June 8, 201312 yr Author Good evening, John "The Smurf Song" :music: I love Smurfs and most their songs. Debut for my # 1 : Renaissance - Northern Lights. Some years after it Annie Haslam (lead singer of Renaissance) will have the unsuccessful, but very nice single "In The Bleak Midwinter" Most intresting entry here : Maria Muldaur's good song. Never heard it before, even when I worked with 1978 retro charts. Coco, Blondie, Abba, Brotherhood Of Man - everything is a classic retro pop for me. Thanks Alex, I obviously liked the Smurfs at the time too:) I suppose it's kinda cute  Northern Lights entered my chart early on, then went much higher after radio picked up on it and it became a hit. I'm still going to check out that Annie song when Ive a spare moment to go through your links in your number one charts B-) Maria Muldaur was great. She had a marvellous 1974 record called Midnight At The Oasis and some decent follow-ups such as Gringo In Mexico. Glad you found one you didnt know! cheers john

Thanks Andrey, yes ELO & Squeeze had both been Top 5 earlier both bonafide number one classics & Out Of The Blue is still one of my absolute top-rated albums. I may go see Glen Tilbrook later in the year when he does Wimborne again. Thin Lizzy had some classics, my faves Dont Believe A Word and Killer On The Loose. Rosalie I liked quite a bit but there were so many others I loved more at the time B-) Yes, Scotland were all the rage in June 78, Argentine Melody was also a hit (world cup theme tune). Ole Ola wasnt really a great record though Rod was doing his best to push Scotland.... MME were great, I pretty much liked everything they did, plus I loved Manfred Mann when I was a kid. Saw the Manfred's a couple of times, great live (as are Squeeze) The Stranglers were my top punk band of the time, i always found their stuff a bit more interesting than most punk bands - at least till some went New Wave/pop. Thats not to say Sex Pistols werent awesomely energetic and vitriolic and influential, I just prefer melody if it's on offer.... Yes, Miss You was a great comeback, The Stones hadnt really done anything that impressed me since Tumbling Dice, so it was a welcome boost for them for 5 years or so, before they largely degenerated into a (brilliant) live touring greatest hits act, give or take the occasional good single. cheers! john

Yep, it's hard to resist the temptation when you've got over 50 platinum albums and 30-40 years behind... :D John, if you ever bump into "The Rolling Stones: Some Girls - Live in Texas 1978" DVD (i believe they even released this on BlueRay), do take it! The tour followed immediately on the release of the Some Girls album. The concert is not in a stadium but a theatre and the band perform without backing singers and big production support. No horns, no special effects and the result is totally amazing!

Thanks Andrey, I'd love to see them in a small venue (fat chance!) but I did catch them at Wembley Stadium on one of their mega-tours, Mick can still do the rock frontman and the back catalogue is so large you leave with a long list of great songs they didn't have time to do....! cheers! john
July 25, 201311 yr Author JULY 1978 Running a few weeks behind the Top Of The Pops repeats on the BBC, must try and catch up. No 9 weeks for Olivia & John at the top in here, it's Manfred Mann, The Motors and Clout - a bit of a South African invasion for two of them! The music scene was ab fab to coin a phrase, Stones, Kate, and oodles of other goodies at the top, and plenty of obscure non-chart stuff at the bottom. It wouldn't be 1978 without a Bee Gees song entering (Rare Earth) and pop folk was making inroads with Lindisfarne and Renaissance. Ah good days! Feel free to compare with the BBC charts of the time - mine's better. September 20, 201311 yr Author SEPTEMBER 1978 I started to listen avidly to Paul Gambaccini's American countdown about this time, which is why a lot more American hits appear, and enter earlier than in the UK charts, I was also in student digs, living with a family in Lincoln for my 2nd year at College watching Star Trek re-runs, visiting my student girlie friends in their digs and