This list would be a fairly accurate reflection of what I was listening to at the time. Not totally accurate as there would have been loads of retro stuff in the chart as well.

I think I had just got The Stooges first two albums and the MC5 debut around this time so they would have been fairly dominant presences in the chart.

Yes it was indeed Talk Talk. Would be included in my Top 100 tracks if I ever get around to doing it.

 

Falling was such a beautiful piece of music how could anyone not like it?

Such is the relentless flow of great singles in 1992, this only gets one week at the Top.

 

It took a good few weeks to reach the Top of the official chart. I distinctly remember the first time I heard it - it was when it enter the Top 40 at number 13. I liked it instantly. I guess its popularity has probably taken away from it's credibly. Its sound was copied a few times - most notably Mr Vain, What is Love? and Captain Hollywood Project's More and More.

 

 

Goes down a storm in a club, still.

So much you could write about this song - it is the epitome of Euro pop and nothing else from that genre really comes close. Turbo B left the band after "Rhythm Is A Dancer" was released as he apparently hated the song and especially disliked his infamous lyric "I'm serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer" - but you can't deny it has an impact on the listener. The actual track, from it's opening synths and heavy drum thud echoes was something so different and it had a major impact on the general public.

 

6 weeks at #1 and 13 inside the Top 10 meant it was for a time the biggest seller of 1992 - though "I Will Always Love You" sadly overtook it in the dying days of the year however.

Indeed. The peak of euro-dance in quality and sales. There was much more exciting stuff coming out though. The Prodigy and Altern-8 would see to that.

Another dance number one from another dance legend. It's all about that sweet synth break down for me. This is their best song for me, although Active-8 comes close.

Shame they never had a song called "Defenestr8". "Activ8 (Come With Me)" has a campaign behind it to make Christmas number 1 this year - I think it might make the Top 10!

Such a timeless riff. The part where it drops to a lower key is just magic. I have this on 12".

 

The combined might of Don't You Want Me and Hypnotic St8 kept Madonna from number 1 with her beautiful This Used to Be My Playground. Enya's Book of Days also out performed it's seed of number 3.

A fair few in common (and some I'm rather embarrassed by, Kim Appleby and Cathy Dennis are definitely my Rozallas!) - I'm really tempted to do what you have done and look at the charts retrospectively and see what should have done better based upon my tastes now. Also made me realise that This House wasn't a #1 for me after all, could have sworn it would have been! :(

 

12 number ones in my chart and loads hit 2, I wouldnt be embarrassed by Kim Appleby (great toon and I always associate the lyrics with dealing with her sister's recent death, so it's bittersweet) or cathy Dennis - great dance record and great pop songwriter.... B-)

The Sisters Of Mercy - Temple Of Love

It seems criminal that this only gets a week at number 1 but 1992 had classics being released on a weekly basis. I tried to stay away from re-issues in this chart but that's usually when the song had already been a hit. I allowed this re-issue because it hadn't been a hit when released in 1983.

 

This is just so imposing and pervasive.

 

AlexRange should love this as it has male AND female vocals. :D

Brilliant track but I can't tell from your post if you're aware that (in my definition) this isn't strictly speaking a reissue. It is a complete re-recording of their 1983 single. Eldritch is the only member who appears on both versions and the original is very much of a Goth record as opposed to this more straightforward Rock version. Both are favourites of mine

This is kind of a strange song. It's not my usual cup of tea but I do like the way it builds. There's loads of reasons why I shouldn't like it but I do. I love the deep vocal samples about dream control.
