I have heard (many times) that nana Moskouri is officially the biggest selling female, with over 300 million records sold since she began in the 1960's. She is of Greek origin and has been successful throughout Asia and Europe, but never in the UK/US. The most recent confirmation was when she appeared on half time at eurovision

Mariah's main sales come from the US though, even TEOM only did 3 million outside the US. I'm gonna hazzard a guess at 2 million max for Glitter.

Don't forget Aisa, some of her albums, namely Glitter, Merry Christmas and 1s were big over there

but sales arent as big is asia, platinum can be as little as 20K in some countries ebcause of piracy

Woah! That's little ! But Glitter was quite a big seller in these countries:

US: 1 million

Brazil: 452,000

Japan: 262,000

China: 800,000

Europe: 600,000

that's where glitter got most of its sales!

I really just can't except that Mariah has sold more than Madonna. The thought leaves a bad taste in my mouth! Mariah isn't regarded as the queen of pop. Madonna is, and that's because of sales. yes? I hope so. lol

2 very different persona's.

Madonna is regarded as the Queen of Pop because she's been around longer and she's always done poppy music and because she's outlasted many, many artists.

Mariah Carey is the VOICE, different from Madonna because she has a signifficantly better voice than Madonna, but Madonna can dance better than Mariah.

And no it's not because of sales. ^_^

I always wonder why record companies cant just get together to make the list so all the arguments about it end. I think the top 5 would be

1| Nana Mouskouri

2| Madonna

3| Celine Dion

4| Mariah Carey

5| Barbara Striesand?

Ive heard of another woman from some Asian country and she is claiming to have sold over 250 mil. records. Although that wouldn't effect Nana, it would bump the rest down a place. I know that no Japanese female are challenging for this title, the 2 biggest are Utada Hikaru and Ayumi, who are both on around 48 million records; although i wouldnt be surprised if somebody from China who we havent heard of could be trying for a spot on the list.

I have no idea, how many as Whitney sold?
I think she's between 110-120 million, although the most precise ive heard is 114 million,

wo actually, I just checked Wikpedia and it says

Houston has sold over 160 million albums and 70 million singles worldwide totaling 230 million records

but wouldnt that mean she has sold more than Mariah? Im sure Whitney hasn't sold more than Mariah though

Hmmm i'm not sure.

this subject is so confusing :(

ok, lets add whitney to the list

so we have

Nana: 300 million

Madonna: 250 million

Whitney: 230 Million

Celine: 185 Million

Mariah: 170 Million

we also have the un named asian woman, Barabara streisand but I dont know how much she has sold, but this should probably be the top 7?

Oh and MEGA INFLATION for Madonna, not a cats chance in HELL has she sold 250m. ;)
ooh really? I heard somewhere that she'd done 155 million, but then somewhere else say 200, and then theres the 250 figure, but i thought that it must be inflated somewhere along the line. So does this mean that Madonna has sold less than Celine/Mariah?

No, Madge has sold over 200 million albums apperently, not sure about singles

The Wikipedia list seems pretty accurate since they have done away with the ridiculously high sales figures -_-
