September 23, 201311 yr Author SEPTEMBER 1983 Summer was closing, I was commuting to my parents NAAFI in Winchester at weeeknds, and working in Mansfield Colourcare photolab factory during the week. Madness' delightful gospel ska chorus was as joyous as Genesis' best-ever record was menacing and disturbing, but so exciting. Bowie's trio of Nile Rodgers' Number Ones was completed as near-misses from New Order, UB40, and Paul Young failed to break the deadlock of former Number Ones, there were so many great ex-toppers pushed down too soon. 6th September chart WINGS OF A DOVE Madness 1 3 7 9 I'M STILL STANDING Elton John 2 2 6 10 MAMA Genesis 3 1 1 2 LONG HOT SUMMER The Style Council 4 9 13 19 CLUB TROPICANA Wham! 5 7 10 14 RED RED WINE UB40 6 4 5 7 BAD DAY Carmel 7 5 8 15 WHAT AM I GONNA DO (WITH YOU) Rod Stewart 8 6 9 12 THE SUN GOES DOWN (LIVING IT UP) Level 42 9 15 15 25 EVERYTHING COUNTS Depeche Mode 10 16 16 23 MOONLIGHT SHADOW Mike Oldfield 11 14 17 18 WATCHING YOU WATCHING ME David Grant 12 12 14 22 DISAPPEARING ACT Shalamar 13 20 26 48 COME DANCING The Kinks 14 29 50 TOUR DE FRANCE Kraftwerk 15 10 21 40 WHO'S THAT GIRL? October 17, 201311 yr Author OCTOBER 1983 Plenty of pop classics in here, and plenty still famous and regularly re-charting tracks. From my point of view it was all about Siouxsie & that fab video in Venice for a Beatles (John Lennon) cover that's actually better than the original. Boy George managed to peak (so catchy it sold a million) and New Order (also a million seller) peaked just short of the top, leapfrogged by Tracey Ullman, who not only gave the world The Simpsons, she gave the great Kirsty Maccoll her first huge hit (as songwriter), so good that another Beatle (Paul McCartney) popped up in the video. Not to mention Nick Heyward and his "it's got 3 great hooks" Blue Hat. These days it would be split into 3 very repetitive hits. Elton wants to kiss the bride, too - right, sure he does! - and Lionel had a golden moment along with Men Without Hats both popping up to 4. 4th Oct chart DEAR PRUDENCE Siouxsie & The Banshees 1 1 3 7 MODERN LOVE David Bowie 2 7 11 18 KARMA CHAMELEON Culture Club 3 2 2 1 BLUE MONDAY New Order 4 3 7 15 MAMA Genesis 5 10 13 19 REBEL RUN Toyah 6 11 23 38 THEY DON'T KNOW Tracey Ullman 7 4 1 2 COME BACK AND STAY Paul Young 8 12 17 25 THIS IS NOT A LOVE SONG PIL 9 8 15 23 TEARS ON THE TELEPHONE Hot Chocolate 10 17 40 45 SECRET MESSAGES E.L.O. 11 20 30 34 RED RED WINE UB40 12 22 35 44 BLUE HAT FOR A BLUE DAY Nick Heyward 13 6 6 5 CHANCE Big Country 14 31 51 73 I'M STILL STANDING Elton John 15 19 22 29 WINGS OF A DOVE Madness 16 24 32 36 KISS THE BRIDE Elton John 17 14 9 6 LOVE IN ITSELF Depeche Mode 18 5 5 3 NEW SONG Howard Jones 19 9 8 13 EVERY BREATH OF THE WAY Melanie 20 13 24 40 SOMEONE BELONGING TO SOMEONE The Bee Gees 21 41 (YOU SAID) YOU'D GIMME SOME MORE K.C. & The Sunshine Band 22 48 MOONLIGHT SHADOW Mike Oldfield 23 29 37 41 DOLCE VITA Ryan Paris 24 54 70 WHAT AM I GONNA DO (WITH YOU) Rod Stewart 25 45 CLUB TROPICANA Wham! 26 35 42 49 THE BIG APPLE Kajagoogoo 27 47 57 LONG HOT SUMMER The Style Council 28 36 44 53 TELEFONE (LONG DISTANCE LOVE) Sheena Easton 29 16 29 52 TAHITI (THEME FROM MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY) David Essex 30 34 46 72 GO DEH YAKA (GO TO THE TOP) Monyaka 31 27 41 47 BAD DAY Carmel 32 42 55 71 BODY WORK Hot Streak 33 46 74 OL' RAG BLUES Status Quo 34 28 60 68 GUNS The Alarm 35 26 26 22 LONDON TOWN Bucks Fizz 36 32 27 27 SHE LOVES YOU The Beatles 37 56 EVERYTHING