16.01.1965 : Seekers - I'll Never Find Another You (1 week # 1)

http://daleblanshan.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/SeekersRD.jpg

Seekers are an Australian quartet folk music-influenced pop music group which was originally formed in Melbourne in 1962. They were the first Australian popular music group to achieve major chart and sales success in United Kingdom and United States. They were popular during the 1960s with their best-known configuration as: Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley.

It was Seekers' first UK-released single, and was the best selling single of 1965 in United Kingdom. The song was also highly popular in United States, reaching peaks of #4 pop and #2 easy listening in Billboard magazine surveys.

The track was written and produced by Tom Springfield who was also responsible for most of the band's subsequent hits. The tune received a 1967 US revival as a country music #1 by Sonny James.

Hi Alex, a fab 1964, 11 of the 15 are genuine pop classics, and 1965 is starting off well too. By an amazing co-incidence I went to see the original line-up of the Seekers last week but didn't think there would be any interest on here in my review. So, just for you, here it is!

The Seekers Live at Bournemouth International Centre May 23rd 2014

A 50th anniversary tour. I think it’s worth stressing that this is the original complete line-up 50 years on from topping the UK charts and hobnobbing with the Beatles and The Stones at awards ceremonies, concerts and TV. The Seekers were big pop stars for 3 or 4 years, hopping over from Australia with their folkpop harmonies on a boat and becoming instantly successfully. Judith Durham had a brain haemorrhage last year, when they were due to tour in the UK, so it’s fabulous to see her and the group looking well and sounding great, Judith’s voice is still pure.

With videoed hello’s from Olivia (saw her on the same stage a couple of years back), Cliff and The Wiggles (honestly! they have covered some of their hits), it was a runthrough the big hits, pretty much, with 60‘s nostalgic film as a backdrop. I’ll be honest, I was probably among the youngest there, the audience very much not of working age, and as an enthusiastic fan commented, the queues for the toilet were quite long but what can you do when you gotta go you gotta go! It’s a shame that the sweet, good-living sounds of the Seekers, and the friendly and thoughtful fans, aren’t remotely in vogue or referred to, given there’s a bit of a folk revival going on and the musical influences on the Seekers wouldn’t be out of place being mentioned by young acts.

I enjoyed the run down memory lane, for me, as their songs were very famous in the 60’s and 70’s, and several had kiddie-appeal (and still do via the Wiggles), it was all very engaging, and it was good to hear some I’d not heard for 40-odd years and hadn’t realised I knew. I was too young to be fan as such at the time (I was a New Seekers fan), but there were also some good new ones (to me) that came across well, so a nice mix. Judith, especially, sounds great and a nice way to say thank you and goodbye to their fans.

My top 10 tracks, in order:

The Carnival Is Over

Georgy Girl

I’ll Never Find Another You

A World Of Our Own

Morningtown Ride

Someday, One Day

Myra

The Olive Tree

Just A Closer Walk With Thee

Red Rubber Ball

23.01.1965 : Sue Thompson - Paper Tiger (3 weeks # 1)

http://www.varesesarabande.com/media/03/a207918130d822e2c8b83b_m.jpg

Sue Thompson is an American pop and country music singer. She is best known for the million selling hits "Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)" and "Norman", both pop hits in the 1960s.

"Paper Tiger" in 1965 was her last Top 30 hit in United States and reached # 30 in United Kingdom.

In the late 1960s, she went back to country music and released the album "This Is Sue Thompson Country" in 1969. In 1971 she worked with country music singer Don Gibson on some albums, and they had minor hits with "I Think They Call It Love," "Good Old Fashioned Country Love," and "Oh, How Love Changes."

13.02.1965 : Babbity Blue - Don't Make Me (Fall In Love With You) (3 weeks # 1)

http://www.audiophileusa.com/covers400water/83630.jpg

Babbity Blue was actually born as Barbara Chalk but renamed by her managers after she attended an audition for their company at the age of seventeen. Unlike many of her contemporaries she never established herself as a touring act, but instead relied on television and radio exposure to bring her records to the public's attention.

Her first single "Don't Make Me (Fall In Love With You)" reached # 48 in UK. Obviously the gambit failed, and after her follow-up single "Don't Hurt Me" completely failed to register she disappeared from sight. Two decades after this song also was released on "Girl Zone" compilation with some 60s pop stars (Lulu, Kathy Kirby, Marianne Faithfull).

06.03.1965 : Kathy Kirby - I Belong (7 weeks # 1)

http://www.mattmonro.com/bitmapmurph/kathy_kirby/kathy1.jpg

"I Belong" was the United Kingdom' entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1965 held in Naples at March 21, 1965. By the close of voting, it had received 26 points, placing it 2nd from 18 participants.

