Posted April 22, 201312 yr So I've been in such a Eurovision mood for the past few weeks and there's not been much discussion in this forum considering the contest is less than a month away. Therefore I've compiled my top 50 Eurovision songs to hopefully get everybody in the mood! The songs are only from 1996 onwards as that was when I started watching the contest and I haven't watched all the previous years so can't really do an all-time countdown, maybe one day. LET THE SHOW BEGIN! :D Edited June 3, 201312 yr by AdamAloud
April 22, 201312 yr Author 50. | Charmed - My Heart Goes Boom 49. | Hadise - Düm Tek Tek 48. NETHERLANDS 1999 | Marlayne - One Good Reason 47. CROATIA 1999 | Doris Dragović - Marija Magdalena 46. | Edsilia Rombley - Hemel en aarde 3IcuzcZQOC4 Kicking things off is the Norwegian entry from way back in 2000. Charmed had the infectious 'My Heart Goes Boom', but unfortunately missed the top 10 by just 2 points. Belgian-Turkish singer Hadise represented Turkey in 2009, overtaking the UK at the final hurdle to claim 4th place. At 48 is our first pre-2000 entry, 'One Good Reason' for the Netherlands, taking advantage of the free choice language rule being reintroduced in 1999. Also from that year is the Croatian entry. 'Marija Magdalena' caused a stir when pre-recorded vocals were clearly audible on the backing track, something which is still against the rules today. As a result, Croatia got 33% deducted from their score, for the purposes of calculating their 5 year average, something which was needed to determine if a country got relegated from taking part in the next contest. Another Dutch entry at 46, this time 'Hemel en aarde' from 1998. Edsilia later went on to represent the Netherlands again in 2007, but didn't make it through the semi finals.
April 22, 201312 yr Me likes some Hammel en Aarde! (Really must get to checking out the late 90s Eurovision songs other than Gina G properly).
April 23, 201312 yr My last countdown also was started with Charmed song. :) Like : Marlayne - One Good Reason Charmed - My Heart Goes Boom
April 23, 201312 yr Author 45. | Serebro - Song No.1 44. | One More Time - Den vilda 43. | Ines - Once In A Lifetime 42. | D'NASH - I Love You Mi Vida 41. | Marija Šerifović – Molitva FSueQN1QvV4 Continuing with my favourite Russian entry, Serebro took the bronze medal in 2007. At 44 is a true Swedish classic, the stunning ‘Den vilda’ by One More Time. Definitely deserving of its top 3 placing in 1996. ‘Once In A Lifetime’, the Estonian entry from 2000 is at 43, a period where Estonia really were at the top of their game. A real guilty pleasure of mine is D’NASH and their entry ‘I Love You Mi Vida’, which really should’ve done better than 20th, though they did perform in the notorious second position. At 41 is the 2007 winner, ‘Molitva’ by Marija Šerifović gave Serbia their first win on their first attempt as an independent nation. It’s the key change here which really make this such a brilliant track and a great winner.
April 26, 201312 yr Author 40. | Nicola - Don't Break My Heart 39. | Selma - If I Had Your Love 38. | Lena - Taken By A Stranger 37. NETHERLANDS 2003 | Esther Hart - One More Night 36. | Beth – Dime e8USu9t9260 I always thought 2003 was quite an average year but looking back there’s actually a fair few highlights. Nicola’s ‘Don’t Break My Heart’ is certainly one of them and is my favourite Romanian entry to date. A disappointing DNQ from Iceland’s Selma, ‘If I Had Your Love’ was truly deserving of a place in the final. Lena took to defending her title at the 2011 contest, with the slick and cool ‘Taken By A Stranger’, giving her a second consecutive top 10 result. Back to 2003 at 37 with the Dutch entry ‘One More Night’ and Beth’s ‘Dime’ representing Spain.
