My chart don't know anything about glam music, so...

Best song from the last part and my # 1 : Lynsey De Paul - All Night (You like her and I know it)

"Walking In The Rain" was a minor hit. The Partridge Family is really intresting project.

Near future : Peters And Lee # 1 hit "Welcome Home"

Dutch news :

Non-typical song from the future Eurovision stars Mouth & MacNeal with "Battering Ram" (Peak : # 19)

Some Eurovision songs were in this chart (include Cliff Richard's hit with 4 weeks at # 1).

My favourite Dutch pop singer Bonnie St. Claire and her top 5 work with group Unit Gloria.

Cindy & Bert (German duet, ESC participant in 1974) - Immer wieder sonntags (Peak : # 8)

R.I.P. Bert.

In the end ("Special present" from my favourite Youtube channel Avro TOPPOP)

Chi Coltrane - You Were My Friend (Peak position : # 12)

Thanks Alex,

That Lynsey track is a goodie (I have the album, of course, along with a few Partridge Family albums:)

Peters & Lee was a bit mums & dads music for me at the time, but as I got older I got to like it more and more. I love singing along to it now:)

thanks for the links, Mouth & Macneal had a few singles that charted in mine, and they have one in a current advert from 1972...

Chi Coltrane I don't know but I like the look/sound of from your clip, will have to check her out!

cheers

JUNE 1973

Summer was here (yes in those days we had summers), and I was a teenager on an RAF camp. Glam and soul, pop and rock, in that order. Roy Wood was my hero (obviously) closely followed by Chinn-chap productions and Bowie productions. Astounding from this viewpoint is that I dint love Stealers Wheel, Edgar Winter and Wings for the classics that they so obviously are. All would now be instant number ones if re-issued hits.

JULY 1973

It was hot weather, school was out, and I was stuck (albeit pleasantly) in the Lincolnshire countryside at RAF Swinderby. I was still latching my charts to the UK singles chart, but not for much longer as it was getting limiting as favourites were forced to drop out (see Wizzard's whole run at 1, virtually, then out) and favourites weren't getting in (Todd Rundgren). In fact the whole month should have had Mud at number one, as I'd already spent my pocket money on it before it made the Top 30. I loved the tango rock even more than Crazy, and Mud were going to be big - after this single!

Sultry classic soul from sexy Sylvia and Barry White made groaning a trend, rock old and new, glam rock, and oldies from the 50's (Goons), 60's (Al Martino) and 70's (perennial re-entry Free) dotted around too...

Good evening, John

Didn't heard that The Pearls single, but previous three were my # 1s : "Third Finger Left Hand", "You Came, You Saw, You Conquered", "You Are Everything".

Carpenters single was on the top in this time period for me.

Will I see "Ring Ring" in this thread ?

Thanks Alex,

Yes the first two Pearls singles would have gone Top 10 in my chart easily if non-UK-top 30 tracks had been allowed in, You Are Everything would also have charted lower along with Yo Yo. There are more tracks that actually DID chart in mine from them in 1974 to come (The Wizard Of Love, a song supposed to be about Roy Wood) and Guilty, among others. The Carpenters nearly got to my number one in August....

Ring Ring I didnt get to hear until July 1974 so it charts then.... B-)

AUGUST 1973

School summer holidays, it was hot, the charts were getting a bit MOR for me, and full of the wrong kind of oldies - as can be seen from the BUB (Bubbling unders) tracks that failed to make the UK Top 30 were often much better than those that did (No Donny Osmond at Number One in my chart! No Donny Osmond at all, in fact!) My favourite record of the time had it's entire run at Number One because it wasn't eligible before it made the Top 30, and it dropped out before it deserved to (Mud, with Chinn-Chapman's other biggie at 2 for Suzi Quatro). Ditto Angel Fingers, Wizzard were my heroes of the year, and would have entered much earlier as it was getting Radio One airplay weeks ahead of release (unusual in those days). Anyway, it's the last month my chart would be limited to a Top 20 based on the UK Top 30 - and about time too!

SEPTEMBER 1973

It was all-change in september 1973, I was 15 and the charts were too limiting for what I liked. The last UK charts-based Top 20 was the 1st, then I stopped, feeling I ought to grow up as we moved from RAF Swinderby in Lincolnshire to RAF Innsworth in Gloucester, a new school yet again, the new boy yet again, and my new school was quite strict on uniform and sports. No football, just Rugby, and most definitely no long hair - as I got told as soon as I started by the teachers. Mine was shoulder-length.

