December 18, 201311 yr Author I really shouldn't like 'Earthquake' but it is fabulous! <3 And yay for Iggy, even if it's the poorest of her three tracks. *four (poor forgotten 'Beat Down' :( [technically not her song I know but she's the only vocalist in it]) And imo 'Work' is a lot better than 'Bounce'/'Change Your Life', they are a bit too basic bitch for my loving.

The chart is not purely based on last fm playcount, which is why some songs with lower 'sales' are higher in the chart. ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ We start off with Justin Timberlake, a man who had a big comeback in 2013 and scored his biggest selling song to date with 'Mirrors'. Clocking at 8 minutes, it is the longest song in my year-end chart, but the length of the song doesn't put me off as I love the two contrasting sections, the first part which was made for radio followed by a more RnB styled 2nd half makes for a good listen. Chase & Status also came back this year with their 3rd album, from which 'Lost & Not Found' is taken from. The song shows off the vocals of the unknown Louis M^ttrs and mixes them with their breakbeat style. It was a very refreshing comeback from them which became their 3rd top 2 hit in my chart. It definitely does a better job than the follow up 'Count On Me' which did slightly better chart wise in the UK. At #53 is Droideka 'Get Hyper', which blew up this year thanks to a viral video. It was originally put on YouTube in July 2011 on an underground bass music promotion channel which allows people to download their songs for free and use them in their YouTube videos without having to worry about copyright issues, but after seeing it get popular they put the song on iTunes and it made the top 40 officially. It definitely has the 'unprofessional bedroom producer' sound but it's a fun song with lots of bass so of course I was gonna love it. Next up is a track which miraculously scraped the top 40, 'Turn Me Out' from British DJ Russ Chimes. It's an uplifting house tune with a woman giving the sex factor with the repeated lyrics "turn me on/turn me out/make me scream/make me shout". And what's even better is the intro, which gradually builds in tempo until the beat and sample kicks in. You'll only find that on the full version of the song though (stupid radio edits!) And just missing the top 50 is Klangkarussell. Their instrumental 'Sonnentanz' was a big club hit in 2012, but for general release they added British vocalist Will Heard who sounds like Sam Smith but without the falsetto, which made it a lot better in my opinion. It's a laid-back summery dance tune which is deserving of a top 50 place, but only 50 songs could make it. ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ Recap: 051. Klangkarussell feat. Will Heard "Sonnentanz" 052. It's a nice song which did quite well in the charts. And the singer has a distinctive voice which helps. Up next is Lana Del Rey who gets the dance treatment from Cedric Gervais, it's clearly a formula that worked as it went to #1 on my chart, however there are 17 #1s that did even better in my year-end chart, oops. The song is mostly worth listening to for her voice, but why would I listen to a downtempo when there are the dancetastic sounds of Cedric on this version? A great duo, although follow-up 'Young & Beautiful (Remix)' didn't get me so much, as it was basically the same as this remix. Choose a different remixer next time Lana! Drake is at #48 with his highest entry in my chart. The song features absolutely no rapping which is an unexpected move for the Canadian but it paid off well obviously as people loved it including myself. As you know I love an RnB song when it's done well and this is certainly done well. Ellie Goulding with her first of 2 entries enters at #47. The song is a pop anthem and stayed at UK #1 for 3 weeks. Not much else to say about this except it's a great song and I expect more good tunes from her next year. Finishing the section is The Aston Shuffle with the floptastic 'Sunrise (Won't Get Lost)'. Although it kinda shaked off that tag when it finished 6th in the rejects final. It's a proper tune, the man's vocals are great but it wouldn't be this good without the Tommy Trash co-production which turns it into a progressive house banger. Only one more section to go before the top 40 guys! ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ Recap: 046. The Aston Shuffle vs. Tommy Trash "Sunrise (Won't Get Lost)" 047. Ellie Goulding "Burn" 048. Drake feat. Firstly we go to Kat Krazy, an upcoming British producer whose track 'Siren' got signed to Armind records and even got the Armin van Buuren remix treatment. However the original version is much better, and is the one that charts today. It's a song that I could see being a UK hit if he was actually a big name in the EDM scene, elkka's vocals are beautiful too. Next up is a song that really should've been a massive success, but it just wasn't to be. German producer Zedd with British singer Foxes teamed up for this really good song that $mashed into my personal top 5. I also love the Tiësto remix of this which gives the song a big room drop as opposed to the more commercial one found in the original. Calvin Harris up next with his collab with Ayah Marar. But don't worry Calvin you will be appearing in my top 40, twice! This song managed to make the top 10 in the UK and broke the record for most top 10s from a single studio album. Although people were quick to point out that he cheated a bit by releasing loads of songs before dropping the album, and hiring different vocalists for each song. Despite that it's still a cool achievement and I'm very happy for his continued success. Almost at the top 40 mark and Breach is the next to go. The song in question is one that got a lot of hate for being overly repetitive and the sexual lyrics, but I loved the simplicity of this. And on another note YAY for Breach not being a one trick pony and having a fab follow-up in 'Everything You Never Had', which also hit top 10 for me but isn't quite as good as 'Jack'. And falling at the last hurdle is Disclosure with 'Latch'. The song is actually from 2012 but it missed my YE Top 100 so it is eligible for this year's countdown. Plus the fact that it had massive longevity, a lot of its chart weeks coming from 2013. It wasn't the first song I heard of theirs but it was the first one that I took proper notice of and loved. Their music has an element of style to it and it's clear that this song doesn't just appeal to the EDM community but has massive cross-appeal. Indie, urban and pop fans were all loving Disclosure this year! They still have one more song yet to come so I'm sure they aren't too annoyed at missing top 40 (if they're even reading this lol) ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ Recap: 041. Disclosure feat. And what better way to start it off with one of the biggest songs of the year. Frequent listeners of TEH CHERT SHO will know all about how Naughty Boy won Deal Or No Deal which kickstarted his career, Jameela would mention this every week. When I first heard this song I was a little disappointed, but it just kept on growing and eventually I loved this song. Sam Smith's vocals are the main selling point in this for me, the production is quite good too, but I didn't like 'Lifted' very much, which had more or less the same beat but with Emeli Sandé. As obvious as it was that Sam would win the Sound of 2014 award, it is very much deserved as with the right songs, his voice really shines. Hopefully he makes a song as good as this next year if he is to live up to the hype. ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

