Sorted. :D

I love the huge discussion that comes when Gareth Gates is mentioned.

Great thread guys, just please try not to turn it into an arguement.... ;)

Well I did quite like him too.

I thought his 2nd album was better than his first in all honesty. There were quite a few songs on Go Your Own Way that easily could have been singles. -_-

I preferred the singles off the second album too. :D

You shouldn't feel embarrassed to like him Kelly. He's well worth it :D

Although I loved the first album, I do agree with you, there were lots of songs on Go your Own Way that in my opinion should have been released as singles. I'm really hoping for even more progression on this next album. The fact the best tracks on the last one were written by Gareth, and that he has written or co-written, almost all of this one, and is doing his own accompaniments on piano, guitar and drums, on many of them, bodes very well I think.

Think there was a little bit of `hiding his light under a bushel' in the first couple of years ;)

Well I think all artists that have appeared on reality TV start off with a kind of middle of the road album.

Shayne Ward's album is bland as white paint. As was Michelle McManus', Darius, Will, Girls Aloud, Liberty X, Kelly Clarkson etc.

But the albums that followed from the above artists were a lot more experimental about finding their sound. It worked really well for some of them, but not for others.

Gareth has been away quite a while though, as has Darius, but there's been various bits of news on him, but it seems like nothing has been mentioned about Gareth?

I thought Will's, Darius's and Liberty X's first albums were pretty good actually.

They were pretty good but quite bland in retrospect when you listen to Live Twice, Friday's Child or X.

19 seem to be absolutely obsessed with keeping quiet about him as much as possible. I'm sure there's a logic to it all in there, but as fans, it makes for difficult waiting. It's probably added to the wait, but Gareth's involvement with The McGuire Programme gives us some insight to what's happening, even though that too seems to be under some kind of media black-out! However, you can read Gareth's report on the course he led last weekend on their website. http://www.stammering.ie/wordpress/

Gareth's second album was very well received by those who bothered to listen to it, and it's a massive shame that BMG gave up trying to promote it so soon. Apparently Gareth was promised that he'd get to release All Cried Out after Say It Isn't So, but obviously that wasn't to be. I'd have liked Absolutely or Foolish to be a single, but you can't even get the latter on iTunes.

How GG fans stay so loyal to a guy that has strung them along for 3years with hardly a word - except the odd 'I'm fine and I'm working on a new album' type comment, I'll never understand. Still, big up to them for sticking it out I suppose.

I think we do pretty well from him compared with a number of other artists I like. Some of my other favourites say nothing for years! Getting reports about his work with the McGuire programme, whilst not directly aimed at us, is also fabulous and inspiring, and keeps us going.

He has also been pretty great when fans have bumped into him, at airports, up in Glasgow etc etc. But then he has always been amazing with his fans on a face to face basis, even when completley knackered or in a hurry.

Nosey,

Those are exactly the same tracks I thought were crying out to be singles and instead we got Say It Isn't So, a pretty ballad.

Tell me please, was All Cried Out released in South Africa or was it in a chart there that features album tracks? I've seen the same with D's Dive In which was never issued anywhere as a single.

Edited by Baytree

Baytree in South Africa they dont actually release physical singles, just for radio to promote the album, and I believe All cried out made top 5.

I also would have loved to see that as a single.

Regarding why we are still fans? What a silly question, we love Gareth voice, his personality and everything about him. And we will wait however long it takes. And he is brilliant with his fans, and gives plenty of his time. He is a person who can always being approached and he will always be nice to you, unlike some other pop stars.

Also when we had the chance to meet him at the football (where he scored a goal  ), he had time for all the 80 plus fans who come to the dinner (short 4 days notice), and missed the second half, because he would not leave before he seen everyone. :D

It seems it is all part of the plan to keep him out of the limelight.

Imagine how it must feel being a fan :( BUT we are having to put our faith in Simon Fuller. He has taken Gareth under his wing and is prepared to nurture him and bring him back, when he feels the time is right.

Hurry up 'the time is right' :P.

I loved Gareth's report of the McGuire course he did he's so caring and his sense of humour and dedication shine through he's amazing :D :cheer:

Joe Mott's article is in his usual style, I guess, but I hope the news part of it is true and that there'll be a new release from Gareth in December or January. I'm very very curious about what he will come up with. :D

But as it's been asked, and it's one of the countries where we have rough figures - Gareth sold over 200k in Taiwan. It might seem small-fry compared to what can be sold in the UK, but on his last visit, he was told he was the most successful Western artist they'd ever had. It was in a local equivalent of the Financial Times that BMG Taiwan turned their fortunes around from being in the red, to having their most profitable year eve - and they attributed that to Gareth's album. BMG UK probably only saw a fraction of that money, because it's 19 who hold the licence to the music.

200k in Taiwan - if that's just his second album, then that's great! Still good if it's a combined figure. He will have made more money in royalties per album sold, from his second album as he co-wrote 7 songs. That would mean being able to invest that money into creating new music. Money is not just important to record companies! The more money you have, the more you can do your own thing, I'm sure, although the only way you're ever going to have complete artistic freedom is, if you release your stuff on your own record company and are loaded enough to not have to care about profits.

Btw, is Taiwan the biggest share of the music market in SE Asia?

I can't be sure, but it's one of the bigger markets out there. I know South Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia are quite substantial too, whereas Singapore is one of the smallest territories.

I can't deny that it was satisfying to see Gareth rack up the number ones in countries he'd yet to visit, especially after all the abuse we got because someone dared to give Gareth a record contract after we all supposedly voted for him out of sympathy. However, the best thing about his international travels was that the media over there had less preconceptions about what his image was, so some of his photoshoots have him looking really different. I also loved that starting from scratch, he did small scale showcases and acoustic sets for the radio stations. He spent less time there than the UK, but the quality of the promotion was much higher. The same applies for Gareth's visits to Germany and Spain and around Europe. I hope that this time round Gareth's UK fans get the same consideration.

Tut Tut. I thought you didn't post to provoke arguements.

I don't dispute GG was successful in a lot of Asian countries (relative to their markets anyway) but it must be remembered this was quite a few years ago. I just hope for his sake that his fanbase isn't as fickle as they are in the uk. It can't be denied that his star had well & truly waned before he took his break.

It's a tall order for any artist to stick around, but Gareth since coming to fame has now spent a lot more time out of the spotlight than in it, without being firmly established. Having said that it's often said that your only as good as your last record so maybe if he can comeback with that really knockout single his career may flourish.

Edited by truly talented

Doesn't sound provocative to me.

Any artist's fans would be pleased to see him hitting number 1 on the strength of his music in a region where he has not been previously known and that would be a double pleasure if that artist's talent had previously been questioned by a large number of people who expressed the opinion that he got where he was purely because his was a good sob story, Already there are some who are badmouthing Johnathon from the new X Factor series and saying he will win because of his story. The fact that he's a good singer is getting swamped.
