Ireland: RTE evaluates various options for Eurovision 2014

RTE, the Irish national broadcaster has informed esctoday.com that it is currently evaluating various different options and formats for their forthcoming Eurovision national selection.

Last July RTE confirmed to esctoday.com its participation at 2014 Eurovision Song Contest.

RTE is currently working very hard in order to work out the best formula to select the 2014 Irish Eurovision entry.

It is yet unclear what format or mechanism the Irish broadcaster will opt for in order to select their 2014 Eurovision entry. Esctoday has learned that RTE has many cards on the table: the 5 mentor mechanism, Eurosong on the Late Late Show, an open national final allowing all artists to apply, etc. RTE might opt for a former mechanism or might even come up with something totally new and innovative.

RTE has told esctoday.com that it will release further details regarding its plans for Eurovision 2014 towards the end of October.

Ireland has won the Eurovision Song Contest a total of 7 times ( 1971,1981,1987, 1992,1993, 1994,1996) and is the country that has won the event the most times.

Ireland holds many Eurovision records: The Emerald Isle is also the only country that has won the contest 3 years in a row ( 1992, 1993, 1994) and has hosted it 3 years in row too ( 1992, 1993, 1994). Eire is also the country that has won the event twice with the same singer, Johnny Logan (1980 and 1987).

If they INSIST on sticking with the current format then they need to get rid of all the dead wood (basically get rid of everybody currently involved). The Eurosong format is tedious and showcases five songs, one of which is usually alright while the others are utter dirge. Any time we've actually had an open national final, there's usually at least two excellent songs to choose from and that was the format we used throughout the 90s and we got the best results back then. I don't know why they're so intent on making no effort even after they said hosting wouldn't be an issue. HOW they'll ever pay for it is beyond me but apparently they can. Here's hoping we have an NF to be excited about.

Patricia Roe - "Don't Hold On"

Eoghan Quigg - "The Movie Song"

Can-linn - "Heartbeat"

Andrew Mann - "Be Mine"

Laura O’Neill - "You Don't Remember Me"

Eoghan! Songs will be played for the first time on Irish radio tomorrow.

Is this the same Patricia Roe of "If You Changed Your Mind" fame? :o Andrew Mann went on to do The Voice last year and did reasonably well so it's good that he's trying Eurosong again. But if his song is anything like 'Middle Of The Dancefloor' then can we not go there.

Eoghan Quigg tho. :nocheer:

Eoghan Quigg entering with a song called "The Movie Song" fills me with despair.

Patricia Hoe. There, I said it :D

'Don't Hold On' seems to be a pretty weird title if taken without context

These songs are apparently being played now. From what I've read on other forums, people are pleasantly surprised by Eoghan's song!

Heartbeat is my favourite of the five songs. The movie song isn't too bad but I doubt I'd be able to get behind it the same way as with Heartbeat.

I've listened to Eoghan's song and it's pretty good! If it got selected then I could see it going top half in the final, 'Me & My Guitar' did very well and 'The Movie Song' is definitely has a similar sound to that.

Patricia Roe - "Don't Hold On" / She's still stuck in 1993 it seems. :( Nice ballad but terribly predictable. DNQ for sure.

Eoghan Quigg - "The Movie Song" / NICE but could I really get behind this? It's all very 'young' and could do kind of well but it also risks being a bit lost for being terribly average-sounding.

Can-linn - "Heartbeat" / I KINDA LOVE THIS. Kasey was so horrendous last year that I didn't have any expectations at all but it's kinda catchy? Loving the trad bits throughout. Not sure how well it would do in Eurovision though.

Andrew Mann - "Be Mine" / NO. Please no.

Laura O’Neill - "You Don't Remember Me" / This is actually REALLY nice. Not a Eurovision entry at all but very pleasant and she can sing.

Not a BAD NF at all. Certainly better than a few previous years. Can-linn is the best there but I fear for Kasey's VOX. Remember last year? Hot mess. </3

Eoghan Quigg is the likely entry here if not i think Can Linn will do it. No Eurovision 2015 from Ireland based on any of the songs.

It'll be between Eoghan and Can-Linn+Kasey, I think. The televoting will probably have these two top two, but the regional juries might throw a spanner in the works, as per. Regional juries are: Cork, Limerick, Galway, Sligo, and Dublin.

Apparently 'Heartbeat' has Irish dancing in it? :nocheer:

Leona Daly, where r u? :(

If nothing else the Irish dancing should get some extra votes.

It's exciting watching another country's national final......but when you watch your own country's national final, while it is entertaining....it's a bit like watching someone spinning plates on sticks.

Hoping for a Can Linn win.

Yeah there's something slightly nerve wracking about watching your own NF! Johnny Logan is performing tonight. Christ. :(
I'm watching this, I've only heard Eoghan's song and Can-Linn's song and I really like both!
