Will Young Wows Wembley Watch today's MTV News bulletins...

The singer gets sexy and silly on the London leg of his Keep On Tour...

If anyone was in any doubt whether Will Young had what it takes to play Wembley arena he answered them on Tuesday night (October 2).

He burst on stage to 'Keep On' and, dressed as a pilot backed by dancers dressed as air hostesses, he proceeded to wow the crowd with his moves.

A series of tongue-in-cheek costumes and stage set-ups followed – there was a nutcracker segment in which he got togged-up as toy soldier and a cheesy 70s game show set.

Like Madonna did recently on her Confessions tour, the singer even had a show-jumping themed section - although let’s just say he packed a lot more into his jodhpurs.

It wasn’t style over substance though - 'Light My Fire' got the crowd in the mood early on while 'All Time Love' prompted a sea of waving lighters and mobile phones.

Will’s voice sounded better than ever – husky and funky on 'Switch It On', powerful and soulful on 'Your Game' (our highlight) and goosebump inducingly delicate on 'Who Am I' and 'Leave Right Now'.

He also found the time to joke and ad-lib with the crowd between tunes.

When one fan screamed, “Nice bumâ€, he bantered, “Thanks, I’ve had something put in it,†before clarifying: “marshmallowsâ€!

If Will was nervous performing to a 12,000 person crowd at Wembley it didn’t show. Let’s hope he, Keeps On. (See what we did there)...

XL Video keeps it hi-def with Will Young

UK - XL Video is supplying three of its newly purchased Christie S20 Roadster projectors as part of the complete video package being provided to the current Will Young Keep On Live UK tour.

The show features both high definition playback and IMAG video directed by Phil Woodhead, and the account is being project managed for XL by Phil Mercer.

Mercer says: "Over and above the standard IMAG requirements for a tour of this scale, XL is providing state-of-the-art hi-def playback, projection and control equipment, giving maximum impact to the specific sections of the show utilising pre-recorded video."

Material is projected onto an 11m wide by 5m electric roller screen that comes in centre stage, and also onto two 16 by 19 ft side screens. The compact, very bright Christie's - part of several new additions to the XL projection fleet - are rigged on a front truss, and beam onto the centre screen, while the two side screens are fed by a pair of rear-projected Barco R12+ machines.

The six songs worth of pre-recorded content are stored on a V1 hi-def Doremi hard drive which is controlled via a Barco Events Manager system. These sections of the show are all cued via timecode and synched to the click track.

The camera package consists of three of XL's Sony D50s. Two are in the pit - one with a wide angle lens stage left, and the other with a standard lens that also goes hand-held onstage at specific points. The third is positioned at FOH with a long throw lens. There's also a remote overhead mini DV cam strapped to the truss, and another one on the keyboards.

All these are fed into Woodhead's GV Kayak mixer/switcher unit. He also has a digital Magic DVE at his disposal for effects. The camera mix goes exclusively onto the two side screens, leaving the centre screen for playback footage at the appropriate moments. "It's very much a classic rock 'n' roll mix with a few little twists and nuances," says Woodhead.

XL's crew of 6 are Mark Hughes, Matt Vassallo, Hugo Levien, Sacha Moore, Andy Warwick and Phil Woodhead. Richard Turner was also involved extensively in programming the Events Manager during pre-production.

There are just 6 tracks of playback in the show, and used sparingly and thoughtfully, it has maximum impact. All these tracks were made by Blink TV, produced by Tom Colbourne and directed by Marcus Viner who worked closely with the live show's artistic director Michael Gracey, and Will Young himself.

There are three primary video concepts: A 1960's style pastiche of American household TV commercials for the track Happiness - with all products called 'Happiness'; a big airport themed section and a 1970's gameshow section. Due to the heavily stylisation of these pieces, Blink brought Alan Macdonald (fresh from production designing Stephen Frear's acclaimed movie The Queen) onboard as art director to oversee the set design and styling.

