QUICK QUESTION: is there anything to be worried about in here that's likely to hold back CANTANDO MIMSY DA CATARINA

This is what it's telling me.

Rui Andrade – “Ao teu encontro” (Marc Paelinck) - Pretty boy sings pretty song

Suzy – ”Quero ser tua (como a lua é do luar)” (Emanuel) - Hi-nrg schlager for old folks to like and young folks to vote as a joke

Zana – ”Nas asas da sorte” (Jan Van Dijk) - Boring theatre song

Raquel Guerra – ”Sonhos roubados” (Nuno Feist) - Boring theatre song 2

Madalena Trabuco - ”Coração de filigrana” (Tozé Santos) - Folk-pop crossover

Lara Afonso – ”O teu segredo” (João Matos/Miguel Ferrador) - Beige ballad

Ricardo Alfonso – ”Emoção” (Ricardo Alfonso/Luis Fernando/Rui Fingers) - beige ballad vs boring theatre song mashup

Carla Ribeiro - ”Mais para dar” (Hélder Godinho) - last place "different" composition

Ivo Lucas – ”Eu vou” (João Só) - bad dad rock

So I'd be worried about the schlager girl lapping up dem votes, but the who would vote for her when they've got CATARINA??? :w00t:

yassssss Babic! *.*

Catarina Pereira's "Mea Culpa" is to be a grown up and sensual etno-dance follow up to "Canta Por Mim", says the song's author Carlos Coelho, and an English version of the track is also being produced. *.*

Running order of the Semifinal [in brackets how they describe their songs]:

01 | "Mea Culpa" | Catarina Pereira [etno-dance]

02 | "Eu Vou" | Ivo Lucas

03 | "Nas Asas da Sorte" | Zana

04 | "Mais Para Dar" | Carla Ribeiro [pop-rock]

05 | "Emoção" | Ricardo Afonso [uptempo contemporary rock]

06 | "Ao Teu Encontro | Rui Andrade [ballad]

07 | "O Teu Segredo" | Lara Afonso

08 | "Sonhos Roubados" | Raquel Guerra

09 | "Coração de Filigrana" | Madalena Trabuco [pop]

10 | "Quero Ser Tua (como a lua é do luar)" | Suzy

5 songs will qualify to the Final. The running order of the Final will be the same as the semi-final.

Suzy there closing the Final with something that I think

I finally purchased Canta por mim the other day and NEEDLESS TO SAY I have been SHAKING MY TITS INCESSANTLY for 48 hours

It IS worth the pence!

I hammered it incessantly back in the day but even today it's high up there along with all the Kalomiras, Helenas, Sertabs...

[The point is to compare Canta Por Mim with all those ESC etno-pop entires. Bad Pavel!]

SOZ babe there's nothing ETHNIC about Be My Valentine as life-changing and utterly fabulous that one was :(

OMG how could I forget Die For You?!

Aside, Be My Valentine is of course the PEAK OF WESTERN CIVILISATION but doesn't count as an ethnic titshaker. Ditto, Horehronie is more of a 'drape your tits in algae and RUN THROUGH A MYSTIC FOREST' moment that an titshaker per se ~

But those Ukrainian horns all over it, isn't it ETNO enough?

Regardless, I'd put in #1 even on a Balkan ballad countdown.

I find Horehronie stylistically very close to Forogj Vilag, hence why I included it here but wouldn't care less tbf.

And shame on y'all for forgetting that fabulous Antique moment.

Those aren't really UKRANIAN horns haha

FESTIVAL DA CANÇÃO 2014 - SEMIFINAL

http://www.atelevisao.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/festival-da-cancao-logo.jpg

And so Portugal is back. After skipping Malmö for lack of funds (and a DNQ status two years on the trot), the Portuguese return to the competition seemingly unchanged. With their "this-will-do" state of mind, lack of international appeal and new beige tracks that no one will remember in two weeks time let alone come May.

But don't let that fool you. They packed their mighty 10 with two promising uptempos and a male power ballad if all else fails. It's QUALIFICADOS PARA A FINAL or nothing, unless the national juries get it all wrong once more. Oh but wait! They axed the juries! The outdated, MOR-loving regional juries are booted out in favour of a 100% public televote result. This sounds like a shoe-in for a perfect, crowd pleasing winner but may I remind you of 2009 when Flor-de-Lis came 2nd in the televote behind

, or the
because the juries couldn't agree on which one of the other tracks to back.

But worry not. With no joke entries, or overly popular celebrities, it sounds like it's a good year to leave the juries out of this one. Especially when you consider the return of Saint Catarina of Pereira.

01 | "Mea Culpa" | Catarina Pereira

http://blog.prinz.de/grand-prix/files/Catarina-Pereira2.png

Talented young minx from the North of Portugal (roughly translates as "Glasgow"), Catarina Pereira is no stranger to you. Her

almost won the right to represent Portugal in 2010 and does not need introductions. With enough fuscia fabric to strangle the likes of Kalomira Sarantis and wow an entire continent at the same time, she was betrayed by the panel of "national music experts" who thought "Canta Por Mim" was too cheesy to go to Oslo. Nonetheless she continued her slayage through to a 3rd place at OGAE Second Chance and a place in the hearts of most all Eurogays.

