Posted August 22, 200618 yr There was an article in The Stage online yesterday. The Stage I liked the way Will's rebuttal was described. This tradition of talking back to the panel has been a staple of the live talent show for some years now. In many ways, it has its genesis in the first series of Pop Idol, when Will Young stood up to Simon Cowell’s unwarranted denigration with a calm, eloquent rebuttal. And the fact that they say "unwarranted denigration". :D

August 22, 200618 yr Thanks for that Dot, Will started it all off in Pop Idol 1 and like the article says, there's been countless others who've tried it, but nearly all contrived and it shows how tired and run-of-the-mill these sort of shows have become, it's like groundhog day when you tune in.
August 22, 200618 yr This tradition of talking back to the panel has been a staple of the live talent show for some years now. In many ways, it has its genesis in the first series of Pop Idol, when Will Young stood up to Simon Cowell’s unwarranted denigration with a calm, eloquent rebuttal. From that, though, it now seems expected of contestants to argue back regardless — and while that may make good telly, it does nothing for the long-term reputation of the performer. You're right Suggy, and so is The Stage. Apart from PI1 and the first bit of P!2, I've never watched any of these programmes, but from what I've read this "talking back" seems to be endemic now. Trouble is no-one has ever done it with the panache that Will showed. And it shouldn't be forgotten he wasn't just speaking for himself. Also do you remember when they were asked what their moment was (can't remember exactly how it was worded), but Will's reply (and they showed the clip) was not about himself, but how he felt for that youngster who got scathed by SC.
August 22, 200618 yr I've just got round to watching the Light Entertainment programme. Was really chuffed that it was all Will's bits that were used to highlight Pop Idol. :D In the past such clips have always mainly focused on the runner up's stammer.

Can't seem to find anything on D.

They showed clips of LMF in the final 50, Will answering back to Cowel l& of course our favourite winning moment.
August 22, 200618 yr Thanks Dot and TT. It was only if someone had it without too much trouble to put it up, but thanks all the same.