The 70's gameshow section involved an extensive hi-def shoot at Island Studios, reconstructing a cheesey American gameshow set and lighting rig. Will Young gives a hilarious performance as the gameshow host, complete with some fabulous 70's styling, gloriously dodgy outfits and wigs and 15 extras as 'contestants'. This shoot yielded footage for 3 tracks, edited by Colbourne.

A green-screen shoot at Island Studios produced the Happiness montage period style TV commercials for household products, starring a suitably 1960's looking actress as the 'Happiness Woman' for all ads. A series of original 1960's household interiors were then digitally composited to make the backgrounds.

The airport section involved the creation of a panoramic full 3D animated airport exterior view, on which Blink worked with Bristol based graphics house, Hello Charlie. This sequence opens the show in stunning style, complete with a full troupe of dancers dressed as flight attendants and Will dressed in a pilot's uniform and shades.

The tour is produced by 19 Touring, the concert division of 19 Entertainment, and production managed by Kenny Underwood for Cheeky Rascal Ltd. It runs until mid October.

Thanks also for this TT. It's all made to appear so easy, that we often forget the enormous amount of work involved.

Fantastic review from the Mid Sussex Times. Thanks to Debbie T.

Written by Phil Dennett from the Middy -

"Will Young returned to the Brighton Centre in triumph on Friday evening.

It had been two years since his last date in the city, and it would be tempting to say it was like he had never been away.

The truth is that Young is a different performer now - more confident and relaxed and a greatly improved artist because of that.

So relaxed was Young that it was the third number, a well-crafted version of Jose Feliciano's Light My Fire, before Young felt the need to say "Hello everybody".

When he quipped to a young woman "Are you having a baby? Will you call it William if you do?" he might have started something in a few weeks down the local register office. He was probably unaware that there were at least two heavily pregnant young ladies in the crowd (nothing to do with Young of course).

Young's vulnerable-sounding high-register voice - with it's hint of a tremble - is not everyone's cup of tea but it adds a poignancy and vocal beauty to songs like Very Kind and All Time Love.

When he revealed that Think You'd Better Leave Right Now was his favourite song the emotion he poured into it proved the point.

Young's a real natural charmer and camp with it, so the near-capacity crowd lapped up the camp-fest opener Keep On with its airline uniforms and funky dancing. A cry of "You're well fit" greeted this number.

Think It Over was more of a barn-stormer, aided and abetted by a band that was never less than brilliant from first note to last.

Brighton crowds are not renowned for getting lit up so early, so it was eight songs in before the Stephen Stills (remember supergroup Crosby Stills Nash and Young?) number Love The One You're With ignited the place.

Young squeezed into limb-hugging riding gear for some numbers, joking he was given a riding crop at Newcastle but not saying what use he had made of it.

It was obvious from the time the album Friday's Child hit the shelves that Young was a big talent, and this 20-song set oozed class from first to last. Young surely seems set to have a long career."

Just love the last paragraph. :yahoo:

Great review...thanks for posting that..

I could have done with a slightly less side-on view that night, as my photographic skills were a bit better than at Wembley, when they just went to pieces.

Thanks for the pix Toni they're great - and TT for the review. :yahoo:

You're welcome. :)

I've uploaded some clips onto youtube. Here are the links:

The first one is really tiny, 8 seconds of drumming from Jerry, that's all.

2nd one -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Nxd1vkdt4

It's the end of the medley. The bit where they repeat “Monday’s got a beautiful baby… but Friday’s Child, Friday’s Childâ€.

A third –

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KltThU8ygmw

This one is the beginning (first minute or so) of Leave Right Now. I couldn't focus on Will at first as there were too many heads in the way.

The last one -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7wshMcVPvY

This one is Will introducing his "boyband". I couldn't help shouting out for Brendan , and having watched it just now, I think Will actually waves at me, after he hears my screams! :o
