The Darkness Refutes Label Rumors

August 21, 2006, 4:50 PM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

U.K. glam rock act the Darkness has taken to its Web site to deny rumors it has been dropped by its label, Atlantic Records. In the same statement, the group revealed that frontman Justin Hawkins entered a rehab facility last week to address unspecified substance abuse issues.

"We would however like to make it clear that this emphatically does not signal the end for The Darkness nor are their label Atlantic Records considering 'dropping' them," the site says. "On the contrary, they have taken up their option with the band and are looking forward to releasing the Darkness' third album in early 2007."

The group will hit the studio as soon as Hawkins is ready, according to its site. The new album will be the follow-up to last year's "One Way Ticket to Hell ... and Back," which fizzled at No. 58 on The Billboard 200 and has sold just 91,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

In contrast, the Darkness' 2004 debut, "Permission To Land," has shifted just shy of 700,000 copies to date.

A message from the band

After Justin saw a doctor last week and was recommended to “cancel all professional commitments or work-related activitiesâ€, we had little choice but to cancel the band’s appearance at the Skanderborg Festival in Denmark, something that the band hate to do, but having been out on the road constantly for such a long time and having not had any time off over the past three years, that’s what Justin has decided to do and we are all agreed that his health must come first.

As everybody found out today, Justin has been admitted to a rehabilitation clinic. We would however like to make it clear that this emphatically does not signal the end for The Darkness, nor are their label Atlantic Records considering ‘dropping’ them. On the contrary they have taken up their option with the band and are looking forward to releasing The Darkness' third album in early 2007.

We are not here to comment on Justin’s private life – or anyone else’s for that matter – but he is feeling better already and as soon as he is ready we will be going straight into the studio to begin recording album number 3.

We hope you would join us in wishing Justin well – and it is for you to judge if a platinum album, headlining and co-headlining sold out shows across the UK, Continental Europe and Australia, etc. to an audience of tens of thousands of adoring fans can ever be considered a failure!

well it had to be from billboard.

no one gives a toss over here!!!

I always despised them so much, they should be exterminated from the music scene.

Why stop at exterminating them from only the 'Music Scene'...?

i still enjoy them they are fun ,is it just me was the best single of the 2nd album and is catchy

Mate, if you want a good 'Comedy Rock Act', might I suggest Spinal Tap...? There are actually 'Tap albums available.... Or maybe Bad News, the comedy rock act featuring Ade Edmondson and Rik Mayall...? You could probably find their stuff for very cheap on E-Bay.....

Infintiely more fun than the irony-free Darkness.....

But probably the best 'regular' band for humour and genuinely great song-writing packed full of wit and irony, is the legendary Half Man, Half Biscuit, I defy anyone not to have a good old giggle listening to one of their albums....

the darkness are not a joke band, they never were, i take their music for what it is, good old clasic rock. you claim you all hate them but if you listened to Hazel Eyes, i bet youd think its catchy!!