April 28, 201312 yr "Don't Break My Heart" - funny "One More Night", "If I Had Your Love", "Once In A Lifetime" - nice "Taken By A Stranger" - very dark for pop Spanish songs are nothing special level. Edited April 28, 201312 yr by AlexRange
April 28, 201312 yr Author Thanks for all the comments and replies so far guys! 35. | Ani Lorak - Shady Lady 34. | Kate Ryan - Je t'adore 33. | Feminnem - Lako je sve 32. | Ivi Adamou - La La Love 31. | Jessica Garlick - Come Back 2NSR5rSk0Cs Next is Buzzjack’s favourite Eurovision entry of the last 10 years, ‘Shady Lady’ by Ani Lorak would’ve been a much suitable winner that year than Dima Bilan’s borefest. A true Eurovision tragedy in the form of the Belgian DNQ from 2006. I really don’t know what went wrong for Kate Ryan as ‘Je t’adore’ is a magnificent piece of europop. At 33 is the Croatian entry from 2010 and another unjust DNQ. ‘Lako je sve’ was reminiscent of ‘Molitva’ and I really thought it would be a guaranteed top 10 finish in the final for them. Now for a europop song that did qualify for the final, ‘La La Love’ by Ivi Adamou gave Cyprus their best finish in years but still deserved a much higher position on the scoreboard. And at 31 is the UK entry from 2002, ‘Come Back’ gave Jessica Garlick a top 3 position technically fourth and remains the UK’s best result to date since their last win in 1997. April 29, 201312 yr "Come Back" : my favourite ballad from used period of time. "La La Love" : overrated and really stupid "Lako Je Sve" : I don't like Ex-Yugo music, but think, that it's nice choice "Je T'adore" : liked in past and I prefer "Congratulations" from 2006.
April 29, 201312 yr "La La Love" : overrated and really stupid Considering the sort of stuff you herald as art, what on EARTH qualifies something as stupid by your standards?! -x- Largely STELLAR by and large thus far Adam although some of these are FAR too low (I'm looking at YOU Marija Magdalena/Den Vilda. And what is the GHASTLY I Love You Mi Vida doing here?!)
April 29, 201312 yr Author And what is the GHASTLY I Love You Mi Vida doing here?!) SUCH a gulity pleasure of mine, I know I shouldn't like it but I do!
April 29, 201312 yr Author 30. | Natasha St-Pier - Je n'ai que mon âme 29. SWEDEN 2001 | Friends - Listen To Your Heartbeat 28. | Fame - Give Me Your Love 27. | Imaani - Where Are You? 26. | Jill Johnson - Kärleken är aGBU1IGC17s Some golden oldies now (well, oldies for most here I’d say!) starting with the brilliant ‘Je n’ai que mon âme’ by French –Canadian Natasha St.Pier. This is so much better than the German ‘Wer liebe lebt’ from the same year. Also from 2001 is Sweden’s Friends, ‘Listen To Your Heartbeat’ was another attempt at recreating the ABBA sound and paid off, gaining them the first of many 5th place finishes in the 2000’s. Fast forward to 2003 and Sweden were at it again, this time with Jessica Andersson and Magnus Bäcklund aka Fame. ‘Give Me Your Love’ once again gave the Swedes a 5th place at Eurovision. Interestingly, there’s a demo of Friends performing ‘Give Me Your Love’ on the bonus disc from the 10 year Melodifestivalen box set. At 27 is the UK’s Imaani, with her 1998 entry ‘Where Are You?’. After winning the previous year with Katrina & The Waves, the UK look set to do the double and they would have done had it not been for Dana International, one of the contest’s most memorable winners. Also from 1998, is the Swedish entry. ‘Kärleken är’ was the last time Sweden sang in their own language at the contest. If you're not already familiar, you should check out Jill Johnson’s 2003 Melodifestivalen entry ‘Crazy In Love’, it’s fantastic!
