August 18, 200618 yr One of the few pop groups of the 60's to sign a new record deal (Decca in 69), which allowed them total artistic freedom to write thier own songs and choose which songs they wanted to record & release . They had initially been signed to CBS, who had them record pop cover versions of old songs, hence ob li di ob la da etc.. Alot of artists in the 60's were talented musicians and songwriters but were forced by record companies, who would only allow them to release singles that were pop cover versions of what was usually US hits. Hence artists like Gene Pitney, Kenny Lynch etc could all write songs, but often always recorded covers or songs written by Brill Building songwriters. Pitney wrote for the Stones and The Crystals. Lynch for the Small Faces & Cilla Black Edited August 18, 200618 yr by fiesta
