Posted November 11, 201311 yr We all know the same songs will return every year - but does that prospect fill you with joy or dread?
November 11, 201311 yr I love Christmas songs. I do feel they should be banned from radio and tv until December 1st though. I called a hotel in London at work the other day and they had Mariah Carey in the frickin background on the radio. This was November 1st :/ Edited November 11, 201311 yr by GrAmii
November 11, 201311 yr I'm not too bothered. It's nice to hear some classics, but I wish people would stop being so narrow minded when it comes to new Christmas songs. There are many people I know who think that Christmas is all about the same old Band Aid and Slade and just dismiss new Christmas songs as rubbish before giving them a chance which is a real shame. There are good new Christmas songs being produced. Take The Killers for example, who release a new Christmas song every year which is brilliant but always gets ignored and I'd say 5/7 of their Christmas tracks are just as good as those old classics. The last modern Christmas song I recall doing well in the charts was Coldplay's Christmas Lights in 2010 and probably Justin Biebers Mistletoe. I think that went Top 40 a few years ago.
November 11, 201311 yr I dislike all these Christmas classics, which are bring back in UK charts on every Christmas (with only 1 exception Mariah Carey "All I Want For Christmas").
November 11, 201311 yr I've loved them and I've also suffered from overkill with them, they should play some different oldies some christmasses and give them a rest a year or two (or three), there are plenty of forgotten gems that a new audience needs to hear...
November 11, 201311 yr Can't make such a sweeping statement on all Christmas songs. Some are good (Pogues featuring Kirsty, Slade, Band Aid, etc.) some are OK (Wizzard, Greg Lake, etc) and some I wouldn't miss if they disappeared into a black hole (Mariah Carey, Shakin' Stevens, Wham, etc.) I virtually always have my Winamp set to random and it does feel a little odd when something like "Santa Baby" comes on in the middle of the summer but as is isn't on the radio all the time then it's quite a pleasant surprise when that happens

This. :cheer: I found some very good Christmas songs from my retro music journey. Dana - It's Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas Mary Hopkin - Mary Had A Baby  Anne Charleston and Ian Smith - Old Fashioned Christmas Carpenters - Merry Christmas Darling Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers - Christmas Without You
November 11, 201311 yr Ugh, Christmas songs are definitely not my favorites. With the exception of AIWFC and Last Christmas, I pretty much hate them all. Especially Fairytale of New York, blech. I wish there was just a different catalogue (sp?) chart for the UK where all these old and overplayed songs are eligible instead of on the Official Chart! :(

Nor should they be - IMO if a song is selling enough to chart, it should be included, regardless of age. However, that's a discussion for another thread. Edited November 11, 201311 yr by vidcapper
November 11, 201311 yr LOVE THEM!! As everyone here knows lol. As Gav said above the radio stations these days dont give new xmas songs much of a chance with new efforts. The Killers efforts are quite good apart from 2 of them if they would actually get plays. Also most xmas classics become chart hits because of timing of release. Slade, Wizzard, Wham, even the Darkness where in their prime of their careers and radio was loving them so when they released they def will get airplay. Then of course there are random songs that become classics like Chris Rea etc!
November 11, 201311 yr A few of them are terrible (I wish the Mariah song would be ERASED from the public consciousness) but I love Christmas songs on the whole. I do wish some new ones would start to enter the Christmas classic realm but I don't think the existing classics ever really get old. Wouldn't be Christmas without The Pogues, Slade, Band Aid etc. Though as above I'd happily do without Mariah.
November 11, 201311 yr I love a few (Mariah, John Lennon/Yoko Ono, The Pogues) and some I can stand, but when they dominate the music channels it gets annoying.
November 11, 201311 yr I don't understand how anyone could hate a Christmas song unless they originally disliked the artist! I love all the big classics like Wham!, Mariah, The Pogues, Slade etc. along with all the ones from the 40s (Christmas carols I suppose). I just wish more artists recorded original tracks and that they would be successful - Coldplay and Justin Bieber's efforts seem to have been the best selling but they haven't gained classic status. 1 December is always the date I start getting Christmas-y, putting up the decs and getting the Christmas compilations out! :D I look forward to it each November and the weather always teases me, giving me a hint of that Christmas feeling. 'Happy Xmas (War is Over)' is one of my favourite Christmas songs. Edited November 11, 201311 yr by liamk97

Wonder if they will eventually be replaced as this century goes on a bit like classic ones from the 1930-60 period eg Dean Martin, Bing & Nat King Cole did from the 1970s onwards? Its not that people dont know them but they are less known now by the younger generation because of The Pogues, Mariah etc & they would rarely get played on radio/at xmas parties (apart from on xmas week itself). I think Coldplay - Christmas Lights will become a classic (give it a chance Liam lol it was released in 2011 & radio 1 did play it last year) & Tha Darkness has just about become one too even if it doesnt shoot into the top 40 like Mariah, The Pogues & Wham do! And Happy Xmas (War Is Over)  Edited November 11, 201311 yr by Jade

November 11, 201311 yr I love Christmas songs, I listen to them all year round  Faith Hill's Where Are You, Christmas? and Bananarama's Baby, It's Christmas being the best of the bunch CLEARLY.

True  There are ALWAYS the dodgy Christmas countdowns on the music channels as well with random ones like: Cheeky Girls - Have a Cheeky Christmas, Bo Selecta - Proper Chrimbo & S Club Juniors. Edited November 11, 201311 yr by Jade