COUNTS Depeche Mode 38 43 50 67 WATCHING YOU WATCHING ME David Grant 39 53 66 74 THRILLER Michael Jackson 40 40 36 33 CRUSHED BY THE WHEELS OF INDUSTRY Heaven 17 41 THE SUN GOES DOWN (LIVING IT UP) Level 42 42 66 WHAT I GOT IS WHAT YOU NEED Unique 43 61 WALKING IN THE RAIN Modern Romance 44 63 SUPERSTAR (BILLIE JEAN) Lydia Murdoch 45 23 18 16 WHO'S THAT GIRL? November 15, 201311 yr Author 1st November 1983 Tracey Ullman returns to the top as Culture Club starts to become over-familiar. Carly Simon guests and gets to number 2 for the latest in her regular 5-year appearances in the chart which started in 1973 and continued to 1987. It's a strange record, but appealing in a tongue-in-cheek fashion (Will was a woman for a start!). The great video flatters the otherwise not bad Jacko/Macca single before one outbid the other for his back catalogue to lifelong bitterness! Huge jump for one of Duran's best (albeit lesser-known) hits, while Billy does Four Seasons affectionate pastiche and gets mega-hit shock. Elsewhere, Joy Division return after a 3-year break with a classic re-issue. I say break, it was kind of enforced and permanent.. Tina Turner sneaks in at the bottom on the back of a certain "Tube" appearance which proved sensational and career-making for her. Who needs Ike after all, Heaven 17 did very nicely (aka BEF). TV charts a la john: 1. Comic Strip: 5 Go Mad On Mescalin (fab!) 2. Hill Street Blues (hugely influential and fab police soap-drama) 3. The Avengers (60's rpt) 4. Carrott's Lib 5. November 16, 201311 yr Author 8th Nov 1983 Finally getting a belated UK single release to promote a greatest hits package, we were oblivious to the fact that Abba were over. Still, it was an instant number one for me even though it was nowhere close to being one of my fave album tracks, Eagle was the one I wanted! Billy Joel hits 2, not for the last time, but he never went all the way, aahhh! ** Madness shoot in at 7 with what turned out to be the last of their run of fun pop singles, it was to be serious stuff after this ** Police get another Top 10 hit (as always) with a frantic rock track, and Joy Division go Top 10. ** Hall & Oates tended to have big US hits and minor UK hits (or flops), I tended to agree with the USA - white pop soul of the highest standards ** ELO, like Abba, were also (virtually, bar one more minor hit) over as a chart force. I didn't care, they were just out of chart fashion as far as I was concerned they still made great singles ** The recently departed (very sadly) Karen Carpenter had one more new track to go Top 20. November 16, 201311 yr Author 15th Nov 1983 The Cure get the second of a long run of Top 10 hits ** Shaky rockets into the Top 20 with his best single, quite possibly, and an actual rarity to make my Top 20... ** Limahl survives the bitter Kajagoogoo split and keeps on promoting crappy haircuts for the benefit of future generations of hairdressers and misguided young people ** Kenny & Dolly finally make the Top 40 after simmering the Gibbs song a few weeks ** The very last great Stones single ever jumps in at 30, following the Tube's Muriel Grey slagging off of the video ** the trend for androgyny peaks with Marilyn entering the Top 40. November 16, 201311 yr Author 22nd Nov 1983 I suspect my Abba bias is the only reason Joy Division weren't getting that deserved number one this week, but 2 was a good peak anyway ** My relief at having a decent Shaky record at long last must have flattered the chart position a tad! ** The great Stevie (Fleetwood Mac) Nicks gets one of many solo Top 20 hits - her solo career is almost as good as her Mac contributions. Pity the UK singles buyer never agreed ** Thriller had yet to be officially released, and the promised mega-video yet to air, so it was climbing slowly due to delayed release date. Also (1 or 2 years way) ahead of UK chart action, new entries from Nik Kershaw & Pat Benatar, and a debut from osbcure forgotten band The Smiths. Pat & Smiths are classic singles, just brilliant ** chart amusement as Bowie has 3 tracks side by side. It was the 20th anniversary of Dr Who. TV chart therefore: 1. November 17, 201311 yr Author 29th Nov 1983 4th and final week at the top for Abba ** prior to the debut of the first extended promo video (Thriller) a few days later, Jacko enters the top 10 assisted by the great Vincent Price ** Thompson Twins finally get a Top 5 hit, probably their best single ** Tina goes top 10 for the first time in 10 years ** highest new entry the gorgeous Boy George ballad off the fab album Colour By Numbers ** rocketing into the top 20 The Smiths, a record still as fresh as the day it came out ** in at 17, The Beatles latest 20th anniversary reissue, and one of the first records my dad bought, it would have been a 60's number one if I'd started charts a bit earlier ** 2 more early entries for Prince and ZZ Top, big hits of 84/85 ** at 75 a naughty dirty record. December 28, 201311 yr Author 6th DEC 1983 That ground-breaking Thriller video debuted this week and bang! Number One in my chart, Jacko's second of the year and his 6th solo at that point. Slade were back with a vengeance, Culture Club had their 3rd Top 3 in a row, Paul Young 3rd Top 10, and The Beatles classic gave them the Top 10 (but not the number one they would have had back in the mid-60's had I been charting). The Smiths go up to 13 with their classic debut, and Howard Jones is the highest new entry with his great pop single What Is Love. Huey Lewis meanwhile re-enters with his best record (but not best-known, that would be Power Of Love) Bucks Fizz flop doesn't flop here, and the US German hit Major Tom also doesn't flop in my chart. 50's star eartha Kitt purrs in with a club hit, Ozzy Barks a lot, and UB40 do a good cover of a Jimmy Cliff classic reggae non-hit. Oh, yes, The Pretenders pop in with their christmas gem - and it's back in my chart again right now Dec 2013! TV? Lots of 60's shows, some 80's stand-up, Gerry Anderson's tongue-in-cheek Terrahawks and my soap of choice Grange Hill. I think I was missing school as I worked in the photofactory, shifting huge drums of chemicals and boxes of paper. A good day was when I got to drive to make deliveries of photos to Boots in Nottingham, or further afield... sOnqjkJTMaA 1 ( 10 ) THRILLER Michael Jackson 2 ( 1 ) THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC Abba 3 ( 12 ) VICTIMS Culture Club 4 ( 27 ) MY OH MY Slade 5 ( 5 ) HOLD ME NOW The Thompson Twins 6 ( 4 ) CALLING YOUR NAME Marilyn 7 ( 19 ) LOVE OF THE COMMON PEOPLE Paul Young 8 ( 3 ) CRY JUST A LITTLE BIT Shakin' Stevens 9 ( 9 ) LET'S STAY TOGETHER Tina Turner 10 ( 17 ) I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND The Beatles 8slRasAHTA0 11 ( 22 ) ISLANDS IN THE STREAM Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton 12 ( 2 ) LOVE WILL TEAR US APART Joy Division 13 ( 16 ) THIS CHARMING MAN The Smiths 14 ( 20 ) MOVE OVER DARLING Tracey Ullman 15 ( 49 ) PLEASE DON'T FALL IN LOVE Cliff Richard 16 ( 6 ) THE LOVE CATS The Cure 17 ( RE ) HEART