If you still don't know her from here, you might know her from the streets of London where she currently resides with

She started her career through talent show "Familia Superstar" back in 2007. A show which had pairs of family members competing in an X Factor-like competition. Eliminated half-way through the show, Catarina and her older cousin lost out the bottom two voting to... You guessed it, Portugal's 2010 Eurovision entry

who went on to win the whole thing.

That did not stop Catarina though. She threw herself head first into the world of entertainment, recording demos and tracks for soap opera soundtracks and starring in Lisbon musicals.

The Portuguese music industry is unkind to Pop music and Pop singers, quickly rejecting them as schlager (or "pimba" as we say in Portuguese - but more on that later) and without any good prospects for her career she fled to London where she's studying musical theatre, acting and song. Her cousin, Fernando Pereira, became the Portuguese Anri 'I'm a Joker' Jokhadze when he came last place and nil points from both jury and televote in the Portuguese national selection of 2009 with the dire "É o Amor (Que Nos Faz Acreditar)" (''It's Love (That Makes Us Believe)").

She returns this year after being invited by Carlos Coelho and Andrej Babić to sing their song once again because according to them, it made sense that it was Catarina and no one else. She accepted the task and says "Mea Culpa" is a more mature and sexier version of "Canta Por Mim", and she's ready to slay and take the crown that was rightfully hers 4 years ago.

Can she bring Portugal to the forefront of etno-pop? Or will performing first be a damning curse for our saviour and saint?

02 | "Eu Vou" | Ivo Lucas

http://smalltalkandateaspoon.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/398466_106408316155487_100003589570374_20080_138590784_n.jpg

Beware. You have just entered Blandonia. Where everything is so MoR Heidi Range is regarded as a deity. AlexRange will want to burn this next section on CD.

Ivo Lucas started his career in the 6th series of teen soap opera "Morangos com Açucar" (don't ask). Coincidently Heidi Range actually appeared in an episode of this back when 2.0 were at their peak. A platform for several young actors and occasional singers (because a Pop artist in Portugal is mostly an actor, they very rarely crossover to a Pop music career unless the soap's storyline

in).

So just another one to come with that background. Popular with pre-teens and I see a guitar so he should be as safe as houses for a spot in the Final.

Music and lyrics belong to João Só, leader of Portuguese Indie-crossover band

, so expect something even Radio 2 would be ashamed to play.

03 | "Nas Asas da Sorte" | Zana

http://nd06.jxs.cz/006/066/bbdc31bdd0_96939057_o2.jpg

Warning! These producers are from the 90s. So expect this to be beige as beige comes in a Portugal National Selection. Zana, real name Susana Pinto - which is like so boring right? - promises joy and lots of fun on stage. What she means by fun is something we don't really know so this can go either way. Zana is herself from the 90s:

in 1997 where she came 7th. After that she kept herself busy with television roles, theatre roles and "two albums" of which, quite honestly, I've never heard of.

04 | "Mais Para Dar" | Carla Ribeiro

http://escxtra.com/wp-content/uploads/Carla-Ribeiro.png

Not much to say about this one really. She was a backing singer to Filipa Sousa back in Baku 2012 and the song title translates as "More to Give". Unfortunately it's not more of "Vida Minha" as the team behind this song is responsible for some of the blandest things on Soundcloud.

Carla made herself known through The Voice of Portugal where she reached the Semi-Finals. Considering

and the song's composer, expect something so Rock that even Sheryl Crow would reject as a B-Side for her most recent single release.

05 | "Emoção" | Ricardo Afonso

http://www.imediamonkey.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/thevoiceuk2_ricardoafonso.jpg

Another The Voice alumn, Ricardo Afonso has been living in London since 2005 where he takes part in the musical "We Will Rock You". And as that might suggest he

in the British version of the show. He was chosen by Tom Jones and Danny O'Donoghue and put himself in Team Danny so that might give you an idea of what kind of sound he's going for. He was eliminated in the
when he lost against Mitchel Emms and no one wanted to steal him from Danny so he went home.

He composed his own entry so we're in for a singer-songwriter, guitar-playing, ladies swooning type of performance here.

06 | "Ao Teu Encontro | Rui Andrade

http://www.propagandistasocial.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/rui-andrade.jpg

Coming to prominence through the first series of Portuguese Idol where he reached the Top15 but swiftly eliminated before the live shows got going, Rui kept himself busy with a myriad of other talent shows, the last of which he won with the prize being to sing live on stage with

. Opening all doors for his career, he was quickly poached for a part in teen soap opera "Morangos com Açucar" where he became the heartthrob we know today. Seeing as his series was basically a "Fame" rip-off, it was no surprise to see him singing in two tracks for the soap's soundtrack and pre-teens were having wet dreams about our Rui.