soooo jealous that my best mate was in Wisconsin on a student exchange programme and they wouldnt let me go. The main reason I chose Lincoln was for that and they changed the rules so degree students weren't eligible. Boooo! Me, I instead got done by the police for riding a bike with no lights cos I was scared of getting mugged like another student had been. We were so poor we couldnt afford lights...:) Chartwise, it was all War Of The Worlds, 10CC and Abba, with a healthy dose of fab new wave and disco. Some of those acts banished by the BBC in the re-runs appear in my charts however. I can't excuse Arthur & Hylda though, it was funny, what, for a week? four weeks is unforgiveable! 2nd September chart FOREVER AUTUMN Justin Hayward 1 5 7 13 19 DREADLOCK HOLIDAY 10CC 2 1 2 1 2 SUBSTITUTE Clout 3 6 8 14 18 NORTHERN LIGHTS Renaissance 4 8 16 24 32 SUPERNATURE Cerrone 5 4 4 5 13 LIFE'S BEEN GOOD TO ME Joe Walsh 6 13 26 33 42 JILTED JOHN Jilted John 7 2 3 6 8 OH WHAT A CIRCUS David Essex 8 3 5 7 9 THREE TIMES A LADY The Commodores 9 14 23 20 22 YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John 10 10 17 18 24 BROWN GIRL IN THE RING/RIVERS OF BABYLON Boney M 11 9 19 19 21 5-7-0-5 City Boy 12 17 30 35 43 WALK ON BY The Stranglers 13 21 28 34 47 IF THE KIDS ARE UNITED Sham 69 14 18 31 48 61 ANTHEM The New Seekers 15 22 32 38 44 AN EVERLASTING LOVE Andy Gibb 16 12 10 12 16 STAY Jackson Browne 17 25 37 40 45 BOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE A Taste Of Honey 18 23 33 42 54 COLD AS ICE Foreigner 19 29 38 49 62 IT'S RAINING Darts 20 28 34 44 55 DANCING IN THE CITY Marshall-Hain 21 31 36 32 38 AIRPORT The Motors 22 32 35 37 39 KISS YOU ALL OVER Exile 23 16 12 8 11 WILD WEST HERO E.L.O. 24 35 43 43 48 BABY STOP CRYING Bob Dylan 25 33 56 71 WHO ARE YOU The Who 26 34 39 53 63 I THOUGHT IT WAS YOU Herbie Hancock 27 27 14 10 10 GREASE Frankie Valli 28 7 6 3 3 GALAXY OF LOVE Crown Heights Affair 29 19 13 11 15 COME BACK AND FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED Gladys Knight & The Pips 30 40 61 FORGET ABOUT YOU The Motors 31 30 20 21 26 TOP OF THE POPS The Rezillos 32 26 21 27 41 IT'S ONLY MAKE BELIEVE Child 33 24 18 26 34 SIGN OF THE TIMES Bryan Ferry 34 39 46 65 RUN FOR HOME Lindisfarne 35 43 53 52 60 IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU Yvonne Elliman 36 41 42 46 52 NIGHT FEVER The Bee Gees 37 42 41 45 51 PICTURE THIS Blondie 38 11 9 9 14 FROM EAST TO WEST/ SCOT'S MACHINE Voyage 39 47 64 TOOK THE LAST TRAIN David Gates 40 46 65 DAVID WATTS The Jam 41 38 29 29 31 COPACABANA Barry Manilow 42 36 48 64 75 LIKE CLOCKWORK The Boomtown Rats 43 50 62 74 THE MAN WITH THE CHILD IN HIS EYES Kate Bush 44 44 52 58 65 CA PLANE POUR MOI Plastic Bertrand 45 45 54 62 67 MOVING OUT (ANTHONY'S SONG) Billy Joel 46 56 DAVY'S ON THE ROAD AGAIN Manfred Mann's Earthband 47 52 66 DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA Julie Covington 48 53 58 68 RAINING THROUGH MY SUNSHINE The Real Thing 49 61 SHA LA LA LA LEE Plastic Bertrand 50 DON'T FEAR THE REAPER Blue Oyster Cult 51 64 A LITTLE BIT OF SOAP Showaddywaddy 52 73 IDENTITY X-Ray Spex 53 37 15 31 49 BAKER STREET Gerry Rafferty 54 58 60 60 58 HOW CAN THIS BE LOVE Andrew Gold 55 DON'T BE CRUEL Elvis Presley 56 BECAUSE THE NIGHT Patti Smith Group 57 62 MISS YOU The Rolling Stones 58 63 72 AIN'T NOTHIN' GONNA KEEP US APART Terri De Sario 59 YOU MAKE ME FEEL (MIGHTY REAL) Sylvester 60 49 24 15 4 COME ON DANCE DANCE Saturday Night Band 61 NICE 'N' SLEAZY The Stranglers 62 69 ON A LITTLE STREET IN SINGAPORE Manhattan Transfer 63 70 TALKING IN YOUR SLEEP Crystal Gayle 64 54 40 30 25 IS THIS A LOVE THING Raydio (Ray Parker Junior) 65 STUFF LIKE THAT Quincy Jones 66 YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT (I'm so ashamed!) October 9, 201311 yr Author OCTOBER 1978 Those Summer Nights were drawing in, but for me the City ones ruled as Abba had their last week at the top to be pushed out by a classic ELO single from their most classic album Out Of The Blue, and what a great album it is. Disco, of course, doing well with the now-classic You Make Me Feel at 2 and the less-classic Donna Summer version of McCarthur Park (Richard Harris has yet to chart with his superior original Jimmy Webb classic) also at 2. Gerry Rafferty's criminally ignored follow-up to Baker Street was a big US hit, and The Beatles got Sgt Pepper a belated single release and a top 10 hit (here). The last two weeks of the month made up for the rather lacklustre start for fresh new entries, as loads of classics pop out of nowhere.... 3rd October chart SUMMER NIGHT CITY Abba 1 2 4 4 7 YOU MAKE ME FEEL (MIGHTY REAL) Sylvester 2 3 6 5 8 DREADLOCK HOLIDAY 10CC 3 5 7 10 13 LOVE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE Rose Royce 4 9 13 16 20 SUMMER NIGHTS John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John 5 4 11 8 11 GREASE Frankie Valli 6 8 12 20 24 RIGHT DOWN THE LINE Gerry Rafferty 7 7 5 12 18 KISS YOU ALL OVER Exile 8 20 27 36 53 OH WHAT A CIRCUS David Essex 9 15 20 27 36 EVE OF THE WAR Jeff Wayne (& Justin Hayward) 10 13 3 7 16 JILTED JOHN Jilted John 11 19 23 26 37 SGT. October 10, 201311 yr Author John, will you continue personal # 1 thread ? Hi Alex, yes, sorry it's been offline a bit, it takes a while to write an article and I dont get much spare time (except for the charts I do and comments on buzzjack, that's about it!) but I'm on holiday in a week and I will have my laptop and a week of lazing about in the sun - hooray! So I hope to do a batch then and move on into 1967! thanks for asking B-) cheers john
November 13, 201311 yr Author Had a request to make the charts more friendly to read, so trying it out, that means weekly charts with last week figs in brackets This week - a classic live metal oldie featuring Lemmie on vocals hits the top. It made my top 10 in 1972 but with nostlagia for the early 70's strong (I know how long ago 6 years seems when you're 20 - and recent when you're much much older!). Livvie is the highest new entry just ahead of my first trip to the pictures to see the movie - see how that affects the chart next week B-) On TV? Err actually I'm so sad I used to have TV charts back then too! This week's number one was Star Trek: Shore Leave, with Soap (fab sitcom written by creator of the Golden Girls) at 2 - Billy Crystal starred as one of the very first sympathetic gay characters on TV. 3 was Monty Python, 4 was Top Of The Pops 5 Dr Who 6 Going Straight (Porridge spin-off) 7 The Good Life 8 Multicoloured Swap Shop 8 Most Wanted and 10 It Aint Half Hot Mum. I was young! 20 year-olds like kids shows! That's my excuse anyway... 7th NOVEMBER 1978 1 ( 2 ) SILVER MACHINE Hawkwind 2 ( 1 ) SWEET TALKING WOMAN E.L.O. 3 ( 3 ) RAT TRAP The Boomtown Rats 4 ( 4 ) MCCARTHUR PARK Donna Summer 5 ( 10 ) SANDY John Travolta 6 ( 6 ) BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE The Jacksons 7 ( 9 ) PUBLIC IMAGE Public Image Limited 8 ( 11 ) SUMMER NIGHTS John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John 9 ( NEW ) HOPELESSLY DEVOTED TO YOU Olivia Newton-John 10 ( 5 ) RASPUTIN Boney M 11 ( 7 ) SUMMER NIGHT CITY Abba 12 ( 8 ) YOU MAKE ME FEEL (MIGHTY REAL) Sylvester 13 ( 15 ) EVER FALLEN IN LOVE SOMEONE (YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE) Buzzcocks 14 ( 17 ) YOU NEEDED ME Anne Murray 15 ( 13 ) DREADLOCK HOLIDAY 10CC 16 ( 25 ) DOWN IN THE TUBE STATION AT MIDNIGHT The Jam 17 ( 16 ) EVE OF THE WAR Jeff Wayne (& Justin Hayward) 18 ( 33 ) PART TIME LOVE Elton John 19 ( 28 ) HURRY UP HARRY Sham '69 20 ( 27 ) GIVING UP GIVING IN The Three Degrees 21 ( 12 ) MEXICAN GIRL Smokie 22 ( 22 ) TEENAGE KICKS The Undertones 23 ( 19 ) ONE FOR YOU ONE FOR ME Jonathan King 24 ( 14 ) NOW THAT WE'VE FOUND LOVE Third World 25 ( 47 ) PRETTY LITTLE ANGEL EYES Showaddywaddy 26 ( 18 ) RIGHT DOWN THE LINE Gerry Rafferty 27 ( 46 ) HOT CHILD IN THE CITY Nick Gilder 28 ( 20 ) LOVE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE Rose Royce 29 ( 30 ) RESPECTABLE The Rolling Stones 30 ( 38 ) FAT BOTTOMED GIRLS/ BICYCLE RACE Queen 31 ( 31 ) INSTANT REPLAY Dan Hartman 32 ( 24 ) GREASE Frankie Valli 33 ( 21 ) TALKING IN YOUR SLEEP Crystal Gayle 34 ( 23 ) LUCKY STARS Dean Friedman 35 ( 50 ) BRAVE NEW WORLD David Essex 36 ( 57 ) RADIO RADIO Elvis Costello & The Attractions 37 ( 52 ) YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John 