AND SOUL Huey Lewis & The News 18 ( 7 ) THE SUN AND THE RAIN Madness 19 ( 15 ) OBLIVIOUS Aztec Camera 20 ( 23 ) A SOLID BOND IN YOUR HEART The Style Council 8TdaXhpjHws 21 ( 11 ) UNDERCOVER OF THE NIGHT The Rolling Stones 22 ( 14 ) UPTOWN GIRL Billy Joel 23 ( 8 ) ONLY FOR LOVE Limahl 24 ( 21 ) SAY SAY SAY Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson 25 ( 25 ) LITTLE RED CORVETTE Prince 26 ( 13 ) SYNCHRONICITY II The Police 27 ( 35 ) ATMOSPHERICS: LISTEN TO THE RADIO Tom Robinson 28 ( 31 ) OWNER OF A LONELY HEART Yes 29 ( NEW ) WHAT IS LOVE Howard Jones 30 ( 33 ) NEVER NEVER The Assembly w34vnz_LEX4 31 ( 29 ) SAY IT ISN'T SO Daryl Hall & John Oates 32 ( 40 ) WATERFRONT Simple Minds 33 ( 18 ) RIGHT BY YOUR SIDE Eurythmics 34 ( 36 ) ONLY YOU The Flying Pickets 35 ( 24 ) THEY DON'T KNOW Tracey Ullman 36 ( 71 ) THE RULES OF THE GAME Bucks Fizz 37 ( 67 ) MAJOR TOM (COMING HOME) Peter Schilling 38 ( 38 ) THAT'S ALL Genesis 39 ( 28 ) KARMA CHAMELEON Culture Club 40 ( NEW ) I CAN HELP Elvis Presley e1Zip8FjR6s 41 ( 32 ) DEAR PRUDENCE Siouxsie & The Banshees 42 ( NEW ) TELL HER ABOUT IT Billy Joel 43 ( NEW ) MANY RIVERS TO CROSS UB40 44 ( 30 ) UNION OF THE SNAKE Duran Duran 45 ( 45 ) CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE Quiet Riot 46 ( 58 ) TWIST OF FATE Olivia Newton-John 47 ( 26 ) FOUR LITTLE DIAMONDS E.L.O. 48 ( 41 ) ALL NIGHT LONG Lionel Richie 49 ( 37 ) KISSING WITH CONFIDENCE Will Powers (with Carly Simon) 50 ( 39 ) THE SAFETY DANCE Men Without Hats 51 ( 51 ) LET'S DANCE David Bowie 52 ( 60 ) BILLIE JEAN Michael Jackson 53 ( NEW ) BARK AT THE MOON Ozzy Osbourne 54 ( 70 ) THE LIFEBOAT PARTY Kid Creole & The Coconuts 55 ( 46 ) MAMA Genesis 56 ( 55 ) THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME Abba 57 ( 63 ) ROCK THE MIDNIGHT David Grant 58 ( 48 ) I'M STILL STANDING Elton John 59 ( NEW ) THE WAY YOU ARE Tears For Fears 60 ( NEW ) THAT'S LOVE THAT IT IS Blancmange 61 ( 44 ) BLUE MONDAY New Order 62 ( 57 ) MOONLIGHT SHADOW Mike Oldfield 63 ( 34 ) IF ANYONE FALLS Stevie Nicks 64 ( 72 ) TERRY Kirsty MacColl 65 ( 42 ) PUSS 'N' BOOTS Adam Ant 66 ( 52 ) LOVE IN ITSELF Depeche Mode 67 ( 61 ) SHARP DRESSED MAN ZZ Top 68 ( 53 ) BLUE HAT FOR A BLUE DAY Nick Heyward 69 ( NEW ) HOLIDAY ROAD Lyndsey Buckingham 70 ( NEW ) INSIDE LOVE George Benson 71 ( NEW ) WHERE IS MY MAN Eartha Kitt 72 ( 56 ) KISS THE BRIDE Elton John 73 ( NEW ) YOU'RE IN MY HEART David Essex 74 ( 43 ) THE VOW Toyah 75 ( NEW ) 2000 MILES The Pretenders Nmx3QC7n6sk TV 1 The Twilight Zone (2 eps) 2 MASH 3 Carrott's Lib 4 The Bob Monkhouse Show (Joan Rivers) 5 The Phil Silvers Show (2 eps) 6 Top Of The Pops 7 Soap 8 The Munsters 9 Entertainment USA 10 Grange Hill (2 eps) 11 Barney Miller 12 Terrahawks 13 The Addams Family 14 The Avengers 15 Clive James On Television -b5aW08ivHU Edited December 28, 201311 yr by popchartfreak
December 29, 201311 yr Author 13th DEC 1983 Third number one for Culture Club, by far their best ballad, affecting and powerful. Very much in emote mood, with Slade, Thompson Twins and Cliff (for 15 years of top 10 hits to that point). Tracey Ullman covers Doris Day movie theme classic, her greatest moment was still to come when The Simpsons spun-off her TV show. Highest new entry is Slade, back not for the first time on it's 10th anniversary, and not for the last time (see 40th anniversary entry in 2013!) - but the highest proper new track is Barry Manilow with an unlikely (yet so right) cover of Meatloaf. Quo back with another party hit, Macca back with