Performed in English by Kathy Kirby, the song is sung from the perspective of a woman who express your love by someone, she has loved for the first time in her life: "But now my heart has recovered. From past affairs that turned wrong. All my dreams are uncovered. I belong, I belong, I belong"

Eurovision classic. One from the best British songs in this song contest. Sad, that she was a ESC participant in one year with France Gall. The single wasn't successful in UK with a peak position at # 36.

24.04.1965 : Jackie Trent - Where Are You Now, My Love ? (3 weeks # 1)

http://www.jackietrent.com/communities/2/004/008/207/552/images/4537600613_265x267.jpg

Jackie Trent is an English singer-songwriter and actress. Her first stage appearance was as a ten-year-old ingenue in the pantomime "Babes In The Wood", but her primary interest was a career in pop music. Her first single, "Pick Up the Pieces", was released in 1962, but it was not until PYE Records record labels and three years later that she scored her first hit, "Where Are You Now" which was featured in the popular TV series "It's Dark Outside" and was written by Tony Hatch & Trent, who at that time were involved in a successful professional collaboration with Petula Clark.

"Where Are You Now" reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in May 1965, topping the chart for one week. The song was written and recorded in just four days after Tony Hatch was asked by Granada TV to produce a song for the female lead in the programme to be seen on screen playing to herself. The lyrics were written by Jackie Trent in Christmas 1964, just before she headed off to South Africa on a three month tour. When the song first hit the screen, people contacted TV Times to ask where they could get it and the rush was on to get it into the shops. The song went to number one in May 1965, knocking the Beatles "Ticket to Ride" off number one.

15.05.1965 : Sandie Shaw - Long Live Love (3 weeks # 1)

http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/224x224/p01bqdy7.jpg

"Long Live Love" is a Chris Andrews composition which, in 1965, gained Sandie Shaw the second of her three UK number one hit singles and second # 1 in my vintage charts.

Shaw was sufficiently confident in the hit potential of the buoyant "Long Live Love" as to turn down the chance to record "It's Not Unusual", allowing the song to be given to Tom Jones and become his first hit. "Long Live Love" did spend three weeks at No 1 in the UK in June 1965, also giving Shaw a No 1 hit in Ireland and New Zealand. A Top Ten hit in Netherlands (# 7) and Norway (# 8), "Long Live Love" was also a hit in Australia (# 12) and Belgium, reaching # 15 on the latter territory's Dutch language chart.

In United States "Long Live Love" received enough regional attention to return Shaw to the Billboard Hot 100 for the third and last time, with # 97 peak.

05.06.1965 : Cadets & Eileen Reid - Jealous Heart (4 weeks # 1)

http://www.irishshowbandalbum.com/resources/cad38.jpg

Formed in Dublin in 1962, the Cadets quickly became one of the most popular showbands - ensembles of usually six people or more, doing dance-oriented American-style music, including rock & roll, country, R&B, and soul - in the Irish capitol. Their success was partly a reflection of the popularity of their lead singer, Eileen Reid, whose powerful voice and effective intonation, coupled with good looks topped off with a huge beehive hairdo, made her one of the most popular young singers in the country.

They were initially signed by Decca Records but switched to the Pye label soon after their first single, "Hello Trouble," faltered. With Pye they enjoyed a string of Irish hits, hitting number one with their version of the Jim Reeves song "Fallen Star," and following it up with another smash, "I Gave My Wedding Dress Away" - the Cadets also charted a few records in England (include "Jealous Heart" at # 42) and were among the few Irish showbands to get featured on British television, including "Thank Your Lucky Stars".

The group, whose repertory favored country songs, played on Johnny Cash's and June Carter Cash's late- 1963 tour of Ireland, and they rated an introduction to the Beatles when they toured Ireland that same year. They even managed to tour America briefly in 1964, and had their own radio show in Dublin. The Cadets lasted until 1970, two years after Reid's exit following her marriage to Jimmy Day.

03.07.1965 : Jackie Trent - When The Summertime Is Over (5 weeks # 1)

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/a/1436fd406c9963cebee2dfca48bc36a1/4181355.jpg

Single was released in July 1965, written by Tony Hatch and follow up to Jackie's no 1 hit "Where are you now", this song reached only # 39 in UK chart.

Petula Clark's 1966 hit, "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love" was inspired by the ongoing affair between Trent and Hatch, and they subsequently went public with their relationship. A year later, they were married in Kensington, London.

Although she recorded several singles and albums, both as a solo artist and in tandem with her husband, Trent was more successful as a songwriter rather than a singer. In addition to their compositions for Clark, over the years she and Hatch wrote a wealth of material for other artists, including Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones, Nancy Wilson, Des O'Connor, Val Doonican, Vikki Carr, and Dean Martin.

