New Order - World (The price of love) (Perfecto remix)

3 Weeks

One of my favourite remixes ever, Paul Oakenfold takes a rather drab track from Republic and makes it all wonderful with lots of sequencers and bright shiny drums. Anyway, I love it and the full version is something I'd kill to be able to make.

It also has one of the best covers I've seen.

Distant Sun - Crowded House

3 Weeks

The song that really got me into Crowded House. I'd liked Fall at Your Feet and had heard Nails in My Feet too and liked that but when I got Now 26 in Dec 1993 I completely fell in love with this song. I got the album Together Alone on the 16th March 1994 and spend the next year being completely obsessed by them.

The album spent a while as my favourite ever - granted, I probably only had about 10 albums at the time.

They were the first band I ever say in concert - 26th May 1994.

Pearl Jam - Go

2 Weeks

When the rock world was going mental about/being disappointed by In Utero I was busy enjoying Pearl Jam's Vs. Considering I hate with a passion all that they influenced I still have a soft spot for the first two Pearl Jam albums. This has a blistering solo.

Pity they didn't release Rearview Mirror as a single.

The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds

1 Week

The third quarter of 1993 was a period when the peak of the decade started. It wouldn't end for 5 years. Some magic singles only manage one week at number 1 and some dont get there at all.

This is one of the lucky ones. One of their hookier numbers - it ended up on chill-out albums but it's far too uplifting for that.

Crowded House - Nails in My Feet

1 Week

Another one-weeker. This has aged slightly better than Distant Sun - I think it's the build, and the backing harmonies and the way it goes so all over the place when it's finishes. They really were dragging their formula into weird new places with Together Alone which was done to huge benefit. The instrumentation was nicely off-kilter, that solo was almost grungy. The strings are sinister too.

Aphex Twin - On

3 Weeks

Hearing this on MTV in late 1993 was one of the pivotal points in my love affair with music. From this point on I wanted to find brittle precise, beautiful music. The delay on the piano-like sound just mesmerised me and the fast paced percussion made it sound otherworldly, like an alien language.

Up to that point my interest in electronic music was mostly dance or synth-pop orientated. After that it would delve into strange new places.

Kate had terrible luck being in the charts at the same time as On and Nails in My Feet.

R.E.M. - Find The River

4 Weeks

And after 5 other singles that held various levels of my attention (didn't like Man on the Moon much, liked the rest of them) Find The River makes it to number 1, but fails to make the UK top 40. Why would anyone have bought it? They'd already sold 2 million copies of Automatic for the People and the b-sides were an Orange Crush instrumental and a live version of Everybody Hurts.

The reason this hits number 1 for me is that I didn't kill it off. There's not much on that album that does anything for me anymore - Sweetness Follows and Try Not to Breath still do great things to me. The rest leave me cold.

Anyone who loves this band have already made up their mind about this track - some will see it as a after-thought single, some will be bored by it. Some, like me will love its effortless chorus, like a lullaby soothing and aching at the same time. Mike Mills' harmonies entwined with Stipe's are a thing of magic.

The wouldn't be so openly populist as this for quite a while and by that time people would have lost interest.

Find The River sort of was released and ignored - it made little impact on me initially, then one night I'd fallen asleep with the radio on and woke up to it, which woke me up with a jolt, it was so great. Probably one of their best 3 records.

I can't understand it being ignored - I didn't see a point in it being released at all and it wasn't until a few years ago until it really hit me how wonderful it is.

Absolutely adore this. The vocals are taken from a Rickie Lee Jones interview - but the real winner here is the tune itself. Outstanding - the Cumulonimbus Mix is the Dr Blind CHOIX version though. :P

Predictions? It's my favourite ever year for albums.

Oh I'll have a couple of wild guesses and opt for maybe some Cornflake Girl and Stay Together?

Personally, I'd hope to also see some Regulate, Confide In Me, No Good (Start The Dance), Always and Whatever...
