To mark five years since I Kissed A Girl hit Number 1, we count down Katy’s biggest sellers on the Official Singles Chart.

She kissed a girl and she liked it, and we loved her! It’s hard to believe its five years since Katy Perry’s breakthrough hit I Kissed A Girl smashed its way to the top of the Official Singles Chart. The controversial lusty love letter to lip balm managed to stay at Number 1 for five weeks, setting the tone for a stellar career that would see Katy Perry a regular fixture on the charts – and in the tabloids.

But which KP classic is the biggest of them all? Katy has appeared on 14 Official Singles Chart Top 40 hits, and she’s reached the summit three times. Her chart-toppers are the afore-mentioned I Kissed A Girl, 2010’s California Gurls and Part Of Me from 2012. Did any of those manage to be her top-seller?

Well the answer to that is, um, no. Katy’s biggest selling single didn’t make it to Number 1 at all, despite being a karaoke staple and the empowering anthem for anyone who’s felt rather less than sparkling. Katy Perry’s top selling single in the UK is the mighty Firework, which may have only fizzed its way to Number 3 in October 2010, but has shined brighter than all Katy’s other hits in the long run.

The sparky track has sold almost 955,000 copies in the UK since its release three years ago, and is way ahead of the hit that comes in second – California Gurls, the lead single for the Teenage Dream album, itself a Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart.

That unforgettable debut I Kissed A Girl has to settle for fourth place with 676,000 copies, just behind its follow-up single Hot N Cold. Only 400 copies separate them – can I Kissed A Girl smooch its way past to make it into the Top 3?

Katy’s collaboration with Colorado electropoppers 3OH!3 also did pretty well for Katy. Starstrukk is her most successful track as a featured artist, shifting 580,000 units and coming in at 5 on her list of big sellers. Another featured track makes the Top 10, with the Timbaland collaboration If We Meet Again selling 412,000 to make it to 9.

Big Katy tracks that just miss her Top 10 sellers include Wide Awake at 11 – it reached Number 9 in April 2012 and has sold 325,000 copies. Just behind it is the boohoo-worthy The One That Got Away, which is almost at the 325K mark.

Firework’s sales tally just goes to show that it’s not always the Number 1s that are the biggest songs. All eyes are now on the track to see whether it will pass the 1 million mark. Will Firework be Katy Perry’s ticket into the Million Sellers’ Club? And when? Keep your eyes on the prize – right here, in other words – for all the latest updates.

Meanwhile, Katy’s ready to add some more hits to her list – her brand new single Roar is out 8 September. Can it be her fourth chart-topper?

Buzzjack always seems to be slower off the mark with these, than Haven... ;)

Not really, I posted in the Katy Perry forum a couple of hours ago! :D

OK, replace 'Buzzjack' with 'Chart Chat'... :P

5 400kers from one album. Fantastic. 'Roar' will smash and be in her top 5 for sure.

I wish we had sales for the other two though.

No surprises at Firework being #1 :P I do actually prefer California Gurls but Firework is worthy of #1 too. Ouch at Part of Me not doing that well despite being a #1, her #9 single outsold it!

I didn't realise Hot N' Cold and I Kissed A Girl were so close :o I would've thought the former had an easy lead as it's had more longevity than IKAG and it's more radio friendly.

Poor Waking Up In Vegas and Thinking of You too irrelevant for this list :P

No 'Thinking Of You'. :( I doubt it has sold 100k, let alone 300k. :lol: Great sales for a #18 hit in TOTGA. Ouch at her #9 out-selling her #1 but deservedly so.
It's a shame she didn't release Wide Awake first, it would've done so much better than Part of Me if it had been pre-rerelease.
'Hot and Cold' and 'I Kissed a Girl' have always seemed to be close in recent years, happy that the former is just ahead though. I'd rather see 'The One That Got Away' at number one it was blatantly obvious that it wouldn't be. 325k is a fantastic total for it considering it only made #18! :o

'The One That Got Away' has sold STUPIDLY well for a song that "only" peaked at number 18 and was the 6th single from a near million (maybe it was over? :unsure:) selling album! INSANE. My favourite thing she's ever released/recorded though. :wub:

'If We Ever Meet Again' deserves to be swapped with 'Starstrukk'. Both so good, but IWEMA is definitely the superior of the two, imo.

Here are some sales taken from the end of year charts.

CALIFORNIA GIRLS (#1, 2010, 7th best seller of year) 648,400

TEENAGE DREAM (#2, 2010, 32nd) 408,200

ET (#3, 2011, 36th) 418,800

LAST FRIDAY NIGHT (TGIF) (#9, 2011, 45th) 358,100

PART OF ME (#1, 2012, 55th) 336,300

WAKING UP IN VEGAS (#19, 2009, 138th) 129,000

THINKING OF YOU (#27, 2009, 208th) 76,000

Obviously all these singles, especially Teenage Dream, will have sold additional copies beyond the year in which they appeared in the top 200 (top 250 for 2009) year end singles.

Estimated sales for all 14 releases

Thanks to Shireblogger from Haven for the following post:

Here are my estimates for the singles where the OCC didn't provide a number.

[Figures in brackets refer to position and sales in October 2011, when there was a Katy Perry Top 10 broadcast on some of the Music TV channels].

1 [1] . Katy Perry = Firework :: 955k [750k]

2 [2] . Katy Perry ft Snoop Dogg = California Gurls :: 785k [720k]

3 [3] . Katy Perry = I Kissed A Girl :: 677k [640k]

4 [4] . Katy Perry = Hot'n'Cold :: 676k [625k]

5 [5] . Katy Perry [3Oh!3 ft] = Starstrukk :: 580k [555k]

6 [6] . Katy Perry = Teenage Dream :: 540k [475k]

7 [8] . Katy Perry ft Kanye West = ET :: 480k [380k]

8 [9] . Katy Perry = Last Friday Night :: 430k [300k]

9 [7] . Katy Perry [Timbaland ft] = If We Ever Meet Again :: 412k [385k]

10 . Katy Perry = Part Of Me :: 355k

11 . Katy Perry = Wide Awake :: 325k

12 . Katy Perry = The One That Got Away :: 324k [55k]

13 [10] . Katy Perry = Waking Up In Vegas :: 180k [170k]

14 [11] . Katy Perry = Thinking Of You :: 105k

Katy Perry's career total is about 6,825,000 plus album tracks, so probably somewhere just short of 7,000,000.

To think that 'What About Us' by The Saturdays and 'Need U' by Duke Dumont got to #1 this year (in a higher sales climate) and have *only* sold 50k more than TOTGA is really astonishing. I remember TOTGA always lingering around the lower top 20 or just outside throughout the end of 2011. That and 'Love On Top' had really frustrating iTunes runs.

But 'I Kissed a Girl' is her signature hit!!!!11

I mean, the figures show that even 'Hot n Cold' has had more longevity.

It is still one of her signature hits. This debate has been done to death now. It's found its way into pop culture, everyone remembers it blah blah blah.
