Author Well done. That is one of the connections I had in mind. The Ancient Romans fought the Greeks. The Greeks laid siege to the Trojans and built the famous Trojan Horse in which they hid soldiers. The Trojans produced by Scottish Opera featured Darius Danesh as a ten year old Trojan boy.
August 18, 200618 yr Author Just been reading about the Trojans - it's apparantly by Berlioz and is an epic. No wonder Darius says it's little known ..... it 's 5 hours long! I haven't yet found any exact details of the show's run or whether it toured, but Google did turn up a quote from a book of essays which says that Darius joined Scottish Opera in 1990. Unfortunately I can't get the link to work to find out if there are many other details of his time there. He must have been there when the legendary Sir Alexander Gibson was conductor. How amazing! Any other Ancient Romans links? Edited August 18, 200618 yr by Baytree
August 18, 200618 yr Author Another connection, Darius was brought up in Bearsden. Bearsden is on the site of St Antonine's Wall which was built by........the Ancient Romans...and marked their most northerly invasion point on the present day UK. Were the crack Roman troops too feart to fight the wild Picts who lived further north? :arrr: The ruins of the wall are still there today. More tentative........ Roman soldiers and Darius both wore garments which some people might describe as skirts.

August 21, 200618 yr An lazy one for today..........my screen name - Baytree Not sure what you are wanting  How about... Bay tree This tree is named only in Ps. 37:35, King James Version The Hebrew word so rendered is ereh, which simply means "native born", i.e., a tree not transplanted, but growing on its native soil, and therefore luxuriantly. or..... The Bay Tree Copyright 2005 by Jeff Suzuki There was an ancient king of this land Who ruled by force of his tyrant's hand He said that any that he might meet Must bow down low at his royal feet. One day he came to an old bay tree And said that "You must bow down to me. Or else my justice will strike you down Like snakes that lash out from under ground." The tree said "Kings should enjoy the sun, I've seen them come and go ev'ry one, And none but asked me to genuflect, Save those whose reigns deserved no respect." The king said "You will obey my word, No matter how foolish or how absurd, No prince, no peasant, no bird, no stone Shall dare defy a word from my throne." The tree said "You've got a lot to learn, Respect is something that must be earned, On sheep or cows you may force your way, But men and women must have their say." The king in fury cut down the tree Its limbs he scattered from sea to sea He said "These broken boughs testify That none my slightest wish may defy! "So on my throne or my chamber pot, If I should force out a royal thought You'd best leap up to obey my whims, Or else you'll end like these broken limbs." But trees will grow where there's fertile ground, And from the seeds scattered all around, A sapling straight and tall quickly grew, On royal whims and the morning dew. The king's long gone and his name's forgot, His deeds unsung and his works unsought, But bay leaves everywhere testify To those who would a bad king defy.
August 21, 200618 yr Author I'm looking for any connection that can be made from my word or phrase of the day to Darius. I'd like others to post some words too so i can have a few guesses. Well done, the bible is indeed a connection. Your bay tree reference is from the King James version within which there is also a mention in the Old Testament to King Darius the Mede in the story about Daniel and the Lion's Den. Darius Danesh was named after the ancient Persian kings . I'm not sure which one of the 3 was the Mede though. That wasn't the main connection I was thinking about surprisingly enough. August 21, 200618 yr Author Maybe Baytree is unfair as I don't think many people will know the reference. I'll think about another word and I'll just post the Baytree connection later on as a fact like the Peter Pan and Alanis Morisette ones.
August 21, 200618 yr Author I think I'm flogging a dead thread here but before abandoning it, I have to keep my word and explain the Baytree connection. Darius believes in a healthy lifestyle. Darius also enjoys meeting people. In his youth Darius combined the two by meeting up with his friends at a local vegetarian establishment called The Baytree Cafe. It's a fairly small and homely place and it features in the 2002 BBC documentary on Darius. In the scene in the cafe, Johnny - yes that Johnny!, the hero or villain who unwittingly propelled Darius into Popstars and also nearly turned him into a Michael Fish wannabe, - is complaining that 'they', presumably Mercury/19 suits are working his pal Darius too hard and D is protesting.
August 21, 200618 yr Yes I remember that.....I have a very, very poor tape of that....it's such a shame. Sorry the thread isn't working....I'm no good at this type of thing....when I see the answers...not a problem
August 24, 200618 yr Author Yes I remember that.....I have a very, very poor tape of that....it's such a shame. Sorry the thread isn't working....I'm no good at this type of thing....when I see the answers...not a problem  Come on think, girl, you can do this! :) The connection between Darius and Sylvester Stallone is easy to work out if you first consider what Sly is most famous for.
August 24, 200618 yr Rocky Found a connection...not what you are thinking though.... He turned down the role of John McClane in Die Hard and the part went to Bruce Willis instead, who starred with Natasha in The Whole Nine (and ten) Yards, who Darius is living with....how's that
August 24, 200618 yr Author Now that is fantastic! Are you keeping mum about the rather more simplistic connection to Rocky so someone else can have a go at figuring it out or do you fancy doing the double and posting it?
