Review of SECC gig - Living Scotsman - thanks to *Jue* on Devoted:

SECC, GLASGOW

FOLLOWING his accomplished turn as a vaudeville entertainer in the Stephen Frears film Mrs Henderson Presents, Will Young has elected to fully embrace an all-singing, all-dancing presentation on his current Keep On Live tour.

On previous outings, he was keener to establish his credentials as a serious musician fronting a slick outfit. But, for the first few minutes of Thursday night's gig, his band were not even visible, stowed behind a luxurious red curtain while Young took his place at the centre of a chorus line of dancers.

For the next two hours, he walked an uncomfortable tightrope between muso performer and pop variety act. He was still a little awkward in his banter with the audience but was more willing to exploit camp in the various set pieces, including fronting his own dressage team of dancers in full riding gear and a finger-snapping parody of a 60s light entertainment dance routine.

However, it was a tension which was never fully resolved. The venue was particularly stuffy, which might partially excuse some of the lethargy of the performance.

But, despite the musical boost provided by swelling ballad You And I, the classy funk cabaret of Your Game and his covers of Stephen Stills' Love The One You're With and Shawn Lee's suitably euphoric summery soul gem Happiness, in the end, it was all far too restrained and polite - just like our host.

Restrained and polite and lethargic

I'll try. Seen two already & it's still very much a blur.

Off to Newcastle in about an hour to meet up with some devotees for a meal & a few drinks before the show. :yahoo:

Just going to have a last pee, then I'll be off. Can't believe that in about 3 hours time I'll be seeing him again after 2 years. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Hope everyone gets there safely - there's a wretched sea fret come up - but I hope it doesn't extend all the way down to Newcastle.

Will rocked Glasgow!!!!! :yahoo: :yahoo:

Can't really say anything other than that he was FABULOUS!!!!! B) The dancers were fabulous, the band were fabulous, the sound and lighting were fabulous ......... I loved it to bits.

My pics were pretty c**p, but it's the first time I've managed to take a pic of Will that you can actually tell it's him! Here's one - let me know if you'd like to see the rest .....

Still on Cloud 9 .....

Just got back, after a rather hairy drive through thick fog. (Incidentally Suggy - a sea fret is a sea mist, and we get them quite frequently in this part of the world).

Well I can't do justice at the moment, but it was the most fabulous gig I've been too. I mean brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :yahoo: :yahoo: The crowd loved him. I can't get my head round it at the moment, but the one thing that sticks in my mind was the long I of You & I - thought it was going to go on forever.

Only grouse was why is it there are so many giants at Will's gigs. I'm not that tall, but they always seem to be in front of me. I've taken some pics, but whether they'll be any good I'll find out tomorrow. At the moment my head if reeling - in a great way.  Bed calls me..............

Cheers for the report back chrysalis, it's so kind of you to post and I know how difficult it is when you're feeling so rahh!! :dancing:

Welcome back to Lainey and your pics look great Kara, looking forward to seeing more tomorrow.

First of all welcome back Lainey, and thanks for the pics Kara - they're great, which is more than be said for my c**p ones. They're awful, so I shan't be posting. Anyway................

I arrived at about 7 and wandered around among the milling crowds not seeing anyone I knew. :( So I went over to the merchandice stall - and there were 2 pens left on a thing on the wall so I sneaked between peeps at the counter and managed to get them. :cheer: By this time it was about 7.20 so decided to find where I was sitting and went to where I thought it was - only to find I was the other side of the arena. No sooner had I sat down than Shelley Poole came on and sang a few numbers - quite good, then I went to the loo - tried finding some peeps - came back and Anna Krantz was about to start - thought she was great. :cheer:

Then came the interval. Finally found a couple of peeps up in the tiers, after protracted texting as to where they were - that was wonderful. :cheer: Went to try and find TT, but couldn't. Then finally went back to my seat, when all of a sudden someone said "chrysalis" and it was TT. It was so lovely to put a face to the name, and we had a quick chat. By this time it was almost 8.45pm, and we were all waiting................