a new year wartime message anthem, Frida comes back with an Abba instrumental (plus new words) and Terrahawks TV show theme pops in mostly cos I chuckled constantly at Zelda one-liners in the show and it's parodies of The Beatles, Richard III and others. Talking of TV, Dallas starts to enter it's classic phase and pops in my TV chart - JR one-liners were the main appeal, of course, often hilarious. Dynasty, it's main rival, was dreary and had no sense of self-parody or humour. jnRGS-l1-3A 1 ( 3 ) VICTIMS Culture Club 2 ( 1 ) THRILLER Michael Jackson 3 ( 4 ) MY OH MY Slade 4 ( 5 ) HOLD ME NOW The Thompson Twins 5 ( 7 ) LOVE OF THE COMMON PEOPLE Paul Young 6 ( 2 ) THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC Abba 7 ( 10 ) I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND The Beatles 8 ( 17 ) HEART AND SOUL Huey Lewis & The News 9 ( 15 ) PLEASE DON'T FALL IN LOVE Cliff Richard 10 ( 14 ) MOVE OVER DARLING Tracey Ullman H9694K85Xc8 11 ( 9 ) LET'S STAY TOGETHER Tina Turner 12 ( 6 ) CALLING YOUR NAME Marilyn 13 ( 29 ) WHAT IS LOVE Howard Jones 14 ( NEW ) MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY Slade 15 ( 11 ) ISLANDS IN THE STREAM Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton 16 ( 8 ) CRY JUST A LITTLE BIT Shakin' Stevens 17 ( 36 ) THE RULES OF THE GAME Bucks Fizz 18 ( 13 ) THIS CHARMING MAN The Smiths 19 ( 42 ) TELL HER ABOUT IT Billy Joel 20 ( 16 ) THE LOVE CATS The Cure m6o5xlbTt8E 21 ( 12 ) LOVE WILL TEAR US APART Joy Division 22 ( 22 ) UPTOWN GIRL Billy Joel 23 ( 43 ) MANY RIVERS TO CROSS UB40 24 ( 24 ) SAY SAY SAY Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson 25 ( 18 ) THE SUN AND THE RAIN Madness 26 ( 28 ) OWNER OF A LONELY HEART Yes 27 ( 21 ) UNDERCOVER OF THE NIGHT The Rolling Stones 28 ( 20 ) A SOLID BOND IN YOUR HEART The Style Council 29 ( 19 ) OBLIVIOUS Aztec Camera 30 ( 75 ) 2000 MILES The Pretenders 2vV_L7OQtU0 31 ( 31 ) SAY IT ISN'T SO Daryl Hall & John Oates 32 ( 32 ) WATERFRONT Simple Minds 33 ( NEW ) READ 'EM AND WEEP Barry Manilow 34 ( 30 ) NEVER NEVER The Assembly 35 ( 23 ) ONLY FOR LOVE Limahl 36 ( 40 ) I CAN HELP Elvis Presley 37 ( NEW ) MARGARITA TIME Status Quo 38 ( 34 ) ONLY YOU The Flying Pickets 39 ( 33 ) RIGHT BY YOUR SIDE Eurythmics 40 ( 71 ) WHERE IS MY MAN Eartha Kitt atZS2PNi0pU 41 ( 35 ) THEY DON'T KNOW Tracey Ullman 42 ( 25 ) LITTLE RED CORVETTE Prince 43 ( 53 ) BARK AT THE MOON Ozzy Osbourne 44 ( 26 ) SYNCHRONICITY II The Police 45 ( 39 ) KARMA CHAMELEON Culture Club 46 ( NEW ) PIPES OF PEACE Paul McCartney 47 ( 41 ) DEAR PRUDENCE Siouxsie & The Banshees 48 ( RE ) RELAX Frankie Goes To Hollywood 49 ( 27 ) ATMOSPHERICS: LISTEN TO THE RADIO Tom Robinson 50 ( 60 ) THAT'S LOVE THAT IT IS Blancmange J7ErrZ-ipoE 51 ( 51 ) LET'S DANCE David Bowie 52 ( 52 ) BILLIE JEAN Michael Jackson 53 ( NEW ) CLUB FANTASTIC MEGAMIX Wham! 54 ( NEW ) THEME FROM TERRAHAWKS Terrahawks 55 ( 56 ) THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME Abba 56 ( 59 ) THE WAY YOU ARE Tears For Fears 57 ( 44 ) UNION OF THE SNAKE Duran Duran 58 ( NEW ) TIME (aka ARRIVAL) Frida and B.A. Robertson 59 ( 37 ) MAJOR TOM (COMING HOME) Peter Schilling 60 ( 73 ) YOU'RE IN MY HEART David Essex xtQkmIU6Fpk 61 ( 70 ) INSIDE LOVE George Benson 62 ( 55 ) MAMA Genesis 63 ( NEW ) COLD AS CHRISTMAS Elton John 64 ( 69 ) HOLIDAY ROAD Lyndsey Buckingham 65 ( 58 ) I'M STILL STANDING Elton John 66 ( 48 ) ALL NIGHT LONG Lionel Richie 67 ( 45 ) CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE Quiet Riot 68 ( 49 ) KISSING WITH