Every track there is a tune. Sa Sa Samoa is one of the most astonishing/unlikely songs to ever smash BJSC's top 5 along with Hate or Glory!

 

I still think Sa Sa Samoa smashing was just the logical next step after Unicorn Kid and Carli (though it was much better than both of those).

010 Mdiče // SOPHIE – BIPP

BJSC: 56 FINAL PEAK: 05th POINTS AWARDED: 12pts

 

What do you get when you follow up T2's 'Heartbroken' with a minimalist bass-laden slice of garage? Only one of the most risky, yet rewarding songs sent to BJSC this year. If anyone is the master of risks when it comes to BJSC, it is Mdiče, who conquered BJSC 56 with a 'will-they-won't-they' entry (that was also a potential of mine) that defied the odds and stormed to a respectable 5th place, and still sounds hot as hell today. Might benefit from the bias of knowing it weeks in advance, but even then it outshines most of the BJSC output this year.

 

 

 

009 Kluminican Republic // Kris Menace ft. Miss Kittin - Hide

BJSC: 52 FINAL PEAK: DNQ POINTS AWARDED: N/A

 

An un-explainable DNQ, Kluminican Republic send their most arresting entry ever that hoovered up the votes of those in similar good taste, but barely missed out on a qualification in the contest. Featuring the legendary Miss Kittin, this slice of funky dance storms into the Top 10 to become the 2nd highest DNQ'ing entry in the Top 100 countdown.

 

 

 

008 Hendinia // Cyril Hahn feat. Shy Girls - Perfect Form

BJSC: 56 FINAL PEAK: 08th POINTS AWARDED: 12pts

 

With yet another Aeroche potential, Hendinia show how to bring the surprising sense of taste with this gorgeous original Cyril Hahn cut. Famous for the 'Say My Name' remix which featured on nearly every blog known to man, Cyril collaborated with the lesser known Shy Girls to create his stunning début, which despite being a soft and steady track still burrows itself into your subconscious and becomes instantly insatiable.

 

 

 

007 Skall // Postiljonen - Supreme

BJSC: 54 FINAL PEAK: 01st POINTS AWARDED: 10pts

 

The final Aeroche potential of the entire contest comes from across-the-board winner and feel good track of the year 'Supreme', which combined the catchiest synth line with gorgeous, airy vocals to create a beautiful piece of synthpop that switches your mood at the flick of a switch. This is only the 2nd highest Skall entry of the year, which is a testament to the quality this country has produced this year.

 

 

 

006 Hendinia // Taped Rai - Epilogue I & II: Shadow Of The Sun

BJSC: 54 FINAL PEAK: 02nd POINTS AWARDED: 7pts

 

And the final Hendinia track comes from the wonderful Taped Rai, who progressed from an average David Guetta collaboration to one of the most surprising and mysterious début singles of the year - starting as a heart-wrenching piano piece, it storms into an electronic wonderland in the last minute to make sure that if it hadn't hooked you by that point, at the end you'd be rushing to the repeat button - and has only continued to grow immensely since!

005 N DNTN // Gesaffelstein - Hate Or Glory

BJSC: 60 FINAL PEAK: 02nd POINTS AWARDED: 12pts

 

In what could be described as one of the most risky BJSC entries of the year, Gesaffelstein's evil breakout track 'Hate Or Glory' was hyped up from the moment confirmations opened. Sneakily creeping up the odds and defying all initial expectations to become a frontrunner, it stormed into 2nd place to become the best-performing N DNTN entry and one of the Top 10 biggest entries of the year, which shows a drastic shift in BJSC tastes. Appealing to literally every voting demographic, this pulsing and breathy track coupled with some of the best visuals of the decade to date made it an absolutely irresistible combination. It's obvious I show a lot of love for it as literally weeks after the contest it participated in had come to a close, it's already stormed into the Top 5 of the entire year. KUDOS CHRIS.

OH WOW, didn't expect Shadow Of The Sun! Would never have been thought Hendinia would end up with 2 entries in the Aeroche top 10, faaaabulous <3

004 Skall // Air France - It Feels Good To Be Around You

BJSC: 52 FINAL PEAK: 10th POINTS AWARDED: 12

 

Harve proving that when you throw your weight behind a risky favourite it can go so well! This Balearic beauty was hyped from the offset, eventually being tipped as a favourite to win the entire contest, but unfortunately only made to to a still very respectable 10th place. Giving tropical vibes throughout, this track is an instant mood-lifter and never fails to radiate good vibes whenever it's played. Easily Harve's best to date, which is a tough call considering the consistent quality Skall brings to BJSC each month. Petition for an Air France reunion NOW.

003 Slutland // Julianna Barwick - Pyrrhic

BJSC: 56 FINAL PEAK: DNQ POINTS AWARDED: N/A

 

When Pavel goes good he goes STUPIDLY good. Mixing classic choral harmonies with touches of glitching electronic and waving orchestral elements, the 2nd entry by Julianna Barwick in the Top 100 (following 'Sa Sa Samoa') this absolute stunner FAILED TO QUALIFY (how?!) under Elëdan's one-off alter ego in BJSC 56 making it the highest peaking DNQ in this countdown, very much undeservedly. Reminiscent of the work of Eric Whitacre and absolutely RACKED with emotion, it builds to give you instant goosebumps - I fail to see how anyone can't be charmed by this. If this is what Slutland bring then BRING BACK SLUTLAND.

002 Fljótavík // Ludovico Einaudi - Experience (Starkey Edit)

BJSC: 59 FINAL PEAK: 05th POINTS AWARDED: 12pts

 

And the final song before we find out the #01 BJSC entry for Aeroche in 2013 is this emotionally charged orchestral wonder given a wonderful dubstep spin (some words that should make you CRINGE, but it gives it so much more energy and raw builds to tug at the heart strings). Quoted as being the favourite Aerochian discovery since their initial participation in BJSC in the 43rd edition, this track gathered a mass of fans to parallel the result of Zechonia's similar entry 'Crystallise' by Lindsay Stirling. Being an absolute sucker for strings and piano work, the many builds, breakdowns and intervals leading to that twinkling end chorus just gets me EVERY SINGLE TIME, and got me through quite a lot of stressful times by making me even more emotional. Gr8. Amazing work however, and a very, very worthy runner-up to what surely must be a masterpiece going by all of this gushing!

001 Mdiče // FKA twigs - How's That

Actual perfection.

 

Considering the sheer level of similar taste that both me and Ben seem to share, it was pretty obvious he was going to be one of the big contenders to top this countdown, and here we are! His 10th entry in this chart (meaning ALL 10 of his entries this year are included... afaik) is that of recently BBC Sound Of... long-listed FKA twigs with her first single from her 2nd EP release named 'EP2'. Towering above every entry both in its contest and all those surrounding, this was always on track for this position due to its erratically beautiful production, STUNNING video and haunting vocals reminiscent of a vulnerable Sade / Janet hybrid.
