Similar backing track to Leona's Run, fantastic lead single. Very anthemic and epic sounding, hope it's big for her and nice to see her not pushing indie covers this time around.

I agree wth gooddelta. It reminds me of "Run" with the backing track. It also reminds me of One Republic's "Stop And Stare".

'Wings" sounds so epic..I don't like so much the videoclip though. I believe that she will have her first Top 10 hit with this. The hype from "Skinny Love" still exist..

Derivative isn't a bad thing per se. Especially not when the original product is amazing.

I dont agree. A certain amount of time has to pass between a certain sound before it becomes acceptable/tolerable to use it again. My brain just rejects something so unimaginative. Does Birdy not say to herself "This sounds awfully like Run - I think I'd rather do something a little more individual". Obviously not.

Well clearly not, but nor do I think she should do. Not all music needs to re-invent the wheel, sometimes just making good music you love/other people will love is enough. I know it is for me. It's basically why I prefer Katy Perry to Lady Gaga.

I prefer to not try and sound like whatever is current or recent. Like the way Marina started sounding like everyone else on her second album. It completely lacks integrity and any artistic value when you do that. Fair enough, if you want to sell records. But I lose respect for people when they go for the obvious. Cristina Aguilera's use of Timbaland was another poor choice of sound.

 

It doesn't interest me in the slightest.

 

It's perfectly fine for other people to like it, I suppose. I just don't understand it, personally. I don't think many people can re-invent the wheel and don't mind old styles coming back into fashion at all - Amy Winehouse, Bloc Party, Chase and Status, for example all drew off older sounds from various eras and somehow made them vital again. It just seems like a recent sound is too easy - I prefer artists to have more appreciation for historical sounds and the roots of their sound, rather than going for something that was recently popular.

 

Wings is now in the UK iTunes top 10! So pleased that this underrated song is finally getting more success :cheer:

I agree with a comment in the chart show thread that this sounds like an awful lot like 'Stop & Stare'! It would explain a lot as this track was co-written by Ryan too (or so someone else said! :heehee:) I like it. It's nice enough.

Ooh I can't say I ever thought of that comparison myself, it reminds me more of Leona's version of 'Run' than anything - but of course Ryan had nothing to do with that. You're right Ryan did co-write and co-produce this! :wub: It was very much a grower for me, it passed me by when it was first released and then eventually I got into it - maybe I saw it in a 59p offer and tried listening to it again and after a few more listens it just completely clicked. It deserves to be one of the modern day classic ballads/mid-tempos for me like Leona's 'Run' or 'Someone Like You' - those types of timeless classics.

 

I wouldn't be surprised to see 'Wings' turn up very often in the X Factor this year now, considering auditions are supposed to be in a couple of weeks (I think?) so this advert will be perfect timing for people to want to audition with it.

I expect it'll be the winner's single this year?

I always loved this track and was surprised it never really took off. I thought it would get a second wind one day, the acoustic version is gorgeous too, I think I prefer it to the original :o