CONFIDENCE Will Powers (with Carly Simon) 69 ( 62 ) MOONLIGHT SHADOW Mike Oldfield 70 ( NEW ) SWEET SURRENDER Rod Stewart 71 ( 47 ) FOUR LITTLE DIAMONDS E.L.O. 72 ( 50 ) THE SAFETY DANCE Men Without Hats 73 ( NEW ) CRUMBLIN' DOWN John Cougar Mellencamp 74 ( NEW ) SMILE Will Powers 75 ( 46 ) TWIST OF FATE Olivia Newton-John TV 1 The Twilight Zone (2 eps) 2 MASH 3 The Phil Silvers Show 4 Grange Hill (2 eps) 5 The Rockford Files 6 Entertainment USA 7 Taxi 8 The Day After (film) 9 Top Of The Pops 10 Dallas Edited December 29, 201311 yr by popchartfreak
December 30, 201311 yr Author 20th DEC 1983 Second week at the top for Culture Club and a haunting lead-in to a jolly Christmas (at least Slade gives that impression in the Top 10). Pipes Of Peace shoots up 34 places, Quo’s party 22 places, and Manilow 15 for a mature-looking Top 20. One of Olivia’s final singles (not a hit) reverses falls to climb 75 to twist it’s way up to 26. The fabulous Yes single criminally peaks at 26, the Trevor Horn-produced epic rock track really should have been top 3. I need an excuse to re-chart it! Highest new entry is Nick Heyward, just behind a slowly-climbing Trevor Horn-produced new band who were relaxing in a naughty fashion. I wonder how it will do in 1984.…! There were precious few Christmas hits in those days, and most were new: 3 in fact, one of them very obscure! Lowest entry is from the late Bing Crosby and recently-late (Princess) Grace Kelly, from a classic movie and later covered by Elton & Kiki, Elton in the meantime is as Cold As Christmas. Step Into Christmas is a better sentiment though, as the former isn‘t really a Christmas song despite the title! 1 ( 1 ) VICTIMS Culture Club 2 ( 3 ) MY OH MY Slade 3 ( 4 ) HOLD ME NOW The Thompson Twins 4 ( 13 ) WHAT IS LOVE Howard Jones 5 ( 5 ) LOVE OF THE COMMON PEOPLE Paul Young 6 ( 2 ) THRILLER Michael Jackson 7 ( 14 ) MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY Slade 8 ( 10 ) MOVE OVER DARLING Tracey Ullman 9 ( 9 ) PLEASE DON'T FALL IN LOVE Cliff Richard 10 ( 6 ) THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC Abba aOBsf6U8sbo 11 ( 11 ) LET'S STAY TOGETHER Tina Turner 12 ( 46 ) PIPES OF PEACE Paul McCartney 13 ( 8 ) HEART AND SOUL Huey Lewis & The News 14 ( 36 ) MARGUERITA TIME Status Quo 15 ( 15 ) ISLANDS IN THE STREAM Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton 16 ( 23 ) MANY RIVERS TO CROSS UB40 17 ( 19 ) TELL HER ABOUT IT Billy Joel 18 ( 33 ) READ 'EM AND WEEP Barry Manilow 19 ( 12 ) CALLING YOUR NAME Marilyn 20 ( 30 ) 2000 MILES The Pretenders Q9vFSqXu6XI 21 ( 7 ) I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND The Beatles 22 ( 16 ) CRY JUST A LITTLE BIT Shakin' Stevens 23 ( 20 ) THE LOVE CATS The Cure 24 ( 18 ) THIS CHARMING MAN The Smiths 25 ( 22 ) UPTOWN GIRL Billy Joel 26 ( 75 ) TWIST OF FATE Olivia Newton-John 27 ( 17 ) THE RULES OF THE GAME Bucks Fizz 28 ( 40 ) WHERE IS MY MAN Eartha Kitt 29 ( 38 ) ONLY YOU The Flying Pickets 30 ( 36 ) I CAN HELP Elvis Presley 31 ( 26 ) OWNER OF A LONELY HEART Yes 32 ( 48 ) RELAX Frankie Goes To Hollywood 33 ( 24 ) SAY SAY SAY Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson 34 ( NEW ) ON A SUNDAY Nick Heyward 35 ( 25 ) THE SUN AND THE RAIN Madness 36 ( 21 ) LOVE WILL TEAR US APART Joy Division 37 ( 31 ) SAY IT ISN'T SO Daryl Hall & John Oates 38 ( 27 ) UNDERCOVER OF THE NIGHT The Rolling Stones 39 ( 63 ) COLD AS CHRISTMAS Elton John 40 ( 44 ) SYNCHRONICITY II The Police 41 ( 29 ) OBLIVIOUS Aztec Camera 42 ( 54 ) THEME FROM TERRAHAWKS Terrahawks 