In tandem the music scene exploded with excitement, loads of hot new records from hot acts, and many of my faves were now not charting in the singles rush. Glam, rock and soul were the new pop. I couldn't last - by the 23rd I'd done another chart - my first Top 30 of the new era, the others filled in the gaps after the event. There is an inrush of new stuff, and many of them remain obscure. The Sweet, ELO, Ike & Tina, Elton, Jackson 5, Manfred Mann & Wizzard were my faves this month. Manfred, Ike & Tina & Jackson 5 had synths, and I was loving those futuristic sounds!

OCTOBER 1973

Firmly in my new school, Chosenhill Comprehensive, I was surprised to find there was a bit of a northern soul and glam and rock scene going on there. Suited me perfectly really, though in evidence here is a bit of 60's nostalgia of sorts (I'd been a music fan for 10 years already and it was like dipping way back in time from the rather advanced age of 15): Dylan times 2, Ike & Tina, Manfred Mann, Hollies, Paul Simon, Isleys, Four Tops, Tempts & various ex-Beatles. The forgotten Beatle had the last laugh this month though, with a bit of help from George the fabulous Photograph put Ringo on top and interrupted all those rock/soul tracks with synthesisers that really were exciting me, the new sound of electronic music really did appeal to me. I fondly recall John Peel reviewing Ike & Tina commenting in Sounds (pop paper) it was a great rock track (as indeed it was a classic!) despite being interrupted by some farty synthesisers. What!?! I loved those farty synths. Not to worry he changed his tune in the 80's, by which time Punk had made him see the error of his smart-arse hippie ways and appreciate (good) pop.

NOVEMBER 1973

OK, I was adjusting to my new school in Churchdown, trying to make friends and be less of a loner - a bit daunting as everyone had over 4 years together in most cases and the syllabus was all new to me. There were a few kids I liked like Stephen 'Barney' Robson (we swapped 45's) who got me first ever nickname (and last, thank god: "Fiddle". Don't ask why...!)

The country, however, was about to get very dark. Quite literally, as power cuts, days off school, and no television after 10pm bit hard. The TV was the hard one. 9 months later there was a baby boom, for some reason I couldnt quite explain...

The more grim it got (and life otherwise was perfectly fine for me) the more Glam Rock seemed tailor-made for cheering everyone up. It did, big time, and it pretty much peaked for the next 3 months before suddenly dying out overnight, virtually. For me, it was all about Mud (and other Chinn-Chapman acts) and Roy Wood/Wizzard, but I also preferred now-forgotten acts like Barry Blue to the one he ripped off royally, Gary Glitter, with Do You Wanna Dance. Other than that, there were 3 ex-Beatles, a sprinkling of soul minor classics (like the gorgeous Don Downing track) and some non-hits like String Driven Thing, a song later murdered by the Bay City Rollers (but at least it became a hit at last). Dan The Banjo man had already charted with previous instrumentals I Will Return (as Springwater, one of the best obscure guitar instrumentals) and Groovin' With Mr Bloe, so he didnt mind (I hope) missing out this time. Little-known act Michael Jackson charted with me (but not the UK) with his brothers, while the first of a new breed suddenly appeared at 5, just ahead of his own Beach Boys tribute record at 6. Band: Wizzard. Song: a modern-sounding christmas pop song, cheering up Xmas no end. You've probably never heard of it, though. I popped out to HMV Gloucester to buy the fold-out gatefold sleeve edition with Roy as Santa on a sleigh. Fab! I wonder if there's any chance I might finally get to hear it on the radio this christmas for it's 40th birthday?

John, many wonderful songs were charted in some last monthes (include my favourite New Seekers song "You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me") and another their # 1 (We've Got To Do It Now) "Won't Somebody Dance With Me" (and the most Lynsey De Paul singles) was my personal weekly #1 and spent 5 weeks on the top position.

"Amoureuse" was first Kiki Dee # 1 hit in my chart, 3 years before her great duet with Elton John.

"Paper Roses" is only one solo Mary Osmond's # 1, but she had 4 additional with her brother Donny some years after it.

Well it could be better to understand if these figures are shown in the form of charts and graphs.

Hi Kundra, yes you're prob right - thinking about it, buzzjack paste pdf's of spreadsheets so that must be possible! I'll see if I can make it clearer if I can work out how to do it. It's basically chart positions for the whole month so it would just need dates above columns I expect B-)

cheers!

