Music magazines show growth and volatility

Source: Music Week

The music magazine market has grown by 3% year-on-year according to ABC figures issued today, but there have been marked contrasts in fortunes, especially in the titles aimed at the older end of the demographic.

In figures covering the first six months of the year, Q has put in a stable performance and remains clear market leader with circulation of 158,271, which is 1.3% down on the equivalent period in 2005.

However, beneath Q it is all change. Mojo has increased 6.2% to 121,746 in contrast to rival Uncut, which slumped a dramatic 19.3% to leave its readership at 88,756. Meanwhile, Classic Rock shot up by 26.4% to 56,037.

Moving down the age demographic, NME put on a solid 0.8% increase to 80,186, but Kerrang! shot past it in the league table by increasing circulation by 24.2% to 80,186.

Further down still, Top Of The Pops magazine saw a year on year decline of 16.6% to 116,746, although this represents a 21% increase on the second half of 2005, when it dropped below the 100,000-mark for the first time.