43 ( 50 ) THAT'S LOVE THAT IT IS Blancmange 44 ( 41 ) THEY DON'T KNOW Tracey Ullman 45 ( 45 ) KARMA CHAMELEON Culture Club 46 ( 28 ) A SOLID BOND IN YOUR HEART The Style Council 47 ( 53 ) CLUB FANTASTIC MEGAMIX Wham! 48 ( 39 ) RIGHT BY YOUR SIDE Eurythmics 49 ( 56 ) THE WAY YOU ARE Tears For Fears 50 ( 58 ) TIME (aka ARRIVAL) Frida and B.A. Robertson 51 ( 47 ) DEAR PRUDENCE Siouxsie & The Banshees 52 ( 52 ) BILLIE JEAN Michael Jackson 53 ( 51 ) LET'S DANCE David Bowie 54 ( 35 ) ONLY FOR LOVE Limahl 55 ( 61 ) INSIDE LOVE George Benson 56 ( 55 ) THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME Abba 57 ( NEW ) CHRISTMAS SPECTRE The Jingle Belles 58 ( 42 ) LITTLE RED CORVETTE Prince 59 ( 32 ) WATERFRONT Simple Minds 60 ( 60 ) YOU'RE IN MY HEART David Essex 61 ( 34 ) NEVER NEVER The Assembly 62 ( 70 ) SWEET SURRENDER Rod Stewart 63 ( 57 ) UNION OF THE SNAKE Duran Duran 64 ( 64 ) HOLIDAY ROAD Lyndsey Buckingham 65 ( NEW ) DUCK FOR THE OYSTER Malcolm McLaren 66 ( 62 ) MAMA Genesis 67 ( NEW ) STRAIGHT AHEAD Kool And The Gang 68 ( 43 ) BARK AT THE MOON Ozzy Osbourne 69 ( 73 ) CRUMBLIN' DOWN John Cougar Mellencamp 70 ( 65 ) I'M STILL STANDING Elton John 71 ( NEW ) TRUE LOVE Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly 72 ( 49 ) ATMOSPHERICS: LISTEN TO THE RADIO Tom Robinson 73 ( 74 ) SMILE Will Powers 74 ( 59 ) MAJOR TOM (COMING HOME) Peter Schilling 75 ( 66 ) ALL NIGHT LONG Lionel Richie TV 1 MONKEY BUSINESS (Marx Brothers film) 2 MASH 3 Soap 4 Top Of The Pops 5 Entertainment USA 6 CAPRICORN ONE (film) 7 The Addams Family/ The Munsters 8 PIRHANA (film) 9 The Phil Silvers Show 10 ROLLERBALL (film) Edited December 30, 201311 yr by popchartfreak
December 30, 201311 yr Author 27th DEC 1983 Christmas week and TV overload, especially film classics, and also the debut of a new sitcom called Cheers. Where everybody, NORM!, knows your name, apparently. Morn in Deep Space 9 was an anagrammatic tribute to a classic TV series character. One of the greatest (gorgeous) Christmas classics re-enters at 2 for Greg Lake, first time to return (but not the last, see my 2013 Christmas number one!), but is held off by the singalong anthem from Slade, My Oh My, only their second ever number one - even Merry Christmas Everybody (at 7 this week) peaked at 3 first-time round! Frida goes top 30, one of her few solo (ish) trips into the top half of the chart (and B.A. Robertsons’ 6th time). Little did we know that Abba were no more….sob! Malcolm McLaren quacks his way into the 40, leaving his Sex Pistol days far behind, and Kool And The Gang get the latest in a very long string of hits, most of them sounding like the previous ones albeit in a mildly pleasant fashion. Ditto George Benson. Lionel Richie follows-up a classic with a great moody dance single, Raf Ravenscroft (of the greatest-ever sax solo of all-time on Baker Street fame) has his own minor moment, and things get a bit gay with Gloria Gaynor and The Weather Girls tickling the chart under-belly. Compared to Roland Rat and Dennis Waterman, they are Mozart. I can only assume I was short on records that week as they are both TV-inspired drivel. I mean, really baaaaad drivel. What. Was. I. Thinking! ytvOWwe_pmw 1 ( 2 ) MY OH MY Slade 2 ( NEW ) I BELIEVE IN FATHER CHRISTMAS Greg Lake 3 ( 1 ) VICTIMS Culture Club 4 ( 4 ) WHAT IS LOVE Howard Jones 5 ( 14 ) MARGUERITA TIME Status Quo 6 ( 12 ) PIPES OF PEACE Paul McCartney 7 ( 7 ) MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY Slade 8 ( 3 ) HOLD ME NOW The Thompson Twins 