September 17, 200618 yr How involved is he now? Didn't the sale of 19 entertainment leave him with a seat on the board? I would have thought that 19 records and 19 management would have beenincluded in the sale. Does anyone know?
September 17, 200618 yr I don't know but my impression was always that 19 Management and Brilliant19 were not part of the sale. I'm sure it was discussed at length on some of the industry boards but I don't think it's worth trawling to find out for sure. I'm not sure if they have archives that are freely available. If Darius comes over in November maybe he could shed some light on it, if anyone is curious enough to want to know the answer and has the presence of mind to ask such a question during their limited time with him. It won't be me!
September 17, 200618 yr Author Apologies for the length of this - 19 Entertainment, based in the United Kingdom, is a leading creator and producer of entertainment properties, including American Idol in the United States, Pop Idol in the United Kingdom, as well as versions of the Idol series in more than seventy countries around the world and the United States television show So You Think You Can Dance. The company was founded in 1985 by Simon Fuller, and has since created 106 number one singles, 83 number one albums in the UK, 281 Top 40 albums, and 430 Top 40 singles. The company has recording contracts with and/or manages or has managed former American Idol and Pop Idol participants, such as Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice, Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, and Fantasia Barrino as well as other pop artists, including the Spice Girls, Annie Lennox and S Club 7. The company has also entered into an exclusive global joint venture with David and Victoria Beckham. As well as pop acts, 19 represents many songwriters and producers including Cathy Dennis, Steelworks, Simon Ellis, and Absolute. Traditionally an artist management company, in recent years 19 has diversified, (as shown in the group name change from 19 Management to 19 Entertainment) to become a group of over 20 companies and has some of the entertainment industry's top creative personnel including: 19 Television formed in 1997. Headed by Nigel Lythgoe, former Head of Comedy and Entertainment at LWT alongside Mal Young, 19 TV's head of Drama. Mal previously held the position of Head of Drama at the BBC. 19 TV produces or co-produces some Idol television shows, So You Think You Can Dance and All American Girl in the U.S., as well as television projects for 19 artists. S Club 7 series (1999-2003), and its spin-off film Seeing Double (2003) Spiceworld film (1998) - starring the Spice Girls Pop Idol (2001), American Idol (2002-present) and the Idol series, and its spin-off film, From Justin to Kelly (2003) I Dream - children's talent programme for the BBC, featuring former cast members of S Club 8 (2004) So You Think You Can Dance (2005-present) 19 Management - still an important part of the group, headed by 19 Creative Director and Pop Idol judge Nicki Chapman, has handled the management of some of music's top artists for over two decades 19 Merchandising - co-ordinates merchandising deals for 19 artists and brands with many of the worlds top companies 19 Recordings - Independent record company alongside music rights companies 19 Music and 19 Songs 19 Brands - Utilises the various 19 Brands 19 Touring - handling touring arrangements for some of the world's top performers 19 International Sports Management Alongside the core 19 group are several partnership companies including Native Management, TLS Management, Ambush Music, Shy Records, Beckham Brand and Brilliant 19. In March 2005, 19 Entertainment founder Simon Fuller sold the group to Robert Sillerman's CKX, Inc. in a cash and stock deal worth £100 million ($192 million). Fuller has remained in his role as President of 19 and has become a director of CKX. 19 has recently been expanding more into sport and in August 2006 began handling commercial opportunities for the England national football team (through subsidiary 1966 Entertainment) in a four year deal. From the 2007 Formula One season onwards, 19 will partner with the Honda F1 racing team. The new long term creative partnership will focus on the development of the Honda Racing F1 Team as a sports and entertainment brand across the world. On 5th September 2006 19 Entertainment's founder Simon Fuller and French born fashion designer Roland Mouret announced a joint partmership, under the banner 19 RM. The partnership will merge the entereneurial skills of Fuller and the marketing skills of 19 alongside the design skills of Mouret, an internationally renowned designer. There is a list of past and current artistes under the banner but strange no Darius although technically he is under brilliant 19, is that a good thing.
September 17, 200618 yr Author I dont understand why Darius chose to be managed by other than the main company. Two good things in that report Nigel lythgoe as head of 19 tv who has recently praised Darius in the press and cathy dennis one of the most successful songwriters in pop although pop is out now and herself formerly a popsinger. However why does Darius seem to come bottom of the pile when he is so much more talented than others mentioned especially in the songwriter sphere.