1st DEC 1973

Yes, I was 15 and my hero had the top 2, solo at 2 and Wizzard's 3rd number one of the year, I bought both singles the day my brother bought the Slade single. The xmas one's seem to have passed the test of time (and Forever should have, shame it's been forgotten)...

I was doing my best still to avoid rugby at school, going on the bus to Gloucester leisure centre to go swimming instead, me and a couple of (other) geeks - I really don't know how I blagged it to this day, they must have looked at me and thought, he won't be much good in a scrum. Oddly enough, a bunch of fit lads bent over in front of me was something I tried to avoid.

Roxy Music were cool, Bryan Ferry was cool, Streetlife was fab, and it was rising in tandem with cool bowie-promoted Mott The Hoople, I still associate them together, I still think they are exciting rockpop records. Catch the Thunderthighs girls on the video for Roll Away The Stone!

T.Rex were about to burn out, this was the last of the pop metal T.Rex singles, another late great John Lennon up to 10 with the very under-rated Mind Games, Elton does a xmas single that still gets airplay (despite being his minor hit of the year), and of course they collaborated on singles in 1974 before Lennon had his final ever live appearance at an Elton John concert.

I rediscovered a passion for comics about this time - DC Comics was having a new look to it's Superman/Batman family titles, I was most excited by Legion Of Super Heroes on the covers (about time) of Superboy's comic. Epic.

I digress, a second week for Wizzard, Slade at 3 and The Beach Boys 60's classic making it a very happy jolly-sounding musical xmas, despite the power-cuts, early nights and reduced TV. At least Top Of The Pops and Morecambe & Wise kept us going! And the Star Trek repeats. Ones I hadnt seen for 4 years were back on TV, also epic.

In at 12, glamrock faves Geordie (a flop single everywhere). Check out AC/DC's Brian Johnson on this. I'm going to cause gasps now (and disbelief) by saying I'll take this over anything he did in AC/DC anyday. Great fun. New at 16 a debut hit for Leo Sayer, dressed as a clown, and much media attention as cool songwriter (for Roger Daltrey and others). Hard to believe he did what they used to call "a Gilbert" and opted for MOR pop instead of singer-songwriter 3 years later. At 24, a major soulfunk classic, probably my fave Stevie Wonder record, the conscience-touching ghetto tale. Fab.

In which Roy Wood knocks himself off the top. That was a chartfirst! The backing musicians in the TOTP clip are Wizzard, though the single is 100% Roy on all instruments and voices, which impressed me hugely in those days. The record is a 1960's Neil Sedaka pastiche, affectionate and catchy, and appropriate as Neil was in the UK making great adult music at 10CC's studio, one song of which is lower down and covered by the great Andy Williams.

New entries from Harold Melvin (or rather the late Teddy Pendergrass) with a great Philly soul song that was clubbed-up in the 90's to lesser effect. Marmalade sneak in with a forgotten flop, keeping my 60's nostalgia bubbling as it started to seem a long time ago as I neared sweet 16. In at 29, a band formerly faves of mine under a different guise (Jonathan King protegees basically), who, now having had an overhaul came back with a catchy pop ditto I liked. I say liked. By the time it became a hit, months later, the Rollers were on the road to becoming huge pop machine monsters of inane drivel (once they ditched their professional songwriters and tried to write their own). Finally, up to 3, Northern Soul classic B side hits it big: Wigan was the place to be for hipster raving back in 1974 (true!) and loads of old 60's soul records became hits on the back of it, such as Love On A Mountain Top. Originally hidden-away on the b side of Everlasting Love (the original, but not the best, version of a classic song), the soaring melody and rhythm was great for back-flips. So I hear.

22nd DEC 1973

It's Chriiiistmas! We went round to neighbour friends of my parents for xmas day dinner (Jimmy and Vera) and watched Xmas Top Of The Pops. Fab. Don't recall what I got for xmas, but it was likely to have been vinyl albums, Arcade and KTel hits compilations.

2nd week at the top for Roy Wood, and drum rocker Cozy Powell goes up to 3 with the instrumental stomper we used to play on the school desks. Works pretty well, I suggest you try it! Stevie Wonder gets his 4th Top 10 hit of the year, and the Bay City Rollers make the Top 10 for the first time in 2 years. Jonathan King gets yet another hit under a fake name, covering the Stones to amusing effect. Melanie, meanwhile returns with a Shirelles cover. Both King and Melanie had hit number one in 1972. Sneaking in at the bottom, Dexter Redding - who?! - he was the teen son of the late great Otis having a go at the teen pop market, and failing, but I rather liked this sweet track.