It may seem like an attempt to re-create 'Feel the Love', with its repetitive vocals, saxophone usage and drum n' bass rhythm - but it stands out on its own somehow, despite not being as good as the former. I guess if it's not broke, it don't need fixing. The soulful vocals of Ella get me here with her plea to her lover, you can feel the emotion behind it despite there not being much lyrics, but hey, repetition can work well. This, accompanied with the fast beats of Rudimental and the return of the sax make for a good song worth listening to. ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

Following up a song as good as 'Language' (which went to #3 in last year's chart) would be hard for anybody - but Porter, with help from Mr. Zo, does it very well. You can clearly hear the Mat and Porter sounds that they are known for in this song, and together they create a really good tune. The hook in this song 'loving you is easy' is very relatable because it's very difficult for a smile to not appear on your face when this song is on. Unfortunately it just missed my top 10 on not one but 2 occasions but it easily makes my top 40 despite that. Sadly we haven't heard from Porter since this song but I hope he's currently in the process of making another big tune for my ears to appreciate. ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

It's nice for a change to have someone who doesn't talk about money, bitches and cars in their song, instead going for lyrics about how he made it as an artist. It's not as good as 'Thrift Shop', but it's certainly a great follow-up and I hope that the duo can get some more hits. The production also gets praise from me, I love it when producers add piano to their songs, although as a piano player myself, I'm obviously biased as to what my fave instrument is. ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

The song is not to be taken seriously at all, the lyrics aren't that great. I just love it for what it is though. And it brought Britney into chart relevance for 2 months. Yay! "everybody in the club, all eyes on arse, all eyes on arse". I definitely wouldn't be looking elsewhere if I saw Britney in a club! ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

'Timber' is alright but I can't see it doing as well as 'Crazy Kids' on my chart At least it made the cut :P Me neither, when the highest Tinie can get as a lead artist on my YE chart is #99, you can tell that he's not as good as he used to be. We still have one more of his songs to go, but he's a featured artist on said song. There will be other artists in the top 10 too :lol:Â Thanks Rob!
December 19, 201311 yr Oops a lot to catch up on. A few i liked at the time but have since got bored of slightly. Major major love for 'Adorn' (indeed SO refreshing), 'Crazy Kids' (i see you crediting will.i.am.not <_<), 'Hold On...' and 'Work' though. Shocking that only one of them was a big hit officially.

It was nice to see this be such a hit as it's good to have variety in the charts, and when an indie song is done very well, it will get love from me - sadly this isn't the case most of the time which is why my chart is dominated by EDM. Also worth checking out is the Kat Krazy remix of this, which is responsible for almost a third of its total last.fm playcount. It was the song that got me into Kat and made me check out his other songs (which lead me to the brilliant 'Siren' that I reviewed earlier) ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

It's not so much shocking that those songs (except Drake) weren't big hits, more disappointing but expected - although 'Work' and 'Crazy Kids' did outperform my expectations and at one point I wasn't sure if 'Adorn' would even get pushed. You can always trust will.i.am to make a song better though :( (however I am saying that without having ever listened to the non-will.i.am version oops)

It may not have lots of bass and an epic drop, but one of the good things about EDM is the wide variety of sub-genres, and this song doesn't need those elements to win my love. It would work as an instrumental, but the vocals make it even better. I've probably said it before but I love it when dance music has good vocalists to it. I also love the intro and how the song builds up gradually, the vocal doesn't actually start until we're almost 2 minutes into the song! Which is why I obviously prefer the full version to the radio edit. ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊

Female vocalist? tick. Cool dance beat? tick. Congratulations guys you matched the criteria for making a perfect dance-pop song! :cheer:  It's fun to listen to and it manages to get the balance right between dance elements and pop elements, a lot of dance-pop songs get this wrong by making it too basic for my liking - but this has all the ingredients for a chart hit right? Oh. Also worth listening to is the Hardwell remix which gives the drop more of an edge, perfect for listening to when I'm in a proper dancey mood. ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊
