I say, "what I Liked at the time", but what I mean is "what I liked of those records in the Top 30 Singles chart" because in those days I didn't count it as an "official" hit record unless it was in the UK charts. So, often my favourite record wasn't in the chart at all, and these can be seen listed as "Bub" or Bubbling Under the week they were peaking first. This explains why there are lots of high entries and sudden inexplicable drop-outs - such as Chairmen Of The Board's 2 week run at number one and nothing else. Fairly obviously if Id opened up my charts to accept records outside the chart, that record would have been number one for four weeks and Lt Pigeon would have peaked at 2 - or would it? I also loved the 10CC and Albert Hammond bubbling under records, so they would have been in the upper reaches for sure..

hey ho, lots of classics here anyway! Little know fact: Geordie had a singer called Brian Johnson. Yes, AC/DC, him.

John, It wasn't the best idea, but you can update these charts now in 2013. :)

All UK singles charts are available on UKMix forum in one thread. (My main source for retro charts)

For simple:

Top 50 for every week in 1973 : http://www.ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?...d&start=275

Most my favourites weren't in UK top 30 in that period of time, so I like only Lynsey De Paul's song.

Maybe she is # 1 my favourite singer from 70s, even better, than wonderful Dana and beautiful Mary Hopkin.

Elton, Elvis, Michael and Osmonds were OK.

Thanks Alex, thats a fabulous site, Ive bookmarked it as a favourite!

I sort of revisit old music charts by doing a year end Top 100 or 200 and comparing what I like now with what I liked at the time. I will probably run the two for 1973 at the end of the year just to compare... Yes it's sad though, as Middle Of The Road got robbed of a certain number one in my chart because it didn't make the singles charts!:)

I was a big fan of Lynsey and Mary, Lynsey especially as she was also a good songwriter:)

cheers

"Take Me Home The Country Roads" was my # 1.

Glam rock is so far from my music taste. :)

I will try to find some my favourites from non-UK charts (mostly from Netherlands and Ireland)

Middle Of The Road - Kailakee Kailako (August 1973)

Charts: Netherlands # 21, Switzerland # 5. Belgium # 26

http://www.dingsme.info/avatar8.jpgDO YOU WANNA TOUCH ME (OH YEAH) Gary Glitter 3

Once upon a time Gary Glitter was beloved of kids, made popular pop songs and he sold a couple of million records in 1973, these are facts...

These charts are what I liked at the time, so even though I didnt buy his records I sometimes liked the singles - no point trying to rewrite history and leave a blank in my charts, even if radio carefully picks charts that don't have Gary Glitter in them nowadays and he's a complete a*se.

cheers!

Thanks, yes, I seriously considered it after your suggestion, and I perfectly understand Glitter is a hate figure, and everyone would prefer not be reminded of him and apologies for that, but where does one draw the line? Pretend KLF's Doctorin The Tardis never happened? (Glitter song) Erase all Jonathan King songs from the charts too, and anything he produced? All Phil Spector records, classics and all, because he's a convicted cold-blooded killer? Michael jackson records because he was taken to court arrested by police and settled out of court before a verdict could be reached and which he obviously felt he would lose? Jerry Lee Lewis because he married a 14 year old? The Who because Townsend was "researching" kiddie porn sites? How about violence against women is that not a good enough reason to not list Chris Brown records? What if, for example, a member of whatever is someone's current favourite pop group turns out to be a paedophile in 20 years, does one try and rewrite history, deny they ever liked them and forget they ever sold records?

All it is, is a list of songs I liked as a child, in the order I liked them and wrote them down, not what I like now, and certainly in no way condones or supports anything that anyone in any of the charts has done or may yet do. And I still am happy to say Glitter got what he deserved, if anything he got off lightly...!

thanks for the suggestion though, appreciate it would probably be a very popular solution!

Some music from Netherlands charts:

My second favourite country in pop music after United Kingdom.

February 1973 :

Theo & Marjan - Hela Kom Met Me Mee Ja! (Netherlands # 17)

Middle Of The Road - Yellow Boomerang (Netherlands # 1)

Fourth # 1 for Middle Of The Road in Netherlands. They were very successful here.

Previous #1s were : Soley Soley, Sacramento, The Talk Of All The U.S.A. "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" was only on the second place.

Thanks for your comments alex, and the video links. Ive always been partial to Dutch pop too, though i dont know that Theo & Marjan record, it's pleasantly oom pah pah singalong, and ive been in Dutch pubs and that's exactly the sort of record Ive heard in them:)

Yellow Boomerang I got to know when I bought Middle Of The Road hits cd, but didnt know it at the time, which is a shame!

MARCH 1973 CHARTS:

a bit of glam a bit of soul a bit of MOR a bit of rock a bit of country, old-timers & new-timers, old songs & new songs.

The odd chart drop-outs, again, due them dropping prematurely out of the Top 30, otherwise they would have hung about weeks in the upper reaches. Note Geordie at 5 - who? that'll be Brian Johnson of AC/DC then in his glamrock days. Never talks about it, funnily...:)

"Pinball Wizard" is only one single by New Seekers, which I don't like.

Cliff's Eurovision song was good, but Ireland is my huge favourite in this year (Maxi - Do I Dream ?).

RTE had a wish to change "Do I Dream" lyrics, but Maxi's manager didn't it.

RTE sent Tina Reynolds, but she didn't have accreditation and couldn't be ESC participant.

Maxi was very nervous and her perfomance wasn't well.

Thanks Alex, The New Seekers wasnt their best single though Peter Doyle gave a good go at the vocals, and quite an odd single choice really. I still think Cliff's single is under-rated, it's fun, and I dont remember the Ireland entry at all, will have to check it out:)

MAY 1973 and The Sweet managed to briefly interrupt my Roy Wood adoration. Posters on the wall, the lot. That said, Middle Of The Road were excluded by chart rules (they didnt make the UK top 30) but had I allowed non-Top 30 records in the chart it's a safe bet that they would grabbed at least one week at the top as I was mad on it for a few weeks playing it over and over on my reel-to-reel tape recorder...