April 30, 201312 yr Considering the sort of stuff you herald as art, what on EARTH qualifies something as stupid by your standards?! 1. First time, I didn't say that any my favourite ESC song is art. 2. Very annoying dance songs with many "lalala" and without any intresting phrases in lyrics. (Nice sample : Kylie Minogue - "Can't Get Out Of My Head") Yes, in responce on your future comment : Ding Dong part in "Marry Me" is annoying, but we have ... - Baby, I feel like a sinner, skipping dinner to be thinner - I'm your slave and you're my master - I don't think that I know ladies. Who will give you cuter babies :cheer:
May 3, 201312 yr Author 25. FINLAND 2002 | Laura Voutilainen - Addicted To You 24. ICELAND 1999 | Selma - All Out Of Luck 23. | Hera Björk - Je ne sais quoi 22. | Safura - Drip Drop 21. ARMENIA 2008 | Sirusho - Qele Qele u_v6SOo-ck4 Heading to the top 20 starting with Laura Voutilainen and her entry ‘Addicted To You’ for Finland in 2002. A great party song, deserved much more than its 20th place on the night. An Icelandic double next with their 2nd place from 1999, Selma’s ‘All Out Of Luck’. Selma went on to represent Iceland again in 2005 with the also fabulous ‘If I Had Your Love’, but failed to qualify from the semi final. Hera Björk and the euro-tastic ‘Je ne sais quoi’ is at 23. Who could forget that music video? Also from 2010 is Safura and ‘Drip Drop’. One of the favourites to win the contest that year, but drawing first in the running order meant she had to settle for 5th place. And just missing out on a top 20 placing is the Armenian entry from 2008 ‘Qele Qele’. A brilliant piece of ethnic-pop gave Armenia their best placing to date, 4th.
May 5, 201312 yr Author 20. | Antique - (I Would) Die For You 19. | Maria Haukaas Storeng - Hold On Be Strong 18. | Rollo & King - Never Ever Let You Go 17. | AySel & Arash - Always 16. MALTA 2002 | Ira Losco – 7th Wonder 0b3ywwJMZLQ Into the top 20 now starting with Antique and ‘Die For You’. Helena Paparizou’s first attempt at Eurovision resulted in a very successful 3rd place. The song went on to be shamelessly ripped off by Alcazar in 2003 with ‘Not A Sinner, Nor A Saint’. At 19 is ‘Hold On Be Strong’ by Maria Haukaas Storeng. Norway were the only Western European country to come in the top 10 in 2008. ‘Never Ever Let You Go’ was the Danish entry in 2001 and look set to give the country back to back wins. I still don’t know why Estonia was so popular that year, their 2000 and 2002 efforts were so much better and worthier winners. Azerbaijan is probably the most successful country in recent years, coming top 10 with every entry so far. In 2009 they came 3rd with ‘Always’ by AySel & Arash. And at 16 is the Maltese entry from 2002, ‘7th Wonder’. They were completely robbed of their first victory by the totally underwhelming ‘I Wanna’ from Latvia but such is the way at Eurovision.
May 5, 201312 yr Far more important about Die For You is that it represents Shirley Clamp's first (to date) appearance on the Eurovision stage *.*
May 6, 201312 yr "Hold On Be Strong" was in my top 50 for decade. "7th Wonder" is cute, but nothing more. I want to believe, that Bansheen is not your # 1. :)
May 11, 201312 yr Author 15. | Lena - Satellite 14. TURKEY 2003 | Sertab Erener - Everyway That I Can 13. | Lena Philipsson - It Hurts 12. | Carola - Invincible 11. | Euroband - This Is My Life pa4iRh0mN4w Lena, Oh, Lena. From the moment I heard ‘Satellite’ I knew it would take Germany flying up the scoreboard and was thrilled when it stormed to victory in Oslo. ‘Satellite’ is a fantastic modern song and with Lena’s quirky style it was always going to do well. How I hope 2013 has a voting like 2003, the tension! Luckily, Sertab Erener managed to beat that awful t.A.T.u song and give Turkey their first victory. Also thank heavens they changed the song from the awful version which appears on the official CD. Lena Philipsson is at 13 with the catchy ‘It Hurts’, otherwise known as the anal sex song. As soon as someone pointed out to me that the lyrics could be misinterpreted as such, I can’t not help but laugh with the English version, so I usually stick to the original ‘Det gör ont’. Actually, the Swedish version would be a little higher up on my rankings, but she sang in English at Eurovision so that’s the version included here. After winning the contest in 1991 with ‘Fångad av en stormvind’, Swedish diva Carola returned in 2006 with the frantic ‘Invincible’ and managed another top 5 placing. Carola will be the interval act at this year’s final so love her or hate her, you’d better get prepared for the inevitable ‘Främling’ sing-a-long. And just missing out on a top 10 placing is Euroband from Iceland. ‘This Is My Life’ saw Iceland qualify for the final for the first time in 4 years back in 2008 and rightfully so!
