It's on HBO though which is subscription only. It's like Showtime. Both Dexter (now at least) and Homeland pull in 2-3 million viewers per live episode, but they're talked about loads. It's because they can be viewed on-demand, and there's multiple viewings throughout the week. The numbers are pretty big, but nowhere near say The Walking Dead levels because AMC is a free cable channel, and HBO is a subscription only channel. I can't remember the exact numbers, but it's something like 100m have AMC and 40m have HBO.
Stuff like this I did not know before now. So it makes sense as to why (despite the hype) it "only" pulls in as much as it does. Thanks for clearing that up for me. (And I guess it's why these channels take into account the DVD/Blu-Ray sales side of things more than most other networks, that you guys were talking about/touched on not so long ago).

Yeah both Showtime and HBO pay massive attention to DVD sales, and overseas sales to other countries actually matter. Because these channels don't have adverts, they don't rely on advertisers to foot the bill and create profit. So the demographic ratings basically don't mean anything, they're just interesting. For example Game of Thrones currently beats every drama on a Sunday night. Instead they make money off subscriptions, DVD/Blu-Ray, Netflix, Merchandise et al. It's all about maximising subscription levels as that's how both HBO and Showtime predominately make money. Ratings don't really mean too much. All it does is allow us to measure how valuable the show(s) must be to the network. Then of course the other way to determine a show's popularity is to measure it against other shows.

The Walking Dead is just a monster in it's own right though. I don't think anyone knows, not even Robert Kirkman, how it became such a monster.

3.2 American Idol

2.7 Survivor

1.8 Law & Order SVU

1.5 How To Live With Your Parents

1.3 Dateline

1.0 Arrow

1.0 Supernatural

so ABC premieres HTLWYP, and then on the 2nd episode and 3rd episode, they surround it with repeats. Smart choice guys! Another show you decided to kill right from the start...

That is quite the drop off, that's 2.9, 2.5, 2.0, 1.5 for the 4 episodes so far. I mean I'm sure when MF returns it will go back up but that's hardly boding well for the future.
A new show needs all the help it can get to build an audience. Letting it fend for itself right at the start is just stupid, because there is no fanbase that will follow the show yet, and if people see its a night of repeats with just that new show on, people wont bother sticking around

Finals

3.3 American Idol

2.9 Survivor (season high)

1.9 Law & Order SVU

ABC scheduling has been awful, Suburgatory didn't make the most of the MF lead-in but airing it so often after a repeat didn't help. Next week will be the key point for How To Live..

I think it'll return to the low 2.0's and seal its renewal, but I can't see it going anything other than the way of Apartment 23.

4.2 The Big Bang Theory

Hannibal dead. There was some NFL on cable last night and even with DST I'm surprised that a show can move between 6.0+ and 4.2 in one season.

-insert weekly hope that Scandal beats Grey's in the finals-

Season/Series low for: BBT, Two And A Half Men, American Idol, Person Of Interest, Elementary, Wife Swap, Community, Parks & Recreation, Hannibal, Vampire Diaries.

Ouch for PoI, though by all accounts it was a bit of a dud episode. YAY Scandal, I'm really surprised it's managing to buck the trend.

Revolution, Chicago Fire, Parenthood, Law & Order: SVU and Grimm all renewed!

(And I hear they're all 22 episode orders, second time in five seasons for Parenthood)

Superb news for Parenthood!!! All of those were pretty safe bet's for NBC renewal.

WTF happened to Parks??? America's lack of taste horrifies me sometimes.

Hmm, I wonder if a 22 episode order for Revolution might be a bit much. Not that it getting a renewal is surprising.
