Useless! That's one of my favourite DM singles also, really adore it and the standout from Ultra. Do you approve of the Kruder & Dorfmeister remix?

(not as good as the original mind)

Yeah. That's really good too - because it allows the baseline to be more prominent.

I'm toying with the idea of Top 5s for 1998 because from May to Sept there's a stupid amount of songs not staying in the Top 3 for very long. Possibly even a better year than 1996 for singles.

BT - Flaming June

3 Weeks

I missed this in 1997 and so it's going in here in Jan 1998 as it was re-released with new re-mixes then. It's a grower. I never went to trance nights back when it was huge and so some tracks that work better in clubs were sometimes lost on me. This is one of them.

I went to see Paul van Dyk last year and thought that For an Angel would be the highlight of the night. It wasn't. He played Flaming June and I was totally high on it and I was sober! Brought tears to my eyes.

Green Day - Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)

3 Weeks

Probably not a song for the die-hard punk fans of Green Day but sometimes I'm a sucker for acoustic guitar and orchestration. I liked Green Day since I saw them to Welcome to Paradise on TOTP in 1994. Billy Joe's voice is pleasantly sneer-free compared to his contemporaries.

Cornershop - Brimful Of Asha (Norman Cook Mix)

Like many people I had been oblivious to the original version of this that was released in 1997 - but this remix is a sheer ebullient joy.

Madonna Frozen

3 Weeks

Well now, isn't this just amazing? And for many reasons too. She could have come back with the stopping pop of Ray of Light but instead took a risk with this dark, dramatic ballad.

The true star of this piece is William Orbit who manages incredible levels of beautiful music in it. The multiple percussive motifs, the pulsating synths, those filtered drums, this strings.

Here's just the music, if anyone is interested.

Ian Brown - Corpses In Their Mouths

3 Weeks

While I like My Star, I absolutely love this. Love the relaxing beat and liquid guitar throughout. Sounds wonderful in the sunshine. It would be a long time before he would match this.

Also around in April was Bernard Butler's second single which a huge improvement on Stay.

Ma$e featuring Total - Tell Me What You Want

1 Week

Sounding a lot like Puff Daddy (maybe he always does - I can't remember any tracks from him) this is just a perfectly languid piece of late 90s urban music.

Tori Amos - Spark

1 Week

Here we have a single that took time to grow on me. Obviously I was delighted to have new Tori material but I wasn't that impressed at first with Spark. Too metallic and shrill - Not enough piano. Her very best video too.

The b-sides were awesome - Cooling and Purple People.

It was the last time she would have a UK Top 40 hit.

Massive Attack - Teardrop

4 Weeks

Instantly captivating and with one of Liz Frazier's most decipherable vocals, Teardrop completely dazzled the eagerly awaiting fans whose appetite was whetted by Risingson a year earlier.

It was the lightest thing that would be found on the staggering Mezzanine album - album that I wouldn't really absorb for a few years. It's now one of my favourite albums ever.

I did get a bit bored of Teardrop for a while but now it's back among my favourites of 1998.

To note - Garbage's Push It has had a different fortune - it was my single of 98 and hit my all time Top 10 in 1999 but has since fallen from such heights. One of the most played songs in my musical listening lifetime.
