Posted March 11, 201312 yr WH Smith re-enters the CD/DVD market Source: by Rhian Jones WH Smith has reportedly started to stock CDs and DVDs again after the collapse of HMV has left a gap in the retail market. The stationary chain withdrew from the entertainment market over the last few years but is now said to be re-stocking products in a handful of stores, after the closure of 107 HMV sites. WH Smith is understood to be considering the reintroduction of CDs and DVDs on a store-by-store basis. Sales from CDs and DVDs now account for a single digit percentage of WH Smith’s sales, compared to a quarter ten years ago. In the 20 weeks to January 20, WH Smith reported a 5% drop in like-for-like High Street sales and a 4% decline in its travel stores at airports, railway stations and service station ==== Now... this is a good move.

Our WH Smiths already has a few DVD's for sale, but it'll be great if they do start to carry CD's again... :)
March 11, 201312 yr Good move i guess as long as they don't go down the route they did a few years ago of thinking its acceptable to stock chart CDs for £14.99!
March 11, 201312 yr Very clever, there's a definite market. Although their pricing strategy would need to be spot on.
March 11, 201312 yr WHSmith are a dreadful shop, there are so many better shops of that type out there. I really don't think that this decision will help CD sales out that much in the long run.
March 11, 201312 yr Good move i guess as long as they don't go down the route they did a few years ago of thinking its acceptable to stock chart CDs for £14.99! Where have you been?! :o Oh this is good news! I have a WH Smiths in my local town, so it will be easier for me to get a hold of CDs instead of travelling to Scarborough.
March 11, 201312 yr Where I live, they still stock quite a few CDs and DVDs anyway! But, this is good news!

Oh i always lurk but don't always post :kink: And of WHS i hope this works out but i can just see them thinking this is an opportunity to try to sell overpriced CDs - Really cant see them being price competitive as they don't seem to be on any other products!
March 11, 201312 yr My WH Smiths is where Woolworths used to be, so having CDs stocked there will be just like old times! :D Do we know when the date is that they start stocking?
March 11, 201312 yr Even five years ago all WHSmiths I know still had a healthy quantity of CDs, many priced as low as a couple of pounds, although as this decade approached they disappeared fairly rapidly. The most remarkable thing I saw in there in recent times, at the very end of 2007, was a copy of Now That's What I Call Music 58 - on cassette!! It was the last time I ever saw a music cassette on sale outside of a charity shop, and was knocked down to £3. Needless to say I bought it just for the novelty value  Agreed with all the above, if they price them outrageously high it's a waste of time. Need to combat online pricing.
March 11, 201312 yr as someone who works at a smiths, I can say that the average new CD I've seen in store is £9.99, which is just the same as what HMV would sell them for really.
March 13, 201312 yr As long as its cheaper than they used to be in WHSmiths! Sometimes it'd be around £14/15 for a new release in the Smiths near me back in the day!
March 20, 201312 yr A great market for sales in NI since we're down to 1 HMV since the weekend. Ah but wait - WH Smith also f***ed off out of the market here last year selling the small number of stores they had.....
March 21, 201312 yr If they can be competitively priced then they have a real shot at it. I don't think I've ever seen ANYTHING in WHSmith that isn't overpriced though. :( I just don't understand how they are still in business, charging the prices they do.

March 21, 201312 yr ...other than the cheap chocolate they try and flog at the till when you are paying for your overpriced staionery. And even that 'cheap' chocolate is move expensive than the chocolate sold in all of the thousands of supermarkets in every town center.
