September 21, 200618 yr Brilliant review for Sheffield in the Star :yahoo: Running on Will power! HE started the show as an air steward and finished as an unlikely bridegroom. In between he was a sexy showjumper, a toy soldier, a cheesy gameshow host, a preppy version of 1950s perfection, and a casino croupier. Throughout his two-hour concert at Sheffield's Arena last night, Will Young was pure class. The evening was a spectacle - a piece of theatre as much as a pop concert. Simple but eye-popping choreography, both from Will and his talented troupe of dancers, fought for space in front of stunning backdrop screens showing surreal, fast-moving projections - an airport, a quiz show, an all-American housewife - which set the scene for each part of the show. Linking each section together the screens and curtains drew back, to reveal a rear-stage set up like an intimate jazz-club. Will was funny and sweet. He got muddled up with which song was coming next, lost his mic-stand, and had to call for a towel after getting sweat in his eye. The show was not only visually stunning but note-perfect and moving, too. Will's smooth vocals and distinctive sound made favourite tracks Leave Right Now, Light My Fire, Love The One You're With, All Time Love and Your Game all the more spine-tingling live. The £30 tickets would have been cheap at twice the price. Will's dancing and song-delivery, teamed with slick, spectacular production, combined to create the sort of show only American superstars rival. His 2002 Pop Idol beginnings seem like a very distant memory indeed. These days Will Young performs like a megastar Edited September 21, 200618 yr by BanYellowm+m's

September 21, 200618 yr Review in Leeds Today on Sheffield gig - posted by Willsdoc In his strides Gig Review Will Young Sheffield Arena IF you lose track of time during one of Will Young's latest performances you can always guess how far into the evening you are by the tightness of his trousers. Because throughout the show his legwear becomes increasingly, disturbingly, more skintight as the concert progresses. By the end of the night his slacks seem positively fused with his body, almost creating a whole new intrinsic organ. If this sounds a little camp then you'd be right. Will kicks off the show with Keep On, dressed as a airline pilot surrounded by trolley dollies. Perhaps some looser legwear for the next song? No, jodhpurs. Maybe something a little less Village People for the one after that ? Nope, next up he appears singing All Time Love as a big strapping soldier. In tight trousers. Then, just when the teeny-boppers and housewives weren't quite whipped up into a big wolf-whistling frenzy, he strips down to a skimpy red vest. Is this Blue Oyster Bar: The Musical? There's a serious point to all this because our Will appears to have slipped screaming between several stools. Despite some impressive choreography he doesn't have the fluid moves of Timberlake, nor does he boast the slap-round-the-face sexuality of Madonna or the kitsch cool of Kylie. He doesn't even master the pop court jester persona of Robbie Williams. What he does have – and I challenge anyone to contradict this – is a breathtakingly good voice, better than any of the above. He also possesses a gentle charisma endearing enough to seduce an entire arena. He's at his zenith when showing off his vocal gymnastics, not when Will is staring us in the face through his clingy trousers. Young has gone to some effort to offer us a real 'show', but, curiously, didn't produce anything nearly as impressive as that seen on his last arena tour. Sure there were backing dancers and a brilliant on-stage band, but the set wasn't as stunning and overall there seemed to be an incongruous mixture of themes – most of them camp, I can cringingly confirm. It wasn't enough to negate the fact that Will is truly gifted and now boasts a back-catalogue familiar and extensive enough to keep his army of fans elated. But if he continues to try, and blatantly fall short, of producing a sophisticated stage show it could, tragically, start to detract from his true talents. ROD McPHEE 21 September 2006 Just his opinion of course and some agree some disagree - I'm in the latter not the former but the bit I've highlighted says it all and everything else he's said pales into insignificance - for me.
September 21, 200618 yr You can tell it's written by a man can't you munchkin. It's just his opinion but as he says none can argue with that breath-taking voice & that's good enough a comment for me.
September 21, 200618 yr Author Thanks munchkin, why do these male reviewers see camp as offensive? and why do they expect him to be like Timberlake, Madonna and Kylie and Robbie for Gods sake? Will is Will Young. :yahoo: Totally agree with this part though. What he does have – and I challenge anyone to contradict this – is a breathtakingly good voice, better than any of the above. He's at his zenith when showing off his vocal gymnastics, Well he isn't Timberlake, Williams, Madonna or Kylie. Get it straight critics - he's not even trying to be the second Timberlake or Williams - he's the first Will Young. :yahoo: On the whole, I would have said the reviews had been good (some better than others of course) although some critics who always need to find fault, will do so just for the hell of it. They have such little ammunition with which to find fault, that they've gone for the cheap jibes. Some have insulted the audiences (this one does with his teeny-boppers and housewives jibe), some about the apparent lack of a sophisticated set, the tightness of his trousers, being too camp etc. But on one thing they are all in agreement and can't find fault with, and that's - the voice. All the criticism in the world is just pie-in-the-sky when put against that one admitted fact.
September 22, 200618 yr Sounds like another stonking performance in Glasgow. There's one or two reports drifting in on Devoted. Voice on top form as always & he was very flirty with someone in the audience. Someone presented him with a riding crop tied with a blue ribbon & he said he would use it later. ;) Also someone thought the jodphurs had shrunk or he was wearing someone else's.
