As an alternative to Geeza's excellent thread on songs not deserving of #1, I thought it would be a nice idea to run down the songs most and least deserving of #1 using a chart runs system.

 

271 songs have made #1 in the last 10 years - the most recent being "Scream & Shout" by will.i.am and Britney Spears and the oldest being "Stop Living The Lie" by David Sneddon.

 

I'll be starting with the 134 songs least deserving of #1, followed by the 135 songs most deserving of #1.

Just missing out on the half-way mark is Nizlopi's "JCB Song", starting the countdown at #136. Olly Murs has his first of two entries in the shortest running chart with debut single "Please Don't Let Me Go". Pussycat Dolls' second chart topper is at #133 - their first chart topper will be in the longest running half. We have some recent #1s from Sam and The Womp and Labrinth - the latter will definitely be amongst the long runners when it finishes its chart run. We finish with DJ Fresh's longest runner featuring Rita Ora. Louder is still to come.

Oops! It appears I have done my math wrong and there is actually 136 songs in the shortest running countdown and 135 in the long runners :P

To be fair, Beneath Your Beautiful wouldn't be in this list if you didn't decide to include songs that were still charting. That's my only criticism about your countdown.

 

Aside from that, this is a very good idea and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the chart! :D

Hot Right Now and Louder both have similar chart runs, so I suspect Louder to come up in the next couple of posts.

 

I was listening to Stickwitu the other day; it's not one of theirs I usually listen to and there is many other Pussycat Dolls songs that I prefer, but it's a really lovely song, especially the second half of the song. :wub: I definitely prefer it to Don't Cha [/overrated].

Pixie Lott starts off with the first of two entries in the shortest #1s chart with debut single "Mama Do (uh oh, uh oh)". Mario Winans from 2004 is at #126, I wonder what he's doing now. Fatman Scoop starts off the top 125 with a song that I like and most people hate. A surprise entry from Beyonce at #124, despite it being a classic it did not have a massively long chart run - however that may be because it was released in 2003. David Sneddon who topped the UK chart exactly 10 years ago is at #122 and Buzzjack favourite Kelly Clarkson is at #121 with her best song to date "My Life Would Suck Without You".

 

Already some surprises with classics such as Crazy in Love and Yeah! appearing so low thanks to the usual short chart runs back then.

Yeah, this gives huge bias to recent songs. I think we all know JCB was a much bigger hit than Mama Do, for example.

Stickwitu is the only song from the Pussycat Dolls I really love :wub: I agree with Liam about Don't Cha being overrated.

The forgotten classic dance smash by Shapeshifters is at #117, followed by Pixie's 2nd entry at #116. Despite spending 4 weeks at #1, "Make Luv" had a short chart run after leaving the top spot and makes it in at #115. Ne-Yo's most recent chart topper and B.o.B's debut chart topper are in the shorter end of this section. DJ Fresh's second entry "Louder" is at #112 ,despite having better first week sales than "Hot Right Now" its chart run was nothing impressive and finishes higher than that. Gareth Gates' single for Comic Relief is last in this section. We will be seeing many charity singles in this countdown.

"JCB" is lower than "Mama Do" because this countdown is about shortest running #1s - so the bigger hits will be lower on this countdown :D

 

Then when I do the longest running #1s countdown, it'll be the other way round :D

The first of two Oasis songs in the short countdown, "The Importance Of Being Idle" is one of their best songs ever - unfortunately most of their other 00s songs aren't that good. Robbie Williams still has time to lengthen his chart run but until then he is at #109. Singles by Ne-Yo, JLS, Madonna and will.i.am also appear in this section. Britney Spears' classic "Toxic" wasn't only hurt in sales because of it's release date (2004) but also has a short chart run because of it. Mint Royale is helped by it's original release in 2005 but the Britain's Got Talent effect didn't last for very long, only spending 6 weeks top 40 in 2008. Nelly Furtado is at #102. This is no surprise to some chart geeks who were annoyed at it being taken off the charts because of a silly rule. Roll Deep just escape the top 100 with "Good Times" however their follow up "Green Light" will be in the top 100.

I think that it's my favourite Britney song as well. :wub: It's very close between Stronger and Toxic though.

 

And I agree with you about Spirit In The Sky as well, it reminds me of my sixth birthday. :blush:
