That has to be the last of the Manics and Orbital. Your two favourite 90s acts?

Looks? Can you give an example of a band whose look has turned you off them?

Maybe he meant hooks :heehee:

Although there is more to music than just vocals and hooks.

I don't agree. What I do thing is that hooks are different for different people. A hook may not be melodic but textural, timbrel, percussive, tonal, etc.

Are you saying each element of a song is a hook? What about stuff like an atmospheric drone synth, can that be considered a hook? I would think a hook is like a catchy part of a song, therefore I would not consider every piece of music as a hook.

I am saying that each element of a song CAN be a hook. Atmospheric drone is a hook for certain listener - as we don't all look for the same things in music. Someone listening to drone metal is looking for something different that someone listening to an Aqua album and what attracts their attention in one drone metal track in comparison to another drone metal track is a hook, something that triggers their musical taste.

Destiny's Child - Bills, Bills, Bills

3 Weeks

As some DJ joked at the time, the intro harpsichord sounds like when the bad guy turns up on The Smurfs. :D

Anyway, this was my first taste of Destiny's Child (and to the term automobills). I love the sparsity of the production. And the sass.

Badly Drawn Boy - Once Around The Block

3 Weeks

If only he'd released this a few months earlier to hit the Summer, this could have been much much bigger with the right support. It would be re-released the following year - but even later :(.

Suede - Everything Will Flow

4 Weeks

Their last very good single (I'm reluctant to call it great for some reason) and a stand out on Head Music - there weren't many :(.

Watching the video again it strikes me that Brett Anserson has a very Sharleen Spiteri way of walking, or maybe it just looks like a Texas video.

OMG I totally forgot about Everything Will Flow. The lyrics were getting very silly by the time Headmusic came along but that somg was far from their worst.

I love when she sings "but it feels alright". A wonderful hook. I much prefer it to Baby One More Time.

The Chemical Brothers - Out of Control

4 Weeks

Also closing their 90s account with an number 1 single (in this chart, at least) is the Chemical Brothers featuring Bernard Sumner from New Order. A propelling track which twists itself into a fractured New Order song with the introduction of some characteristic Sumner guitar work in a punishing but ecstatic breakdown.
