I watched the program last week which was looking back at the history of Light Entertainment, I think. Can't remember what the program was called now, but I found it very interesting to hear Simon Cowell talking about the fact there is so much emphasis put on `manufactured' artists these days. He went on to say that all artists to a certain degree are `manufactured'. Even `Take That' were manufactured apparently. I believe he said there had to be one cheeky one, a couple of dancers, someone to write the music etc. He did go on to name a few others artists which I was quite surprised at, but I can't remember who they were now.

Perhaps someone else watched and can recall a bit more than I can

I watched it & your right every artist is 'manufactured' to a certain extent to fit an image, even supposedly cool acts have to compromise. Gary Barlow was seen as the serious singer/songwriter but he needed the other elements that you mentioned in the band & they were branded to appeal to a certain market. Louis Walsh saw their success & wanted a piece of the action & so Boyzone were born.

Some acts do manage to take more control of their careers than others & this becomes easier the more successful they are & the longer they stick around. It doesn't come over night but takes musical integrity, self belief, sheer bloody mindedness & of course if they are to stay the course,TALENT. The music really does have to come first.

The programme was called A History of Light Entertainment. I recorded it as I was watching "Maria" at the time. And yes, lots of groups and bands are and were manufactured - Boyzone, Take That, Spice Girls etc etc. If someone has an idea to form a group and wants some more people they audition them. If that is what you call manufacturing so be it. However the only actual bands (groups) who were manufactured specifically for a television show were the Monkees and S Club 7.

And a very large helping of luck generally.

edits. Ooh. I've just found the fan report of the meeting with Gareth in Galway. How lovely for her. Damned lovely photo too.

Know what you mean  . I have to keep going back to have another look at that gorgeous hunk of manhood. Its such a lovely read too. I've lost count how many times I've read it now. I can't think there would be many artists who would take the time to be so obliging to a fan after the day Gareth obviously had that day. He's a true star. Most would have slunk off to their taxi without making an appearance at all I would think.

If he really wants to highlight the plight of fellow stammerers then let him put that documentary out NOW, when he's got nothing to promote, rather than waiting until his album comes out.

Surely, whenever an artist is promoting, their management/record label will come up with a story/invent a relationship, be it girlfriend or boyfriend etc to gain tabloid interest. When artists are not promoting they seem more than happy to live their lives out of the spotlight, but as soon as an album needs some introduction it is then that we hear of those absurd situations or comical outfits, purely to raise their profile.

Getting away from whatever the documentary contains it would be pointless for Gareth to release it now, having been kept under wraps by Simon Fuller and 19 for the past couple of years. We haven't been allowed to see him during that time, so to release any documentary and then put him back under wraps doesn't make sense.

We know that Gareth spent a fair amount of time working with Ricky Ross, formely of Deacon Blue, who also formerly worked with Graham Kearns, formerly of Wet, Wet, Wet. Graham also attends the McGuire programme and so Gareth and Graham know each other quite well. I can't help but wonder if that had any bearing on that collaboration?

I've just had it pointed out to me that I got a bit confused here. Graham Duffin was the guitarist from Wet, Wet, Wet who previously worked with Ricky and is on the McGuire programme. Graham Kearns is Gareth's regular guitarist who he's been all around the world with, but also written a few songs with. Too many Grahams, lol.

As I've just learnt how to do this, it's the perfect opportunity to post my favourite video of Gareth singing with Graham, and it's the first song they wrote together too.

Or maybe not, it's just a white square now.

Here you go, never let it be said that Will fan's aren't helpful
.

Thanks Suggy, you seem like a nice Will fan.

Love the reaction of the audience on that clip.

Yes thanks Suggy. Have to agree with Dindy. I've always found Suggy very friendly :D

Perhaps once Gareth is back, some of us will be more used to this new technology which seems to have sprung up in the last couple of years.

Not me I hasten to add

I am really looking forward to Gareth's return to the music scene, I hope we don't have too much longer to wait . I have every confidence that Gareth will have taken time out to produce an excellent album , especially as he is playing his drums and guitar (I heard that from more a credible source than Joe Mott ). We know that Gareth has been helping fellow stammers and instructed his own course, which is great, but I think the documentary will be very interesting , and not just about how he has overcome his stammer . :D

How come we are having to rely on Joe Blooming Mott?

Love ya really Joe :P

Wehey for the more credible source. Can't you nudge the source along a bit :P ?

All Will's fans are nice, they're just the same as every other artists fans. :)

Well. Who'd have thought peace would have broken out in this thread. I hope Gareth can come back bigger than ever but it's going to be tough. He needs to have a wicked album and, although his marketing can't be worse than it was when he left the scene, because in my opinion they got the promotion, what there was of it, completely wrong, they are going to have to be very ingenious this time around if he's going to have the opportunity to show his talents both as a musician and songwriter. He's got a great voice and a great look to go with it. It'll be a shame if he doesn't get another chance.

I think that's probably why all concerned are being so very tight-lipped about everything at the moment. The determination not to let anyone know any definite plans until they are ready to start promoting is quite obvious. I don't think there is any question that he won't get another chance though.

And yes, I know I'm biased  but I don't think there is any chance he won't be successful either

Oh, yes please.
