Totally, a hit single completely drives sales and attracts casual purchases to a particular album. I know some acts who dont have huge singles can sell albums but in general they are very well established acts or acts that have had previous big selling albums.
Mark is one of those acts that needs a huge hit to sel an album whereas Take That are polar opposites, its a strange comparison really but it seems to be how it is, sadly i can never see Mark having a huge solo hit. I do think he will make another studio album though in the next couple of years, he will probably see how much money he will make out of the next Take That project before he invests. I wonder would Mark ever release a greatest hits, he has enough singles to do one but im not sure if it would attract any casual buyers anymore than his studio albums.
Wow, i can't see him being able to sing the flood or rule the world tbh.

According to his cowriter Ben Mark on twitter, he sang those TT songs in which he was mostly involved in writing.

That does make sense as he did help write them, although i would have thought Up All Night had much more Mark input than Rule the World of The Flood.

Well we saw in Look back don't stare that it was a mostly Gary (writing the actual music and backing track as well as the bridges) and Robbie collab with him writing the verses on the flood. I'm sure mark was involved as well but it was much more Gary and Robbie. He said that he only sung the flood as it means alot to all of them as it was the first song that robbie put vocals on after he rejoined the group - not just 'oh I wrote it so ill sing it'

Rule the world, Gary wrote the chorus after a show in Spain, fed the outline of the song back to them and they all filled on whatever blanks were left (he said it in a behind the scenes interview somewhere during the BW tour when asked about RTW as it was released around the time of tour - bit like love love). Another little piece of information is that someone asked Gary on twitter what his favourite song was that he had written. He answered Back for Good, Patience, and Rule the World

That's all been said before and put on record before - and like Pippa said Gary already told reporters for gmtv back in the day that up all night was mark led song

Impressed with Garys answer on his 3 best songs he has wrote, Rule the World and Patience both fantastic songs and Back for Good was always going to be in the list.

If this 'we all write together now' is to be totally believed Gary really should have said 'co-wrote' in the case of RTW and Patience (although personally I too believe he wrote them totally alone - certainly Patience).

Having said that - I don't think Gary had any input on my two favourite tracks from The Circus (Up All Night and Hold Up A Light). Nor for that matter Shine from Beautiful World.

Not sure about hold up a light but gary played a big role in shine. After all, he wrote the music for it and on the BW blu ray disc he says how himself and mark both toyed with making it longer after it was written.

I think the co-write thing is purely just to even out royalties so everyone gets the same and everyone feels involved regardless if they had written it or not

Shine, Up All Night and Hold Up A Light do appear to have no Gary traits so i too would believe he had no part in those songs. Like Patience, Rule the World etc has all Garys trademarks so they must be sticking to the deal they made when they reformed is that everyone earns equal amounts in terms of the band itself.

I do believe Rule The World was mostly written by Gary but not all of it. I knew I had read somewhere that Mark was responsible for at least part of the song, and after some googling I found this quote from an interview Gary did in 2008.

"...I mention that I love the fireworks moment at the end of the song, when the "All the stars are coming out tonight" coda crashes in and takes it astral. Gary: "I'd love to take credit for that bit, but it was actually Mark"."

I do think it's interesting knowing which member wrote which song, although I can see why they credit everyone. You can often tell who was mainly responsible for a song between Mark and Gary. Beautiful World seems like a more 'Gary' album whereas 'The Circus' seems to have more influence from Mark. I agree that Mark was mainly responsible for Up All Night and Hold Up A Light, as Jamie Norton and Ben Mark are also credited for the songwriting.

Gary is talking about having the fireworks as rule the world closes at the end of the circus shows - not the actual song.

The interview was done before the circus tour, in 2008. I guess they could be talking about a live performance though, I just didn't read it in that context at all. That's what happens when reading a quote without reading the rest of the interview!

Quotes can often throw people completely off what was really said i do agree and this is just an example but a good example in that its not about something bad being said.

Hi, I'm new here and this is my first post. I've read your discussions for a while with great interest and now I've finally signed up :)

I thought I would give my view on the interview and quote about Rule The World you are discussing. I do believe that the quote Laura is referring to is about the actual song, and not about the fireworks at the end of the Circus shows.

I recognized the quote from somewhere, I searched for the interview in my collection of magazines and I found it! The quote is from a long interview with TT in I-D Magazine November 2008. There is a whole paragraph where they are talking about RTW and how it came about. I've typed down a part of the paragraph:

The band had a meeting with the producer and director of the film Stardust with a view to writing a song for it in the morning. They went into the studio in the afternoon and delivered Rule The World to their paymasters at 7.30 PM that same evening. “That song is about triumph”, Gary says now. “I love it when you see it on Sky Sports. I love it when you see it on X Factor. All those glorious moments, where someone wins. It’s perfect for them”. I mention that I love the fireworks moment at the end of the song, when the “ All the stars are coming out tonight” coda crashes in and takes it astral. “I’d love to take credit for that bit, but it was actually Mark. I would, though,” he says delivering his Northern dad wink and a little chuckle, “Happily take credit for it, like.”

Even before you know that this was the pen that scribed the winning finale at the end of Rule The World, it is clear that the rebirth of Take That is as much Mark Owen’s business as it is anyone’s.

My interpretation is that they are talking about the actual song, and not a live performance of it. What do you think?

Hi Cat! Welcome to the forum, it's great to have you here! :-)

Yeah that would appear to be the case then. In fairness though it doesn't really matter who writes these songs as the likes of rtw, shine and the flood are fantastic songs and real TT classics on par with Pray, Never Forget and Back for Good. Having Gary, Mark and Robbie who are 3 great writers in their own right working on material together for us makes us all pretty lucky!

I'm going to see Robbie on Friday with a few of my mates - and as it is the last night at Wembley I'm slightly hoping Gary will appear and sing a couple with him! Looking forward to a great evening either way though!!

p.s Apparently Gary has been working with Robbie and Guy Chambers recently - wonder what they are working on

Hi Cat and i will follow jay727 by welcoming you to the forum and it is is lovely to learn some fresh eyes are watching us. It does appear you are correct from reading the snippet and that it is the song he was talking about.

Thanks so much for your nice welcoming :)

Yeah, it is a real strenght for TT to have such creative forces within the band. But I'm also wondering, because of all the creativity and strong wills, if their minds often clash?

Oh, I didn't know that Gary has been working with Robbie and Guy Chambers. I knew that Robbie and Guy Chambers has been working together again, but I didn't know that also Gary has been involved with them.

Have fun tomorrow at Wembley, jay727! I'm sure it will be good either way :)

Hi Cat62

Big welcome to the forum and wonderful to have another poster here with us, i hope you enjoy it and get stuck into joining in the banter.

Ya i am sure they do clash as they seem to have very different musical tastes going from their solo material and how it soounds, im sure they have their ways of thrashing it all out though in a calm manner!!

  • Author
It would be very natural too if they had a few heated debates in the process of writing and selecting songs, i often think it must be hard for bands to all agree on something when in many cases the musical influences are all total opposites.
