Daily FHTE Blog: Keep Calm and Carry On! - Lee Menzies (Producer)

22 October 2013 at 22:13

Last night there were some Pearl Harbor veterans watching the show. They loved and were moved by the production and are coming back on Thursday to see it again. That reaction makes it all worthwhile.

This week we welcome the family of the late James Jones, whose great novel we have adapted. Kaylie and Eyrna Jones also watched last night’s performance, James’ daughter and granddaughter respectively, who both told us how He would have massively approved of our production. We tell the story of these people, and we tell it well.

As the producer of a new show like this, part of my job is to balance the artistic and commercial demands of the creative team and my investors. It can sometimes feel like a losing battle, but you must never give up. The most useful contribution I can make is to keep calm and carry on, and make damned sure everyone else does the same.

As well as our Opening Night, another major event tomorrow is the christening of Prince George. We have a song in Eternity called The Boys of '41 so let us all send our good wishes to the boy of '13.

Opening night. Break a leg to all the cast. Hope it goes well.

Was listening to radio 2 just after 11am news and Michael Ball was presenting.

He had been to the opening night and played 'fame' for them, wishing them to live on forever and thanks for the great night.

I was delighted and can't wait to go again to see the changes.

Neither can I. It's quite something to have a song written for you in your range 2/3rds through the preview. Geat for Darius
wonder what the song is like - I thought the songs D had to sing ddint show off his voice asd they were soft love ones on the whole..the duet was great, he needed more like that,
Just got back from seeing FHTE last night. Must say I was really impressed. I wasn't quite sure what to expect after reading various comments but I thought it was great. Loved the music and choreography, some really catchy numbers there and yes, definitely shades of Les Mis as some of the critics say. Loved Darius performance but I felt he's got even more to give once the show 'settles in'. Disappointed to see quite a few empty seats and as Darius said, some people didn't return for the 2nd half for what ever reason. Would love to go back in a couple of months and see how the show has progressed because I feel it's going to improve with age. Just hope it gets a chance. Sue

Thanks Sue

Sorry PIP, just put it on facebook as I didn't know you had it here. I think quite a lot will like the photo with it

Happenstance!

Guess what's just been on the telly - the pop idol spat between Simon and Pete over Darius's Let's Face the Music and Dance where Pete said he sang it JUST LIKE Nat King Cole and accused Simon of only wanting the younger ones as his Pop Idols, not wanting anyone over 22.

There were in fact only 2 younger singers than Darius who was just 21...............Zoe and Gareth. It's just Darius has always looked more mature than his age.

I think Darius sounds like Nat king cole..glad to hear others say it in reviews

do we need a pinned review thread?

just seen this..

Tim Rice's timescale of the production of 'From Here To Eternity' from today's Daily Mail

MAY 2013

Amazingly, we’ve got the loot. And today I think we may have found our Milt Warden – the last of our five main roles to be filled. We’ve auditioned dozens for the role which was played by Burt Lancaster in the film, and then Darius Campbell showed up. He was terrific; a fine singer and actor, tall with great presence, which the powerful figure of Warden needs.

Some might remember him as Darius Danesh. He reached the finals of both Popstars and Pop Idol 12 years ago and in 2010 was the winner of Popstar To Operastar.

Darius’s love interest is Karen Holmes, his commanding officer’s neglected wife, played by Rebecca Thornhill – Deborah Kerr in the film. The second love story is played out between troubled Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt (Robert Lonsdale) and escort girl Lorene (Siubhan Harrison). I first met Darius about a decade ago when he was singing at a James Bond party I attended.

I was there as Pussy Galore (not a good career move) and we’d had a brief chat which he tactfully claimed to remember. Meanwhile some of the music from the show is already being recorded; I played some of the songs to my neighbour Michael Ball and to the wonderful Clare Teal – Michael has recorded one called Fight The Fight on his new album and Clare Another Language on hers
