September 14, 201311 yr What about these from the 80's Kate Robbins - More than in love Laurie Anderson - O superman Fat Larry's Band - Zoom Neil - Hole in my show Su Pollard - Starting together Judi Boucher - Can't be with you tonight Bomb The Bass - Beat dis
September 14, 201311 yr In a year with so many classics that hit #2 (My Name Is, Better Off Alone, Turn Around, Right Here Right Now, Beautiful Stranger, Wild Wild West, S Club Party, If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time, Re-Rewind) this one seems to be off-place, doesn't it? aBZ-3_Bm9U8 I love those songs! And I am so surprised Right Here Right Now, B.S, W.W.W and S Club didn't reach no.1 :S ESPECIALLY S Club!! Didn't realise that iconic Alice Deejay song hit no.2, always thought it flopped.
September 15, 201311 yr Is that just a random list of songs that peaked at 2 in the 80s? Seems to be. Judy Boucher spent 4 weeks at no.2, so anything but a 'non number 2'. And I would urge anybody who has never heard 'O Superman' to check it out and promise to listen to it all the way through, it's very long. One of the most bizzare tracks ever to make the charts, never mind no.2. It most definately is *not* radio friendly!
September 15, 201311 yr Never heard of them. Says more about you than anything else, to be honest. "Zoom" is still widely played, and as mentioned above "O Superman" is quite like anything else that has ever charted
September 15, 201311 yr It seems to me that any number 2 that doesn't still get played on the radio is a non-number 2.
September 15, 201311 yr Is that just a random list of songs that peaked at 2 in the 80s? Apart from "O Superman", I never heard any of those songs before they were featured in some of those Gezza countdowns here in BJ, so I thought most of them were flash in the pan #2. Now I know that at least Judy Boucher wasn't, but then again I don't live in Britain. I do know that "O Superman" had a weird run and after reaching #2, it dropped like a rock. Nevertheless, it's still staggering how a song so non-chart-y managed to peak so high, especially in the 80's.
September 15, 201311 yr "Hole in my Shoe" had 3 weeks at number 2, "Beat Dis" 2 + a week at number 3, "More Than In Love" 1 at 2 and 2 at 3, so their weeks at number 2 were by no means flukes
September 15, 201311 yr It seems to me that any number 2 that doesn't still get played on the radio is a non-number 2. Trouble is though that "the radio" isn't monolithic - the stations that are playing 'Zoom' now aren't going to be the same ones that play 'Beat Dis' for example. If you listen to Capital, anything that peaked at 2 before about five years ago would be a non-no-2 (the exceptions are presumably 'Last Christmas', 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' and 'Fairytale of NY'). If you listen to Smooth I'd think 'Gold Digger' was. Also, I think there is a difference between a song that was popular at the time and utterly forgotten in retrospect (like 'Can't Be With You Tonight') and one that was only lucky to get there in the first place, like 'The Love of Richard Nixon'.
October 3, 201311 yr ISTM that if the Vamps hold their midweek position, they'll soon qualify as a non-#1, or if they drop a place, a non-#2... :P
