18. CALL ON ME- Eric Prydz (463,000)

http://hitparade.ch/cdimages/eric_prydz-call_on_me_s.jpg

RELEASED: 2004

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 25

One of those songs that is equally well remembered for THAT video as it is for the track itself. Taking Stevie Winwood’s 1982 track “Valerie” and 2004ing it up proved a 5 wk chart topper even returning to No 1 after being knocked off, still a rare feat in the mid 00s, it did however break another unwanted record, registering a paltry 21,749 copies to make No 1.

"Call On Me" = epic song, epic video and I enjoy Steve Winwood's "Valerie" as well. And "It Must Have Been Love" still timeless!
Freestyler just takes me back to the summer of 2000 instantly :D Remember loving it from the moment I heard it, no idea it was Finnish at the time though, I assumed it was some British guy as it sounded almost-but-not-quite like a 2-step garage song which were everywhere back then.

But would a British person write lyrics like "selectors on the radio play us cause we're friendly for ozone... But will your heart go on like Celine Dion, Karma Chameleon?"

Apparently their other hit 'Uprocking Beats' has one of the longest titles without repeated letters.

Looking back, no, but tbh I didn't understand a single word he said at the time other than the title and the word "Yeeesss!" in the chorus :P

Call On Me I really loved at the time, but it's now slightly tainted by the fact that every bloody dance track for the next two years shamelessly copied it which kinda killed the commercial dance scene for a few years, as DJs realised that they could just loop a three-second 80s vocal sample for three minutes to get a hit. Amazing to think that COM actually sounded quite fresh and original at one point!

It Must Have Been Love is as close as a guilty pleasure as they come for me but I'm really not that guilty about loving it.

Ha, hadn't looked at this thread in a few days and Sandstorm and Freestyler both come along at once. If we could have another year like 2000 for Finnish acts that'd be brilliant thx. I do slightly prefer Sandstorm but they are both great.

Miami 2 Ibiza is probably SHM's second best, great to see it so high.

Call On Me  I can't think of any song from 2004 that is better than it. Simple yet fantastic. I had heard nothing like it before. I guess it helped that at the time I had no idea Eric ripped off an 80s song, so I thought the song was completely original  However I still love it now, brings back memories.

And at the time of release, that video was my favourite music video ever!

I wonder how much it would've sold had it been released in today's sales climate. I would guess 900k as it was massive. We'll never know for sure though.

I couldn't believe it when I first found out Bomfunk MC's were Finnish. (I also can't believe that stray apostrophe but yanno).

17. THE SIGN- Ace Of Base (464,000)

RELEASED: 1994

PEAK POSITION: 2

WKS ON CHART: 16

Whilst it was “All That She Wants” that made the top here, the US chose this track to become their sole chart topper. Its success here caused the re-issue of the parent album Happy Nation” in early 94 which finally topped the charts in the summer of that year, the song spent 3 non consecutive weeks at No 2 spot behind Mariah Carey then Doop.

There aren’t many tracks that can sell over 150k in 6 days and not make No 1 but that’s the fate that befell that this track after it went up against “Flat Beat”. A cover of the David Seville 1958 original the appeal of this version somewhat escapes me.

15. ONE OF US- Abba (489,000)

RELEASED: 1981

PEAK POSITION: 3

Abba’s lead single from their final studio album “The Visitors” racked up these considerable sales over the Xmas 81 period when the single was top 3. Indeed it was the final single by the Swedish supergroup before the band became defunct in 1982 and were largely deemed to be very uncool for the remainder of the decade before the 90s saw a volte face in their fortunes.

Thank F*CK for Mr Oizo, even though that was far from my favourite #1 ever. This is such an appalling song and taints this top 20! Similar to Freestyler, I don't even remember hearing much hype around this song before its release and when it showed up at #2 with such a huge sale I was pretty horrified. I wonder why the UK took to it so much when it didn't really smash anywhere else at all?

On a brighter note, The Sign and One Of Us are both 10/10 classics  I've been listening a lot to The Visitors recently and I can't understand how that masterpiece was the album to make them 'uncool' when it's quite the opposite for a pop album. Frida looked pretty awful during that era though, her hair!

17. THE SIGN- Ace Of Base (464,000)

I was only introduced to this masterpiece in January after hearing it covered multiple times in Pitch Perfect! It's glorious, amazing that it's made it so high on here :D

I haven't tried listening to Witch Doctor in so many years, it's just so awful. Mr Oizo's Flat Beat on the other hand (I love it!) Obviously that won't be in the countdown as he is French.
I always thought The Sign got stuck behind Things Can Only Get Better.

I didn't "get" it either. However, when my neice made her first holy communion in 2000, my sister had the party back at her house. Now 43 pretty much was the soundtrack for the entire afternoon and this, Daphne & Celeste and Lolly was loved by everyone there...under the age of 8.

So the reason why this did so well is because children liked it. :(

On a much happier note, 'The Sign'. Another slice of Eurotastic pop from Ace Of Base.

Fortunately we haven't had a hit in years that has been liked by only children (of course there have been songs like What Makes You Beautiful, Baby and Gangnam Style which appeal to children, but teens and some adults like it too)

I'm hoping for some good songs in the top 15.

...but 'Gangnam Style' is genius. Probably the only novelty song in recent times that appealed to people regardless of age (and is still a guaranteed dancefloor filler at any party you go to).

I just can't compare PSY to The Cartoonz. :D

I agree! I was just suggesting that in recent times we've had songs that appeal to many young people without being 'just for children' in the way that Witch Doctor, Can We Fix It, Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh etc. are - which is a good thing.
