Will.i.am feat Britney Spears - Scream & Shout climbs to #1

So claiming the first new #1 of 2013, Will.i.am rises to #1 after spending 4 weeks in the top 3 with Scream & Shout alongside Britney Spears. Will.i.am thus claims his second #1 as lead credit, after last year's This Is Love (featuring Eva Simons). It is Will's 9th UK #1 in total now - 5 as a Black Eyed Pea (Where Is The Love, Boom Boom Pow, I Gotta Feeling, Meet Me Halfway and The Time) and 2 as a featured artist (Usher's OMG and The Script's Hall Of Fame). Meanwhile Britney had 5 #1s as a solo artist (Baby One More Time, Born To Make You Happy, Oops I Did It Again, Toxic and Everytime), Scream & Shout is her 6th. Mr I Am has therefore had 11 UK #1s from 2003-2013, whereas Britney's 6 date from 1998 to 2013. Scream & Shout will appear on Will.i.am's forthcoming album #willpower, due out next month.

David Bowie - Where Are We Now? enters at #6

Wednesday of this week was David Bowie's 66th birthday, and with that came the announcement of a new album and single which would mark his return to music after a 10 year period of silence. The new single Where Are We Now was released and got to #1 on iTunes for a part of the week, however there was a great deal of controversy over whether it should be eligible to chart. The reason for that is that those who pre-order the album also get the single, but the single is also available as a standalone purchase. Distinguishing those sales was the issue, however in the end it has charted as the week's highest new entry at #6. David Bowie made his chart debut in 1969 with the classic Space Oddity, the first of his 23 top 10 hits. He has had 5 #1s (Space Oddity in 1973, Ashes To Ashes, Let's Dance, Under Pressure with Queen and Dancing In The Street with Mick Jagger). Bowie was last seen in the charts in 2003 with #38 single New Killer Star, however his last top 10 was Jump They Say, a #9 hit back in 1993. His last single to peak higher than this was 1986's #2 hit Absolute Beginners. Biggest hit in 27 years for David Bowie ... who'd have thought?

Lethal Bizzle scored a #7 hit with Oi as part of More Fire Crew in 2007 and a #11 hit of his own with Pow (Forward) in 2004. The only other new entry this week comes from US rock band Black Veil Brides at #20 with Wretched And Divine - The Story Of The Wild Ones. Lumineers reach the top 10 for the first time with their album, Taylor Swift is back in the top 10 with Red, Alt-J are back in the top 20 making an awesome wave, as is Frank Ocean with his Channel Orange.