18.09.1965 : Sonny And Cher - I Got You Babe (1 week # 1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fb/SonnyAndCherIGotYouBabeFrench7InchSingleCover.jpg

Sonny Bono, a songwriter and record producer for Phil Spector, wrote the lyrics to and composed the music of the song for himself and his then-wife, Cher, late at night in their basement.

"I Got You Babe" became the duo's biggest single, their signature song, and a defining recording of the 60s decade. In August 1965, the single spent three weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in United States, where it sold more than 1 million copies and was certified Platinum. The duo's single also reached #1 in United Kingdom where it sold 1,200,000 copies and was subsequently included on their first album "Look at Us".

This single became a huge hit in the most world charts (# 1 in Canada, # 2 in Ireland, # 3 in Australia and Germany, # 4 in Netherlands and Sweden, # 6 in Austria and Norway)

23.10.1965 : Jody Miller - Home Of The Brave (2 weeks # 1)

http://www.macromusic.com/JodyMiller/graphics/jody3.jpg

Jody Miller is an American country music singer. She was born in Phoenix and raised in Oklahoma. Discovered by actor Dale Robertson, she began her career in the early 1960s as a folk/pop singer, singing in the Los Angeles area and appearing on Tom Paxton's television series. She released her first album on Capitol Records in 1964 and had a modest pop hit that year with "He Walks Like a Man".

In 1965, she participated in the San Remo Festival as a team companion of Pino Donaggio. Since the Festival was created as a composers' competition, Miller and Donaggio presented differently arranged versions of the entry "Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te)". The song came in on # 7 and was only a moderate hit until Dusty Springfield recorded an English version in 1966 which was eventually released as "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". Also in 1965, Jody Miller released an answer record to Roger Miller's blockbuster hit "King of the Road", titled "Queen of the House" (which became her signature hit, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number 5 on the country singles chart). Miller won the Grammy award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the song in 1966.

Miller also scored a second top 40 pop hit that year with "Home of the Brave", a No. 25 Hot 100 hit (and # 49 in UK) that was historically significant for tackling the issue of noncomformity and tolerance. Ahead of its time, its theme prevented it from making any headway on the more conservative country charts of 1965. By the mid 1960s, Miller became a pioneer crossover female vocalist, opening the doors for Linda Ronstadt, Anne Murray, Olivia Newton-John and others as a pop singer recording a strong country influence and finding success in both genres.

Good review, John.

Sad, that there is not many fans of retro music, but at last there are you and me and we always can talk about good old-fashioned music.

I think 60s music was good, maybe not so awesome as in 70s decade and there is not many artists as in 80s and 90s, but many classics were recorded 45-50 years ago and sounds great today. 60s were really underrated in my eyes before. That's why I love to be a gold digger of retro music.

John, who is your favourite female singer from 60s ? Dusty, Sandie, Lulu, Cilla or maybe anybody else ?

Thanks Alex, my fave female 60's singer is Dusty. Then Sandie, then Cilla, then Lulu. Lulu though got better as she got older in later decades. At the time Mary Hopkin as well, but she only really had 2 singles in the 60's. When I was very little (6 years old) Kathy Kirby was my fave, and Helen Shapiro. In later years I grew to love Mama Cass, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick from the 60's. B-)

06.11.1965 : Petula Clark - You're The One (5 weeks # 1)

http://www.petulaclark.net/discography/cd2003/soldore642.jpg

"You're the One" is a song by Petula Clark. It was later also included on the 1965 album "I Know a Place". Written by Clark with her regular songwriter and record producer Tony Hatch, "You're the One" was a Top 30 hit in the UK Singles chart for Clark, but was more successful as a Top Ten US single release by The Vogues.

Petula Clark thus describes the genesis of "You're the One": "we [Clark and Tony Hatch] were making yet another LP, and that's like twelve or thirteen songs. He'd written twelve, and he said, 'Listen, I haven't got a number thirteen in me at all. Write something.' And I said, 'Okay. I'll try.' And I wrote the melody of 'You're the One.' And he wrote the lyric."

Originally there were no plans to issue a follow-up to the "I Know a Place" single off its parent album; instead two newly recorded Petula Clark singles were consecutively released: "You'd Better Come Home" and "Round Every Corner" both of which barely made the UK Top 50. Both singles were substantially more successful in the US where each neared the Top 20 in respectively the summer and autumn of 1965.

The burgeoning success of the Vogues' "You're the One" had alerted Petula Clark's UK label "Pye Records" to the track's hit potential with Pye rush releasing Clark's own version as a single which entered the UK chart in November 1965 and peaked at #23.

Rocky Sharpe and the Replays remade "You're the One" on their 1981 album release "Come On Let's Go".