As soon as the throbbing music started on KO everyone got up including me as I wouldn't have even been able to see the screen let alone the stage, (why are there so many giants at Will's gigs) and never sat down until the end. Couldn't believe the opening - boing and the dancer had been lifted into the air and we were off - brilliant opening. :cheer: From then on it's all a bit of a blur - things keep coming back. So if I don't get them in order please excuse me.

I loved the gospel ending to LTOYW, and the long I on You & I I couldn't believe he held it so long as he walked down the thrust. The little boy next to me loved LMF (as did I) - sung straight - and he was jigging around standing on the seat - the little boy that is  . ATL with the dancers was glorious, and I loved the backscreen montage when he did the retro section. His dancing and moves are quite incredible. Loved the acoustic part with Joseph et al harmonising. And loved the way the audience sang along - you could hear the sound echoing back, so it must have been incredible on stage.

There were a lot of people allowed at the barrier, so what with that and the giants in front of me it was difficult to see him on the floor, so I had to look at the screens.

The band and dancers were brilliant. It was lovely to see Thomas again (can't remember he was on the last tour) and Beverley - I think she's great.

Oh - everything was brilliant. There were the bits about the knickers, the sweat was pouring off him - even from where I was I could see that, and he often used the black towel. Something about one of the dancers hair being real  (as if) it was the brassy blonde wig in the retro part. What amazed me was how he could go from striding down the thrust in all his glory (so to speak) in a minute then turn into the bumbling Will trying to find his water bottle the next. Just couldn't believe this was the same Will I saw 4 years ago at Exeter - indeed couldn't believe it was the same Will I saw only two years ago. :o

I left the arena in such a whirl my ears were still ringing with the sheer blast of sound. It was a fantastic show. :yahoo: :yahoo: Fortunately as I was near an exit I was among the first to get out, but even then there were hundreds going down the steps, and walking up to the top road. When I got to the front of the Arena I saw they had closed the doors to the front with people behind, and must have been allowing people out in sections. I finally found my fella, with the help of my mobile, and he proceeded to do a U turn right on the roundabout, then there was the hairy journey home in thick fog. Don't think I stopped talking the whole way I was on such a high.

Well if you've read as far as this  you'll know I had a brilliant evening, brilliant show, brilliant Will. :yahoo: :yahoo:

Oh I forgot near the end Will went over to the band, and he was laughing with them it was such an infectious laugh made me laugh out loud. :yahoo:

Great review Chrysalis i really enjoyed reading that  It got me so in the mood for tomorrow :yahoo:

Thanks Chrysalis - it sounded like the place was rocking. This is a report back from rosj on Devoted:

Love the bit about the knickers and banner saying I love Willy "I do too - amen sister" - what's he like

Just home and he was absolutely bloody marvellous - again!

Great audience, up for it from the word go, very noisy.

First he said he'd had an easy day, then remembered he'd been to the gym and started saying that him in the gym was not a pretty sight - something about his knock-knees as he was running!

He had the place in kinks with what he said early on about how he should come down into the audience so he could hear what people were shouting out - much excitement at that then he said he'd been there when Take That did and Mark Owen got his hair pulled really hard (with actions), then he said "it was you was it?" to someone who shouted out in the audience then was still telling the band more about it as the music for the next song was starting.!

Also when he picked the pants up from the stage and walked them gingerly to the back of the stage to put them away and said how ladies pants always made him giggly and how he doesn't see them often and the audience roared with laughter!!

He loved the "I love Willy" banner that he spotted at the back and wanted them to pick it up on the screens but decided they couldn't and said "I do too, amen sister"

Also was telling us how hot it was in there and how his ear moulds were squelching around in his ears.

That's without commenting on any of the music! But it was just glorious, I stood in awe and loved every single minute...

They were all smiling so widely when the show ended, I think they enjoyed the reaction too!!

It's going to be just awful when this tour ends I think..

I agree about when the tour ends though