September 17, 200618 yr I'm guessing but I think there's probably no way Simon Fuller could have continued to manage Darius if Darius had been released from the joint deal with Simon Cowell and BMG/Sony by Simon Fuller within the main 19 management group. I think 19 would have been seriously in breach of the contract whereas if Darius was released from the contract with both parties who agreed to his release, then Darius was free of all obligation and able to choose any management team he wanted. He thought Simon Fuller was the best and went with a company in which SF was a partner and as a free agent, Darius agreed to the joint stewardship of Nick Godwyn and Simon Fuller. Brilliant19 is not part of the main 19 Entertainment group per se and probably would not have been included in the sale. It may have worked against him on many occasions and I know I have often said exactly that. I do not know the exact terms of D's contract. He had a very astute experienced music lawyer so it may not be just standard but rather a customised one. I also have no way of telling whether he would have fared better with another management team. I always respected Nick but it appeared to me that SF as joint manager, took the reins out of NG's hands when it suited him. I didn't like some coincidences in the past like for example Darius succeeding in India and awakening interest from Bollywood and then while he's away doing some charity work in Lapland, accompanying children with terminal illnesses who wanted to meet Santa, Emma Bunton suddenly gets the opportunity for a TV documentary about swopping places with a Bollywood actress and a small part in one of their films.
September 17, 200618 yr Just noticed this is Gareth's thread. Pretty In Pink would it be possible to split this topic and put the more general discussion on to another thread?
September 17, 200618 yr Goodness. Looks like Darius and Gareth may be even further back in SF's queue than I'd imagined - Rachel Stevens is doing I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. I guess her lead single will come out about a month after she wins/is cut from the show.
September 17, 200618 yr Author I too agree with what you say baytree and I find it more obvious in the fact that amy winehouse is under brilliant 19 and I think still with mercuryand I believe her last album did not do well. However suddenly today we have a review by Ian hyland in the NOTW of a concert she has done nd a new album since 2003- quote she deserves to be all over the radio, plastic popstars, amy winehouse is on the loose, you have been warned and there is quite a bit more.
September 17, 200618 yr Ah well, so that's it. Aw he's just being a gentleman - ladies before gents! Is Amy with Mercury? It seems strange that both she and Lucie Silvas have new albums coming out so close then. We've heard virtually nothing about Amy since the last single. That's what normally happens when creative people start seriously working on their albums. It doesn't mean they've disappeared off the face of the earth or are considered 'pop' failures as some people on here are wont to assert. We know that D's album is not ready for release. Although we think the wait is interminable, it's not even 2 years since Kinda Love was released. and including his fortnight of rehearsal time, Darius has spent over 4 months of that on Chicago alone. Usher says he can barely fit food breaks into the eight show a week schedule. Darius never missed a show and he was doing promotion for the show during the day, charity events at the weekend, sometimes on Sunday his only rest day and sometimes between the matinee and evening shows and he'd still speak to fans at the stage door before he went. He also made return trips to LA to see Natasha and the boys. No wonder he needed a short break after each run. Edited September 17, 200618 yr by Baytree
September 18, 200618 yr fingers crossed we get to hear something now he has his own recording studio, he must be over th emoon with it, I recall from the start he said he would like his own studio. I am sure he has ben learning a lot from the industry and too be honest he wasnt too keen on some of the tinkering the label insisted on from what he has said. Myspace seems the way ahead for songwriters/musicians these days, so here's hoping for a taster or two sooner rather than later. Edited September 18, 200618 yr by prettyinpink
September 21, 200618 yr Does anyone know of any youtube or other video links to Gareth performing any of his own songs from the Night CD? Sunshine would be good too.
September 21, 200618 yr You can watch several live performances here. http://www.garethpaulgates.net/garethlive.html There are a few of his own written songs too. Or there's these. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqbQh3O6elg Edited September 21, 200618 yr by val4jadan
September 21, 200618 yr Fabulous. Thanks, val4jadan. I've just watched Absolutely - that's always been one of my favourite songs. It should have been a single. I also watched Gareth playing some drum solos. Great! The backing on the live version of Enough of Me sounds quite different from the album version Edited September 21, 200618 yr by Baytree
September 21, 200618 yr Not yet but they're are so many different ones. I had a quick peek at the Korean photoshoot too.
September 21, 200618 yr There is isn't there. Must admit to spending an awful lot of time on YouTube. Its certainly not time wasted though
