N-Trance - Set You Free

Where to start with this.....the best dance song of 1995. (Yeah, that's right, Born Slippy). I think the beat is what most impresses me. I dont know how the Prodigy didn't scratch their heads and wonder why they didn't come up with it. The riff is also world-conquering and also reminiscent of the Prodigy.

Top that of with thunder storms, euphoric vocals and house-piano and you have a masterpiece. It's on my list of 12" to purchase.

You can't beat thunderstorms as the opening sample to a dance track. Didn't it get stuck behind Celine Dion's borefest "Think Twice"?

It's funny cos N-Trance did nothing but cheesy cover versions after this, such a weird career-high to have amongst their back catalogue.

Also - I thought Portishead was '94, ooops!

Massive Attack - Protection

A song that I didn't quite get when it came out. After falling for Portishead's Dummy, I felt the beats and guitar twang in Protection were too shiny - not gritty enough.

But it's subtle. Of course, the poignant chorus is a strong hook. It was 1997 when I really got into this when I got it on an alternative music compilation called Untitled 2 - which I must dig out again.

Tracey Thorn would feature a lot more in the official charts of the following two years.

Sheryl Crow - Strong Enough

So far, so Buzzjack for 1995 and the female vocals continue.

I really disliked All I Wanna Do so this really surprised me with its loveliness. A simple song of doubt from Sheryl.

The Stone Roses - Ten Storey Love Song

Anyone wanting the gorgeous, lilting guitar work of the Stone Roses' debut album found little succour in The Second Coming. With a vocal that's actually more Tim Burgess (of the Charlatans) than Ian Brown Ten Story Love Song is nearly exactly what it says on the tin.

At a time when Oasis were hot property and could manage number 1 singles, this really should have been a bigger hit.

Boo Radleys - Wake Up, Boo!

One of THE pop songs of the era. Perhaps it should have been released in the Summer heat wave of 1995 and may have been an even bigger hit. Harmonies, parping brass, lots of 60s inspired touches and a relentlessly up-beat chorus.

Some lamented that they had to go for the pop-jugular to have a hit. It sent the parent album to number 1 in a year where indie pop sold by the bucketload.

I think I remember first hearing "Wake Up Boo" on a indie compilation, something like Shine Too (anyone remember that series?); bear in mind I was 9 at the time and still mostly in to pop stuff like the Outhere Brothers - loved it at the time and it still sounds great today!

Grace - Not Over Yet

A deceptively simple song that has grown in stature since I started to like it in 1995. It got a Perfecto remix in 1999 which made it more trancey and wasn't at all a poor effort.

"Not Over Yet" is a TUNE - the 7 minute 12" version was played at the 90s night and it went crazy. Brilliant.

Even the Klaxons version ain't bad. :o

Pleasantly surprised at Strong Enough! Beautiful song, rediscovered it about two years ago after not playing it for ages.

Portishead- Sour Times

A lot more complex than Glorybox, this is a stand out track on Dummy. The trickling dulcimer sends shivers down my spine. Liberal sampling of Lalo Schifrin's

Danube Incident it layers it up with hip-hop beats, strings and Beth's vocals to produce a shockingly original piece.

McAlmont & Butler - Yes

Well, now. Isn't this a peach of a song? It's hard to imagine the glee of Bernard Butler when he and David McAlmont finished this. The absolute majesty of David's voice and the retro stylings of Bernard and Mike Hedges' production, the "f*ck you" message, the sheer populist appeal of it. It was superior pop music and a long way from the staggering dourness of Dog Man Star.

Ripostes don't come much more emphatic.

It did hold Billy Ray Martin's In Your Loving Arms and Radiohead's Fake Plastic Trees from number 1. Both highlights of 1995.

Not Over yet even better in remixed form, what a corker, and Yes....YES. One of the greatest records of all time, just stunning.

I love the Spector sounds in "Yes"; the whole production along with McAlmonts dramatic vocals. IT would have been a massive #1 had it been released in the 1960s. Brilliant.

I'm really enjoying 1995 so far. :D

Moby - Into The Blue

Everything is Wrong - Moby's third album - was rather good, if a little ignored by the public and critics alike. It was a nice collision of frantic rave and beautiful chillout. Into the Blue was the fourth of 5 singles lifted of the album - although one of the tracks was also a vinyl only single two years before the album came out.

The single version on Into the Blue was a little more interesting than the album version with filtered percussion and additional piano. The vocals are quite distinctive in places and not for everyone.

Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Stuck

The band's final single - and I have to admit the only one I have consciously formed any opinion about. It came to my knowledge via a Virgin compilation called Wake Up and Listen! It has pleasantly complex layers (probably due to the band having two bassists and a guitarist) and by comparison to their earlier sound, a reportedly cleaner and more mature sound.

Vocally it reminds me of Mark Hollis or perhaps Roland Orzabal - certainly an '80s influence. A wonderful discovery and reason enough for the existence of compilation albums.

Lightning Seeds - Perfect

Here's a band that some might find as a bit too "nice" and that's probably true of a lot of their material.

Then again, there's a whole lot of people who rather like one or two of their songs. While they never matched the head-spinningly addictive qualities of debut single Pure, Perfect seem pretty good to me.

There's Beatles touches everywhere, which is no surprise given their origins - the chord progression and a yesterdays/todays/tomorrows exchanging chorus.

The 4th or five singles taken from Jollification - an album which I'm sure is many people's idea of hell due to its relentless niceness, Perfect was the pick of the bunch for me.

Tricky - Hell is Around the Corner

Obviously, this pilfers the same sample that Glorybox does but I prefer this creation. The languid vocals of Tricky and Martina do strange things to my mind.

Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know

Well, well. This is an angry piece of work. I remember when I first heard it in mid-95 I was quite taken by it - I likened to Tori with guitars. It's certainly one the harder songs on the album which is a brave choice as a single.

It would not be my favourite single taken from the Jagged Little Pill.

The Connells - 74-75

This is not really my sort of thing - usually, but then again I break my own rules all the time. Fortunately radio airplay didn't manage to kill it off for me like it did so many other slightly-alternative American soft rock songs in the 90s.

It was already two years old before it became a hit in Europe.

It has to be said that Autumn 95 wasn't the strongest time for singles and I include in that Country House/Roll With It.