9 ( 5 ) LOVE OF THE COMMON PEOPLE Paul Young 10 ( 6 ) THRILLER Michael Jackson 11 ( 9 ) PLEASE DON'T FALL IN LOVE Cliff Richard 12 ( 20 ) 2000 MILES The Pretenders 13 ( 16 ) MANY RIVERS TO CROSS UB40 14 ( 18 ) READ 'EM AND WEEP Barry Manilow 15 ( 10 ) THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC Abba 16 ( 11 ) LET'S STAY TOGETHER Tina Turner 17 ( 17 ) TELL HER ABOUT IT Billy Joel 18 ( 15 ) ISLANDS IN THE STREAM Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton 19 ( 8 ) MOVE OVER DARLING Tracey Ullman 20 ( 39 ) COLD AS CHRISTMAS Elton John qU4xZ5fbVt0 21 ( 13 ) HEART AND SOUL Huey Lewis & The News 22 ( 30 ) I CAN HELP Elvis Presley 23 ( 26 ) TWIST OF FATE Olivia Newton-John 24 ( 19 ) CALLING YOUR NAME Marilyn 25 ( 29 ) ONLY YOU The Flying Pickets 26 ( 22 ) CRY JUST A LITTLE BIT Shakin' Stevens 27 ( 50 ) TIME (aka ARRIVAL) Frida and B.A. Robertson 28 ( 65 ) DUCK FOR THE OYSTER Malcolm McLaren 29 ( 57 ) CHRISTMAS SPECTRE The Jingle Belles 30 ( 32 ) RELAX Frankie Goes To Hollywood 31 ( 25 ) UPTOWN GIRL Billy Joel 32 ( 67 ) STRAIGHT AHEAD Kool And The Gang 33 ( 21 ) I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND The Beatles 34 ( 34 ) ON A SUNDAY Nick Heyward 35 ( 23 ) THE LOVE CATS The Cure 36 ( 24 ) THIS CHARMING MAN The Smiths 37 ( 55 ) INSIDE LOVE George Benson 38 ( 28 ) WHERE IS MY MAN Eartha Kitt 39 ( 42 ) THEME FROM TERRAHAWKS Terrahawks 40 ( 49 ) THE WAY YOU ARE Tears For Fears 41 ( 27 ) THE RULES OF THE GAME Bucks Fizz 42 ( 33 ) SAY SAY SAY Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson 43 ( 31 ) OWNER OF A LONELY HEART Yes 44 ( 40 ) SYNCHRONICITY II The Police 45 ( 44 ) THEY DON'T KNOW Tracey Ullman 46 ( 37 ) SAY IT ISN'T SO Daryl Hall & John Oates 47 ( 35 ) THE SUN AND THE RAIN Madness 48 ( 45 ) KARMA CHAMELEON Culture Club 49 ( NEW ) RUNNING WITH THE NIGHT Lionel Richie 50 ( 36 ) LOVE WILL TEAR US APART Joy Division 6PnhlXLHKAE 51 ( 38 ) UNDERCOVER OF THE NIGHT The Rolling Stones 52 ( 52 ) BILLIE JEAN Michael Jackson 53 ( 53 ) LET'S DANCE David Bowie 54 ( 51 ) DEAR PRUDENCE Siouxsie & The Banshees 55 ( 63 ) UNION OF THE SNAKE Duran Duran 56 ( 56 ) THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME Abba 57 ( NEW ) MAXINE Raf Ravenscroft 58 ( 62 ) SWEET SURRENDER Rod Stewart 59 ( NEW ) DEAR SANTA The Weather Girls 60 ( 41 ) OBLIVIOUS Aztec Camera 61 ( NEW ) RAT RAPPING Roland Rat 62 ( 43 ) THAT'S LOVE THAT IT IS Blancmange 63 ( NEW ) I AM WHAT I AM Gloria Gaynor 64 ( 47 ) CLUB FANTASTIC MEGAMIX Wham! 65 ( 59 ) WATERFRONT Simple Minds 66 ( 71 ) TRUE LOVE Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly 67 ( 46 ) A SOLID BOND IN YOUR HEART The Style Council 68 ( NEW ) STEAMHAMMER SAM Interferon 69 ( 66 ) MAMA Genesis 70 ( 48 ) RIGHT BY YOUR SIDE Eurythmics 71 ( 54 ) ONLY FOR LOVE Limahl 72 ( NEW ) BIRD OF PARADISE Snowy White 73 ( 58 ) LITTLE RED CORVETTE Prince 74 ( NEW ) LOVE IS A WONDERFUL COLOUR The Icicle Works 75 ( NEW ) WHAT ARE WE GONNA GET 'ER INDOORS Dennis Waterman and George Cole p1RyvR210m0 TV 1 FAME (film) 2 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (film) 3 M*A*S*H 4 Cheers 5 IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD (film) 6 Top Of The Pops: 20th Anniversary show 7 The Phil Silvers Show 8 The Early Beatles 9 A Kick Up The 80's 10 Soap 11 MIDNIGHT COWBOY (film) 12 Bewitched 13 Lou Grant 14 The Rockford Files 15 The Prisoner 16 The Munsters 17 Best Of British Comedy 18 Doctor Who (2 eps) 19 Grange Hill (2 eps) 20 Best Of Film 83 Edited December 30, 201311 yr by popchartfreak