A

and
give us certainty this is the dark horse we need to be careful about. His "musical school beige ballads" are powerful enough to storm through the televote and his good-looks are more than capable of getting him an extra couple of hundred votes. Make no mistake, this is the Portuguese Måns Zelmerlöw of balladry and he's in it to win it. The song's composer, Marc Paelinck, is responsible for Chiara's "What If We", Xandee's "1 Life", Sergio & The Ladies' "Sister" AND Alyona Lanskaya's "Solayoh" so clearly something mediocre is on the way, but he's been receiving support messages from Eurovision goddesses like Ruslana and, err... Lucia Perez, so there's a lot of love for the guy.

Also, not that it matters but he's openly gay so get ready to call him (maybe).

07 | "O Teu Segredo" | Lara Afonso

http://sites.euroimpala.pt/cache/bin/XPQUQowXX215799pNpAsNJhx9ZKU.jpg

(Ignore her husband there.) Housewife Lara Afonso lurks in the shadows of the Portuguese entertainment industry. Never quite here nor there, her voice is probably more famous than her face, which is a good thing but no one can really name her. She's got several

under her belt but no albums nor television roles as far as I know. She's the girl to go to when you need a filler track and "O Teu Segredo" (Your Secret) should be more of the same. Lara took part in the National Selection for 2006, but no one really remembers that anymore.

08 | "Sonhos Roubados" | Raquel Guerra

http://jornale.pt/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/raquel-3-600x441.jpg

Also stemming from Portuguese Idol is Raquel Guerra. She was runner-up in the

, ahead of
and soap opera cast-mate Luciana Abreu.

With Luciana, she starred in the Portuguese adaptation of south-american musical soap-turned-craze

, where she played a good friend and bandmate to Luciana's lead character. They acted, sang, twirled and became household names. Luciana went on to become a national nut job, but grounded and graceful as Raquel is she carried on with television shows and serials building a chunky CV of work.

It's her first time at the Portuguese finals and her first big step away from Luciana's shadow. The song's composers are responsible for big voiced-Vanessa's 3 showings so we can expect something

,
and
. Now, Luciana and Vanessa both have strong, memorable voices but soft-voiced Raquel? She'd struggle with all those big notes. Still, I expect her to turn it out and be a surprise finalist. She's bound to have the best of the beige female-led songs anyway.

09 | "Coração de Filigrana" | Madalena Trabuco

http://nd06.jxs.cz/289/874/855ef93b1c_96939069_o2.jpg

World music artiste Madalena Trabuco is a French-Portuguese version of an anonymous Eliza Doolittle. But more

. Completely unknown in Portugal, she built herself a career in France where she is also a nobody. Tozé Santos, leader of MoR pop-rock band Per7ume, is the song's composer and invited Madelena directly, presumably after coming across her videos on YouTube of something. If you want a comparison, Per7ume are the
but without the big hooks and stadium-ready melodies. Expect it to be quirky, hipster and/or faux-etno with a touch of French.

10 | "Quero Ser Tua (como a lua é do luar)" | Suzy

1653803_431418616989668_1844893445_n.jpg

Back in 2007, in one of the most uninspired National Finals Portugal ever saw, Sabrina emerged victorious with the schlager anthem "

" that took Portugal to 11th place in Helsinki's mammoth Semi-Final. It was a cute little catchy number that the older audience fell in love with and it took the song's composer, Emanuel, by surprise. Out of Helsinki he says he learnt a lot about Eurovision and that he hoped he had a bigger song to give to Europe. Roll on 7 years and the schlager-meister is invited again and the results sound promising. Although, I shouldn't really be using the word "schlager". In Portugal we call this type of music, the cheesy Popular song full of innuendo that everyone's so guilty for enjoying too much, "Pimba" and it was actually named after one of his mega-hits "Pimba Pimba" where he sang that "if women wanted a hug or a kiss, we (the men) bang - we bang". And so Pimba was born. Lately his craft has shifted to
: the African-genre that took half the world by storm. It's younger, less cringey and a lot more catchy so Suzy seems to be in good hands here. He promised this to be the Portuguese version of Adelén so everyone is expectant and it should be a surefire smash but can it win over Catarina Pereira? The pimp slot tells me this is RTP's chosen one but won't the anonymity of the singer - known only for having a
- be a determent for its win?

This Saturday 10 become 5 and lines will be open all week until next Saturday when the winner will be chosen.

Who do you think will be in the Final and who do you think/hope will win?

Lol, my write-up is a flop.

anyway,

PREDIX

FINAL | "Ao Teu Encontro | Rui Andrade

FINAL | "Eu Vou" | Ivo Lucas

FINAL | "Mea Culpa" | Catarina Pereira

FINAL | "Quero Ser Tua (como a lua é do luar)" | Suzy

FINAL | "Sonhos Roubados" | Raquel Guerra

06th | "Emoção" | Ricardo Afonso

07th | "Coração de Filigrana" | Madalena Trabuco

08th | "Mais Para Dar" | Carla Ribeiro

09th | "O Teu Segredo" | Lara Afonso

10th | "Nas Asas da Sorte" | Zana

There's a grey area between Ivo, Ricardo, Madalena and Raquel and anyone of those can end up in the Final or BUST so I guess it's all down to the songs. For now I say the most popular of them will make it.
