Almost at the top 30 stage of the chart, we get to the first song to go to #1 of 2013 (will.i.am was my actual first #1, but he had 1 week in 2012 as well), which also made the UK top 20 officially. This is the song where Lethal B manages to make Judi Dench seem cool (I didn't know he had a thing for old women :P) but more importantly that drop *.*

 

If we could measure the bass of all the drops in my top 100, this would probably come out on top with the most. The rapping and singing is alright and doesn't add much to the song, it's all about the moment it drops for me. Really good energy vibes coming off this.

And just missing the top 30 is a song that some of you may have thought would be higher, but as it hasn't been in the chart for very long #31 is a more appropriate position for this. The song basically gives us more of the country-dance sound that we loved from 'Wake Me Up' (still to come).

 

Once again Avicii picks a good vocalist, and unlike Guetta/Harris he doesn't go for whoever is popular but for who suits the song best. The lyrics are quite simple and easy to learn, and the rhythm in the verses definitely gives off those country vibes. Then Avicii gives us what he's known for with his melodic instrumental break, just so much positive vibes coming off this song - and it's currently leading the race for Thermo's Christmas chart (spoilers!)

• ‘LaLaLa’ was one of the enduring tracks of the summer. :heart:

And now for another Calvin Harris song. Generic, it may be - but it ticks the right boxes for me, Calvin's production is very good on this and Tinie is a welcome addition who surprisingly works on this dance record despite his urban roots. It's not bringing anything new to the table but who said all songs had to be revolutionary and original?

 

I am personally looking forward to the next Harris album if he keeps up the amazing quality of these singles, 18 Months was my personal favourite album of 2012. And before you start crying, no this is not the last you'll hear of Calvin in my chart! :D

Next up is upcoming US producer Le Youth with his remix of Cassie's 'Me & U', which in my opinion, is a lot better than the original (and don't get me wrong I loved the original). Continuing the chart is former (RIP Paul :() Dutch electro-house duo Bingo Players with their tune 'Rattle'. I originally loved it back in 2012 but its UK release gave it the push to #2 in my chart. It's a fun instrumental which drops not in the way you'd expect it to (well, these days a 'Rattle' esque drop is more common thanks to the massive success of the song).

 

The name 'Rattle' is quite appropriate given the sound they use in the melody, which has a sharp flavour to it (if you know what I mean, I'm terrible at describing instrumentals :lol:). Speaking of instrumentals, incase you didn't notice the version in the chart today is the original (the Far East Movement version can go die)

Last year's #1 drops out of the running for 2 YE #1s in a row, with 'Gentleman' coming in at #27. With it being the long-awaited follow-up to 'Gangnam Style', it was going to debut nowhere else but #1 for me. It's obviously an inferior version of his breakthrough hit but it's still great, giving us a fun song and video. He hasn't released anything since unfortunately.

 

As you may have guessed this is the only foreign-language song in my end of year review this year, I don't care that I can't understand what he's saying, because the lyrics are not important when we have the beat and Psy's novelty value. And it was a top 10 hit in the UK despite people predicting him to be a one-hit wonder. Yay!

At #26 is Steve Aoki, who had his first #1 with this song and kept the spot for 4 weeks! As you can see from the chart run it took me a few weeks to properly love it but when it hit me it hit me hard. That drop is just irresistible imo (sadly many of you didn't think so too as it flopped in BJSC ;()

 

If Steve continues making tunes as good as this then he is more than welcome to throw cake in my face at one of his gigs :lol: That's if I ever get the chance to see him live.

And starting off the final quarter of the chart is one of the UK's million sellers of 2013, a beautiful song about losing your loved one. Passenger's unique voice and the lyrics make the song what it is, and even though it has no hints of EDM I still love it. Its overexposure and long stay in the charts have made the song lose some of its 'magic' however.

And now for a more #serious song after that Icona Pop entry, we have Sebastian from Swedish House Mafia teaming up with regular SHM vocalist John Martin plus Australian Tommy Trash. More or less it was the closest thing we got to a new Mafia tune in 2013 (oh how I miss them, please come back!)

 

The song is a proper anthem even without Martin's vocals (it made #24 as an instrumental) but he improves it in my opinion. When he sings 'take my hand and reload' whilst the beat drops it is a *.* moment, I love it when all the parts of the song come together and it's no surprise that this was a massive club hit this year.

We had been waiting ages for Lady GaGa to start the ARTPOP campaign, and when we were finally given a release date and teaser I was excited. But fortunately she declared a POP MUSIC EMERGENCY and released it early :dance: It gave us the GaGa style that we all know and love, and in the Roar vs Applause 'battle' I was definitely backing 'Applause'. This is pop music at its finest.

 

Unfortunately the rest of the era disappointed me, with single #2 'Do What U Want' failing to reach my top 10, but at least we have 'Applause' to prove us that she can still make a fantastic pop tune.

Starting the top 20 is a song which was brought to my attention by the many viral videos uploaded to th'internet. (my favourite of which is linked in the artwork [it's the army one, for those who can't be arsed to click on it]). The song is just a simple trap beat with the occasional female shouter and growling but it's very good. Unfortunately I was the only one on the forum who actually loved this - everyone else thought it was some novelty record but I'm pretty sure Baauer didn't make this with the intention of it going viral.

Newcomers DVBBS & Borgeous made their debut with hard hitting beats, appropriate considering the name of the song. Whilst the UK public were loving the boring 'Stay', I was into this, a sexy urban jam which flopped as a single, largely thanks to the video coming out about 6 months late. The song is about Rihanna's love for money and going to the strip club, and let's be honest, who wouldn't love those things if they were as sexy and rich as her? It's not the highest song with a hip-hop beat though, Macklemore will be coming up soon.

And this amazing afrobeat song manages to enter at #16. He may as well be talking in a foreign language because I don't get a word of what he's saying, but his voice does add a fun edge to the song - it's not the type of song that would work with a typical British or American rapper (proof of this is that I much prefer the original to Wyclef Jean's remix, which is in the video version of the song) The follow-up 'Azonto' is a weak version of this but his new single 'Million Pound Girl' shows us that he's not a one-trick pony.
