Posted January 20, 201312 yr The manic new year continues in my charts, though only 14 of my Top 40 have made the UK Top 40, which is quite a low proportion. Put it down to records hanging around longer than needed in the real world and pushing out great ones.. OK, it was a close Top 4, any could have taken it, but Roxette edged it, with their 3rd Number one, the last 2 both in 1990, quite a gap to wait! Loreen goes one higher than Euphoria, I know I'm late on this by buzzjack charters, but better late than never:) Then there's Petula Clark, rocketing up from 75 to 3. She's had reissues charting over the decades, such as Downtown at 1 in 1988, but this is her first hit new material for 41 years, the last one being the song by Yvonne Elliman at 18 by coincidence! It's hard to believe that time gap could ever be beaten! To put it in perspective she's 80, yet the new record could easily fit into Radio One's playlist, without mentioning who it is, say after a Lana Del Ray track (not that ageist radio One likes Lana Del Ray that much, and "old" people over 35 (except 45ish-year-David Guetta) never mind 80). Just to point out when I was 14 I didn't care how old a pop star was, I liked the record or I didn't. I liked Petula and she was already pushing 40. The Fortunes enter with a cover of her song, unreleased and from the 60's (because I was youtubing petula), and they were also last charting 41 years ago. Rihanna's still strong, new act Laura Mvula has a fab new video and an exciting new track, and goes Top 10, along with Madness, who have had 21 Top 10's, and at least one in each decade since the 70's. National Treasures! Kristina Train has a second Top 20 with a much better track than the one lined up for the next single. Newish band I Am Kloot have a goodie too, and Justin Timberlake at long last reappears with a goodie (he's had 2 solo number ones in my chart, plus one with NSync). I was saddened he didn't get to number one this week with his on sale on radio unnanounced release, it would have been great to stuff the "play it for 6 weeks to get a high entry brigade". Still, at least Will n Britney thwarted the plans of others (with a record that wasnt on the radio for weeks prior to release, hooray!). Haven't heard the new Overtones song, I presume it's from the second album which I keep meaning to check as I liked the first, and I love that Four Seasons-esque old school male vocal style. Deee-Lite is one of my favourite records ever, both to dance to and to play if I'm DJing at a party (a hobby of mine). Good to see Kimberley on the climb too, but I hope she doesn't represent us at Eurovision, she doesn't have the solo performance experience. Speaking of song contests, the registration for the Buzzjack Song Contest is open now, and I'm hosting it this month. I loved Euphoria too, right from the moment I heard it, sometimes it's just depends who's around for chart peaks and Euphoria came up against 2 all-time classics:) Ooh glad you like Petula, I'm itching to download it! Hurts are great, I saw them support Scissor Sisters and they were fab! Baker Street is my all-time favourite record but it doesnt have the most points, Cilla, well I've got to let her do a million before she gets the boot so she can join the list:) When you youtube Petula, the only versions ive found are hyphenated as Petula Clark-cut copy me, otherwise it doesnt come up:) its worth looking though... cheers john