38 ( 40 ) WHAT A NIGHT City Boy 39 ( 36 ) OH WHAT A CIRCUS David Essex 40 ( 37 ) JILTED JOHN Jilted John 41 ( 42 ) FOREVER AUTUMN Justin Hayward 42 ( 41 ) SUBSTITUTE Clout 43 ( 29 ) SGT. November 14, 201311 yr Author 14th Nov 1978 Fairly obviously saw Grease this week - a random jump back up for Summer Nights even though Rat Trap was the top single. November 14, 201311 yr Author 21st Nov 1978 2nd week at the top for the Rats, with Rod leaping and challenging at 2, pretty much as in the UK charts. Most punk/new wave doing better in my charts, and most novelty doing worse, and a few American hits that never charted here sprinkled about, notably Anne Murray 2 or 3 months before it finally became a UK hit. Another famous classic slipping in at the bottom, as it were, YMCA... TV? 1. Star Trek: The Man Trap (first episode ever broadcast in the USA) 2. November 14, 201311 yr Author 28th Nov 1978 A 3rd week at the top for the brilliant Rat Trap, beats the UK's run, and X-Ray Spex leap up to 3, Blondie 6 and glorious cheese of Dollar and Sarah Brightman just below. December 28, 201311 yr Author 5th DEC 1978 Rod Stewart gets his first chart-topper - a bit ironic given how many great singles he'd had between 1971 and 1974 - with a disco-riff famous wiggler. Kenny Everett immortalised it for Brits of a certain age. Boney M round off a mega-year with an instant christmas classic, a cover of the song that was the UK number one (for Harry Belafonte) when I was born, and whaddya know, it was back for my 21st in January. I like to think I'm special  The Bee Gees round off an even bigger year with a Top 10 hit. It's hard to get much bigger than the Bee Gees were in 1978, unless your name is "Beatles" or "Elvis" or "Jackson". There used to be a TV show I loved called Doctor Who, and someone did a disco version of the theme, in here into the 40. I wonder what happened to that show.... Chaka Khan enters after a gap of a few years (in my charts) or debuts (in the UK charts) with a bonfide disco classic. Well, funk disco really as opposed to eurodiscocheese, say, of Patrick Juvet. On TV lots of repeats and very little new stuff, apart from Soap and MASH, but a bit of Shakespeare in there just to counterpoint my love of one-liners (Groucho Marx and Woody Allen). December 28, 201311 yr Author 12th DEC 1978 In which a tarty disco dancer with a novelty Kenny Everett-sponsored sci-fi risque theme gets to the top. Hey it was catchy! Sarah Brightman would get another chart-topper in a very very different style one day...! ELO were huge in 1978, so it was great to see an EP of chart-flops and chrt-hits get a go at the chart. All of them were hits in the proper (John's) charts, as so they should have been especially the gorgeous Strange Magic and Can't Get It Out Of My Head. Hot Chocolate enter with a sweet ballad from a musical-that-never-was (I think, Dear Anyone), while sneaking in at 75, Mike Oldfield's sis Sally with a faaaabulous minor chart hit (UK). Not minor in mine.... December 28, 201311 yr Author 19th DEC 1978 I was packing up from student digs to head home to mansfield for Christmas TV deluge and prezzies. Buzzcocks get another Top 20, novelty YMCA goes Top 3 - you've probably never heard of it! - and Earth Wind & Fire just beat out Elton's lovely tribute to a young motorcycle courier who'd died in an accident, as highest new entry. Quo get to 12 with a forgotten record, Livvie goes Top 40 with her first post-Grease single, it was a bit moody and I liked it. The best (and forgotten) version of a christmas classic enters for The Eagles, Blockbuster movie Superman gets a single hit out of it, Paul Evans (who'd had an early 60's hit) has an unexpected chart comeback, and a classic enters for Father Abraham. Just kidding. Ian Dury, obviously! TV, new show with a loveable alien and manic stand-up new frontman Robin Williams (Mork And Mindy) entered with a bang. Williams was only ever as good as this first season in movies where he has free manic reign (usually animated films). 1 ( 1 ) I LOST MY HEART TO A STARSHIP TROOPER Sarah Brightman & Hot Gossip 2 ( 2 ) MARY'S BOY CHILD/ OH MY LORD Boney M 3 ( 9 ) Y.M.C.A.
